Naomi Kenway carried her son through nearly the entire market. She had little knowledge of the going prices, so she had to learn and compare to make the best choice.
"Sir, are these a dollar a pound?"
A familiar voice drifted over. Naomi Kenway looked toward the sound and saw Margaret Jennings and her daughter at a vegetable stall.
Carina Sanders noticed them and waved her arm, shouting, "Aunt Kenway! Ian! We're over here!"
Margaret Jennings turned and greeted them as well.
Naomi Kenway walked over. "Buying tomatoes?"
"Yes." Margaret Jennings looked at the tomatoes, a troubled expression on her face. She didn't have much money left, but she wasn't good at haggling. In her daily life, she was always treated with respect and simply couldn't bring herself to lose face.
Naomi Kenway saw her predicament and picked up a tomato. "Ma'am, could you give us a little discount?"
"This is the price everywhere. We're already the cheapest in the area. I really can't go any lower, miss."
