Chapter 80 - Chapter 79

The sun hung at its absolute zenith, a blistering sphere of gold suspended in a cloudless, azure sky. The air was thick and heavy, carrying the sharp, stinging scent of brine and raw ocean salt that coated the lungs with every breath. Below, the vast expanse of the sea was a restless, churning canvas of deep indigo, completely contradicting the calm sky above it. The waves were massive, swelling and crashing with a rhythmic, thunderous violence against the reinforced wooden pylons of the docks.

This was the Land of Waves. Or, more accurately, its bustling, newly constructed eastern port.

Since the fall of the tyrant Gatō, the Wave Village had undergone an economic explosion. The Great Naruto Bridge had connected them to the mainland, bringing merchants, resources, and life back to the impoverished nation. The docks had expanded tenfold since Naruto's first C-rank mission here, now capable of hosting massive merchant galleons and high-speed motorized vessels.

Standing at the edge of the premier docking bay, utterly unfazed by the roaring sea spray, were two figures.

This particular iteration of Naruto Uzumaki—a highly durable shadow clone tasked with a continent-spanning reconnaissance mission—stood with his arms crossed over his chest. He had completely shed the bright, conspicuous colors of his youth. The iconic orange jacket had been carefully rolled and sealed away into a storage scroll secured in his hip pouch. In its place, he wore a sleek, black tactical muscle shirt that hugged his torso, putting the lean, battle-hardened musculature of his arms on full display. His legs were clad in dark, flexible shinobi trousers, heavily taped at the ankles and tucked seamlessly into crisp, white shinobi sandals. A standard kunai pouch rested firmly against his right thigh.

Beside him stood Karin Uzumaki, a girl who had finally stepped out of the oppressive shadows of Orochimaru's laboratories. She had completely discarded the tattered rags of the Sound Village, adopting a wardrobe that screamed both tactical efficiency and newfound clan pride. She wore form-fitting black shinobi pants, mirroring Naruto's, but proudly bearing the vibrant red spiral crest of the Uzumaki clan stitched directly onto the right thigh. Her upper half was clad in a crisp, white, high-necked tank top that provided excellent breathability while shielding her collar from the harsh sun. Black, metal-plated tactical gloves covered her hands, and white shinobi sandals completed the ensemble. With her vibrant, crimson hair blowing fiercely in the ocean wind, she looked every bit the fierce kunoichi she was born to be.

Before them stood a familiar face. Tazuna, the master bridge builder, leaned heavily against a wooden crate. He looked older, his gray beard a bit longer, but his eyes carried the proud, unyielding spark of a man who had saved his country. He held a half-empty bottle of sake in one hand, gesturing wildly with the other toward the sleek, heavily modified motorboat bobbing violently in the water.

"So, brat," Tazuna grunted, taking a swig of his drink. "Are you absolutely sure you still want to do this? The road to Uzushiogakure isn't a pleasure cruise. The Land of Whirlpools earned its name for a reason. The waters surrounding that ruined island are cursed. Nobody can enter those straits easily, let alone in a motorized dinghy."

Naruto flashed a confident, trademark grin, adjusting the tactical gloves on his hands. "Don't worry about it, old man. I know exactly what I'm doing. You just make sure this boat can handle the kinetic force of a whirlpool."

Tazuna slammed his bottle down on the crate, his pride instantly wounded. "Who the hell do you think you're talking to?! I'm a master builder, you brat! My bridges connect nations, and my boats are first-class! The hull is reinforced with steel plating and chakra-conductive resin. It'll hold together... assuming you don't drive it straight into a water spout!"

"That's all I needed to hear!" Naruto laughed, leaping effortlessly off the wooden pier and landing perfectly balanced on the deck of the swaying vessel.

Karin followed immediately after, her landing completely silent. Naruto moved to the stern, gripping the pull-cord of the heavy outboard motor. With a sharp, violent yank, the engine roared to life, violently churning the water behind them.

"Thanks for the ride, Tazuna!" Naruto yelled over the roar of the engine. "We'll bring her back in one piece!"

"Just don't die, you idiot!" Tazuna yelled back, waving his bottle as the boat shot forward, tearing through the waves and leaving the Land of Waves behind in a white, foaming wake.

The journey from the Wave Village to the forgotten ruins of Uzushiogakure was estimated to take nearly a full day by motorized transport.

For the first few hours, the ride was remarkably smooth. The open ocean was vast and isolating. It gave the two Uzumaki time to process the chaotic events of the past few weeks. Following their departure from Orochimaru's hidden base, Naruto's clone and Karin had spent the better part of a week traveling cross-country, hunting down high-value black market bounties to secure the funds necessary to finance this specific leg of their expedition. It had been grueling, bloody work, but it had forged an undeniable tactical synergy between the two sensors.

Now, with the sea stretching endlessly before them, Karin used the downtime to refine her chakra control.

She sat cross-legged in the center of the rocking boat, her eyes closed in absolute concentration. Resting on the wooden deck in front of her was a large, spherical glass jar filled to the brim with coarse, multi-colored sand—red, blue, green, and yellow grains all hopelessly mixed together.

