Cherreads

Chapter 208 - Chapter 204: After the Whistle

The win didn't taste like celebration.

It tasted like survival.

XH felt it the moment the doors closed behind them and the noise of the arena got replaced by the quieter noise of administration. Footsteps on tile. Paper shuffling. Radios crackling. The sound of people who were never cheering because they didn't want anyone to feel like they earned anything.

They were herded into a room that looked like a classroom pretending to be a court.

Same fluorescent lights. Same dull walls. Different pressure.

A long table sat at the front. Three staff members. One security officer in the corner. A clipboard. A stack of papers. A camera that was either real or "not functional," depending on what story they wanted later.

XH sat with JP, NS, and TZ in a line, shoulders squared, sweat still drying on their skin. Their bodies were still in game mode, still buzzing, but their minds were forced into a different kind of defense now.

The supervisor spoke like he was congratulating them.

"Game 3 concluded without major disruption," he said, voice smooth.

JP's jaw twitched.

Without major disruption.

Like the institution wasn't the disruption.

The supervisor continued. "Due to heightened public attention, we will confirm behavior compliance and review athlete conduct. This is routine."

Routine.

The same word they used when they tightened ropes.

XH forced his face neutral. He kept his hands open on his knees. He didn't let his eyes linger too long on any staff face. He didn't give them a reaction they could harvest.

The supervisor slid a paper forward.

"Sign."

XH looked down.

The clause was short. Clean.

I acknowledge that any behavior interpreted as disruptive may result in immediate placement adjustment.

Interpreted.

That word made it a trap. It meant their opinion was the weapon.

XH signed anyway.

He hated the feeling of his pen tip scratching paper like a surrender.

VT signed next at a different table across the room, surrounded by his own staff people, posture relaxed, face calm. He didn't look injured. He didn't look humbled. He looked like he had already decided he would win the war even if he lost a game.

XH didn't look at him for long.

He could feel VT's gaze like a hand on the back of his neck.

After the signatures, they were dismissed with fake politeness.

No pep talk. No acknowledgment of HS leaving. No mention of the red board waiting outside.

Just dismissal.

Outside the review room, the corridor was jammed with students who had been waiting like fans outside a concert. Some shouted congratulations. Some tried to slap shoulders. Some wanted selfies. Some wanted gossip. Some wanted to stare at XH like he was a story they could consume.

XH's body tensed automatically.

JP stepped in front like a shield, shoving students back with his forearm while laughing too loudly, performing chaos so people wouldn't see how protective he was being.

"Back up," JP shouted, grin wide. "He's fragile."

TZ muttered, "He's not fragile."

JP shot him a look. "He's fragile to lawsuits."

NS didn't speak much. He scanned faces. He watched angles. He stayed close enough to XH to be seen as support, but not so close that it looked like dependence.

That detail mattered in a place where everything became rumor.

When they finally broke free and stepped outside, the rain hit them.

Not heavy yet.

Just light drops, like the sky was testing the mood.

XH looked up instinctively. No forecast. No warning.

The damp air clung to his skin.

JP groaned. "Even the sky is dramatic."

TZ laughed once, exhausted. "It's on theme."

NS's eyes flicked to XH. "You okay."

XH nodded. "I'm fine."

It was a lie, but it was the only lie he could afford.

Because if he admitted he wasn't fine, the world would start asking questions. And questions were dangerous now.

They walked toward the dorm compound and saw the girls waiting.

Kitty was first to move when she saw XH.

She didn't run. She couldn't. Staff and cameras were everywhere.

But her whole body leaned toward him anyway.

Her eyes were still wet from crying. Her cheeks were flushed. Her hands trembled in small bursts like her adrenaline hadn't decided to leave her body yet.

June stood beside her, posture controlled, expression composed, but her eyes were sharper than earlier. They looked like they had been carved by something new.

NC stood slightly behind them, steady.

Cherry stood with arms crossed, scanning the crowd with a predator's patience.

Anna hovered close to NC, still fragile.

Jihye was quiet at the edge, gaze distant, as if she was watching a timeline unfold.

Kitty stopped in front of XH and spoke fast, voice soft but urgent.

"You're bleeding."

XH reached up to his lip without thinking. The rain had washed some blood away, but it still tasted like iron.

"I'm fine," he repeated.

Kitty's eyes narrowed. "No."

June's voice came low and controlled. "They reviewed you again."

XH nodded once.

June's jaw tightened. "And."

XH kept his voice quiet. "More signatures."

Cherry muttered, "This place loves paper."

JP snorted. "Paper and fear."

Kitty exhaled hard, trying to calm herself. "We won. That matters."

June's eyes stayed on XH. "It matters. But they'll punish anyway."

The way June said it sounded like she already understood the institution's rhythm.

Win.

Then pay.

Kitty glanced at June, then back to XH, then swallowed.

Her voice softened. "Your three. The last one."

XH's chest tightened.

He hadn't looked up when he shot, but he had heard her.