It was a maddening, high-level chakra control exercise that Naruto had witnessed Tsunade force upon her medical apprentices.

The objective was not just to move the sand, but to individually isolate and separate the grains by color, using purely microscopic threads of chakra. Different colors of sand had been dyed using different mineral compounds, meaning they all possessed minutely different weights and physical densities. To separate them, the user had to perfectly calibrate their chakra output to resonate with the specific density of a single color, levitate it, and move it without disturbing the others.

Karin was terrifyingly good at it.

As a natural-born sensory prodigy of the Uzumaki clan, her ability to compartmentalize and micro-manage her chakra network was second to none. She had already mastered the basic levels of the exercise during their trek through the Fire Nation.

Inside the glass jar, the sand was moving as if possessed by a phantom wind. A layer of pure blue sand levitated seamlessly, forming a perfect diagonal slope against the glass. Then, with a twitch of her fingers, the red sand separated, forming a horizontal plane that bisected the blue. Now, her brow was drenched in sweat as she attempted the most difficult phase: forcing the green and yellow grains to weave through the established layers in a dual, intersecting spiral pattern.

Naruto, keeping one hand on the steering tiller, watched her out of the corner of his eye. She's a genius, he thought, thoroughly impressed. Her raw control is already approaching Shizune's level. If she actually decides to pick up medical ninjutsu, she'll be unstoppable.

After several more hours of riding, the sky began to take on a strange, unnatural hue. The bright, cheerful blue of the afternoon slowly morphed into a heavy, oppressive grey. The ambient air temperature plummeted, and the relatively calm ocean swells mutated into violent, chaotic surges of kinetic energy.

"We're entering the perimeter," Naruto announced, his voice slicing through Karin's concentration.

Karin's eyes snapped open. The perfectly spiraled sand inside the jar immediately fell, mixing back together in a chaotic pile. She didn't complain. She quickly grabbed the jar, applied a basic sealing formula to a scroll on her waist, and stored the glass away in a puff of white smoke.

She stood up, grabbing the railing of the boat as it violently pitched over a massive swell. She looked forward and gasped.

The horizon was an absolute nightmare.

"Naruto..." she breathed, her sensory abilities flaring to life.

Naruto reached into his kunai pouch and withdrew a collapsible brass telescope. He extended it, bringing it to his right eye.

Miles in the distance, barely visible through the unnatural ocean mist, were the jagged, mountainous silhouettes of Uzushiogakure. But the island was completely blockaded. The ocean surrounding the ruined nation was entirely composed of massive, churning maelstroms. They weren't just standard ocean whirlpools; they were swirling vortexes of highly compressed water, some spanning hundreds of feet across, spinning with enough centrifugal force to snap a battleship in half.

"They're spammed all over the ocean," Karin yelled over the sudden, deafening roar of the churning sea. She snatched the telescope from Naruto's hand, pressing it to her own eye. Her crimson hair whipped violently in the wind. "No... this isn't natural weather! The chakra in the water here is completely chaotic. It's an ancient defensive array!"

She lowered the telescope, looking at Naruto with wide eyes. "There's no way a boat can make it through that! The hull will be crushed by the pressure! And we can't even abandon ship and use the Water Surface Walking Practice! The kinetic energy of the whirlpools is constantly shredding the surface tension of the water. If we step on that, our chakra will be ripped away, and we'll drown!"

"Well," Naruto yelled back, a fierce, reckless grin spreading across his face beneath his black mask. "This is where we use a little improvisation!"

Naruto slammed the motor into its highest gear, sending the boat hurtling directly toward the treacherous array of maelstroms. He let go of the tiller entirely, leaving the boat to barrel forward on a suicide trajectory.

"Are you insane?!" Karin shrieked, gripping the railing for dear life.

Naruto ignored her panic, his hands rapidly blurring through a complex sequence of hand seals. Tiger. Ox. Monkey. Rabbit. Ram.

He slammed his palms flat against the wooden deck of the boat.

"Suiton: Suijinheki!" (Water Style: Water Wall)

Normally used as a defensive barrier, Naruto forcefully inverted the shape transformation of the jutsu. Using his massive chakra reserves, he seized control of the ocean directly beneath their hull. A massive, artificial tidal wave erupted from the sea, lifting their small motorboat fifty feet into the air.

"Hold on!" Naruto roared.

Riding the crest of his own artificially generated tsunami, the boat surged forward at breakneck speed, literally surfing completely over the top of the smaller, outer-ring whirlpools. The sound was deafening—the roaring of Naruto's wave clashing against the ancient, spinning vortexes below them.

Karin screamed, entirely airborne, as the boat practically flew over the deadly waters.

They bypassed the first line of defense in seconds. But as Naruto's artificial wave began to lose momentum and crash back down into the sea, a secondary, far more terrifying obstacle revealed itself.

Directly in their path, blocking the only navigable straight to the island's rocky shore, was a colossal maelstrom. It was easily three hundred feet wide, a gaping, swirling black maw in the center of the ocean that looked like it led straight to the underworld. The sheer suction force of the vortex began dragging the boat aggressively toward its center.

"This is getting out of hand!" Karin yelled, her voice bordering on absolute panic as the boat began to spin wildly. "The boat won't make it! These whirlpools are going to rip it in half!"

"I'm onto something! Just brace yourself!" Naruto commanded.

He planted his feet firmly on the deck, anchoring himself with chakra despite the violent tilting of the vessel. He inhaled deeply, his chest expanding as he drew in a massive volume of oxygen. He molded the potent, razor-sharp nature of his wind chakra, compressing it tightly within his lungs.

"Fūton: Daitoppa!" (Wind Style: Great Breakthrough)

Naruto exhaled.

A localized hurricane erupted from his mouth. A massive, compressed sphere of gale-force wind shot forward like a cannonball, violently slamming directly into the leading edge of the giant maelstrom.

The physics of the ocean shattered. The sheer kinetic force of the Wind Style jutsu collided with the centrifugal rotation of the whirlpool. The resulting explosion of air and water created a deafening BOOM, sending a massive shockwave across the sea. The blast momentarily disrupted the circular current of the maelstrom, violently parting the water and creating a chaotic, shallow trench of foaming white surf right through the center of the vortex.

"Now!" Naruto yelled, grabbing the tiller.

The motor screamed in protest as Naruto aimed the boat directly into the violently collapsing trench of water. They shot through the gap like a bullet, walls of spinning water towering on either side of them, threatening to collapse and crush them into paste.

With seconds to spare, the boat rocketed out of the far side of the maelstrom just as the vortex violently snapped back together behind them.

CRUNCH.

After a few more hours of brutal, relentless navigation through the chaotic inner straits, the reinforced hull of the motorboat finally slammed violently into the jagged, rocky shores of Uzushiogakure.

The silence that followed was deafening.

The roaring of the sea faded into a dull, echoing crash against the rocks. The sky above the ruined island was eerily still, choked with a thick, perpetual fog that clung to the towering, skeletal remains of ancient stone skyscrapers in the distance.

On the shore, both shinobi collapsed onto the rocky beach, panting heavily.

They had survived, but they were not in good shape. They were completely, entirely soaked to the bone. Seawater dripped from their hair, their clothes plastered uncomfortably tight against their skin.

Karin sat up on the rocks, coughing up a small amount of seawater. She reached up, grabbing her soaking wet crimson hair and violently wringing it out like a towel.

"I cannot believe... that actually worked," Karin panted, her chest heaving beneath her soaked white tank top.

Naruto stood up slowly, groaning as his muscles protested the immense expenditure of chakra. His black tactical muscle shirt was practically painted onto his torso, dripping heavily. He grabbed the hem of his shirt, twisting it aggressively to wring out the saltwater, water pooling at his white sandals.

As Naruto turned back toward his companion.

Karin, deciding that wringing her hair out wasn't enough, had casually reached down and pulled her soaking wet white tank top over her head. She stood there in her black tactical sports bra, the cool ocean wind biting against her pale skin. Without a single ounce of shame, she aggressively twisted the white fabric of her shirt, squeezing a waterfall of seawater out of it onto the rocks.

Noticing Naruto's suddenly paralyzed, wide-eyed stare, Karin paused. A devilish, highly flirtatious smirk spread across her face. She gave him a slow, incredibly cheeky smile, entirely aware of the effect she was having on the battle-hardened clone.

"See something you like,Naruto-kun?" Karin teased, her voice dripping with playful arrogance as she casually slipped the damp white tank top back over her head, adjusting it perfectly.

Naruto violently cleared his throat, his face flushing faintly behind his black mask. He immediately averted his eyes, looking directly at the ruined boat to save his dignity. "I... uh... I was just looking at the transport!"

Karin giggled, standing up and brushing the wet sand off her tactical trousers. She followed his gaze toward the vessel that had brought them here.

The motorboat was a complete loss. The violent impact with the rocky shore, combined with the immense pressure of the whirlpools, had utterly destroyed it. The outboard motor was cracked down the middle and smoking. The sail mast was snapped clean in half, and the reinforced hull looked like it had been chewed on by a sea monster.

"Well," Karin sighed, resting her hands on her hips. "So much for Tazuna's first-class craftsmanship. There goes our ride back home."

"Eh, don't worry about it," Naruto said, instantly recovering his composure as he walked past her, adjusting his kunai pouch.

Karin raised an eyebrow. "Don't worry about it? We're stranded on a haunted, ruined island surrounded by impassable maelstroms."

Naruto stopped at the edge of the tree line, looking back at her with a confident, triumphant smirk visible in his eyes.

"I already left a Raisan formula mark securely hidden back on the Wave Village docks," Naruto explained, tapping the side of his head knowingly. "When we're done here, we don't need a boat. We can instantly teleport back and forth. The hard part was just getting our physical bodies past the barrier."

Karin blinked, processing the sheer, overpowered utility of the Flying Thunder God technique. A slow smile spread across her face.

"Show-off," she muttered.

Naruto chuckled, turning his gaze toward the towering, fog-shrouded ruins of their ancestors. "Come on. Let's go see what's left of our clan."