He had heard her loudness turn into fuel.

He didn't say it out loud.

He couldn't.

Not here.

So he just nodded.

Kitty's mouth trembled into a smile that didn't fully arrive.

June watched that nod and felt something tighten behind her ribs.

It was small.

But real.

The campus walked with them now.

Students trailed behind, whispering, laughing, replaying Kitty's shout in their mouths like candy.

"That's my XH."

"My XH."

People repeated it because it was dramatic.

Because it was romantic.

Because it was messy.

Kitty heard it and flushed, then lifted her chin like she refused to take it back.

June heard it and went still.

NC noticed June's stillness and stayed close, not touching, just present.

Cherry smirked faintly, not cruel, just entertained by the fact that Kitty had done what June couldn't.

Anna whispered to NC, "Is she allowed to say that."

NC whispered back, "She already did."

The rain increased slightly as they reached the dorm walkway.

Not a storm yet, but enough to dampen hair, enough to make the air smell like wet concrete and tension.

A staff member shouted at a group of students to stop gathering.

The crowd dispersed slowly, like they didn't want the moment to end.

Because moments like this were rare in the junta school.

Joy felt illegal.

The boys went to the dorm entrance. The girls stopped at theirs.

It should have been a simple separation.

But the air between them was thick.

Kitty stepped closer, careful, keeping distance but close enough to be heard.

"Don't go out alone tonight," Kitty said.

XH's jaw clenched. Last night flashed in his mind.

Masks. Fists. Rain.

He nodded. "I won't."

June's voice came quiet but sharp. "If you feel like you're going to snap, come find us."

XH blinked.

The way June said it wasn't romantic.

It was command wrapped in care.

Kitty's eyes flicked to June.

June kept her gaze on XH.

XH nodded again. "Okay."

JP cleared his throat loudly to break the tension.

"Alright," JP announced. "If we're doing emotional support lines, I'll go. XH, don't die. Kitty, stop yelling like a stadium dad. June, stop glaring like you're in court."

Cherry laughed once, sharp. "I like him."

June's mouth twitched slightly.

Kitty rolled her eyes, but her cheeks were still flushed.

NS stayed quiet.

Then NS spoke, calm, aimed at everyone but landing differently.

"We won one," NS said. "We still need three more."

JP muttered, "And we need our lives back."

NS continued, voice even. "No more solo hero moves. No more late night disappearances. We stay visible."

XH felt the word visible land in his chest.

Visible meant protected.

Visible also meant watched.

Kitty nodded quickly. "Yes."

June nodded too, slower, eyes still sharp.

The group separated into dorms.

XH showered quickly, water stinging bruises. He stood under the stream longer than necessary, trying to wash away the feeling of being hunted.

When he changed and stepped back into the room, JP was pacing.

TZ lay back staring at the ceiling.

NS sat at his desk again, calm, writing something.

XH didn't ask.

Sometimes not asking was survival.

JP stopped pacing and looked at XH.

"You did good," JP said, voice rough.

XH nodded once.

JP swallowed. "HS would've screamed if he saw that last three."

The room went quiet.

TZ's jaw tightened.

NS didn't turn around, but his shoulders shifted slightly.

XH's chest tightened like someone squeezed his lungs.

He didn't respond.

Because if he responded, he might break.

In the girls' dorm, Kitty sat on her bed with her knees pulled up, still buzzing. She replayed the last three in her head, over and over, like a prayer.

June sat at her desk, notebook open, but she wasn't studying. Her eyes stared at nothing.

NC sat across from her, calm, watching.

Cherry leaned against the wall, scrolling, smirking at every post that repeated Kitty's shout.

Anna sat quietly, still fragile.

Jihye sat cross-legged on the floor, fingers tapping her knee like she was counting heartbeats.

Kitty spoke first, voice soft. "I didn't mean to say it like that."

Cherry looked up, amused. "You meant it."

Kitty flushed. "I meant… I meant support."

Cherry smirked. "Support with possessive grammar."

Kitty's cheeks burned.

June's voice cut in, calm but edged. "You didn't have to shout."

Kitty turned, eyes wide. "I wanted him to hear me."

June's jaw tightened. "He heard."

Kitty swallowed. "Good."

The room went quiet.

NC exhaled slowly, like she was watching a storm build inside a cup.

June's voice stayed controlled. "You're making it easy for people to talk."

Kitty's eyes flashed. "People already talk."

June's gaze sharpened. "Not like this."

Kitty leaned forward slightly, voice trembling but firm. "I'm not doing it to hurt you."

June froze.

That line made it personal.

Cherry watched, eyes bright, enjoying the drama, then caught NC's look and stopped smirking.

NC spoke gently. "Both of you are tired."

June didn't answer.

Kitty's hands trembled. "He was bleeding. He was getting fouled. I couldn't sit there like nothing."

June's voice dropped lower. "So you claim him."

Kitty's eyes widened. "I didn't claim him."

June's gaze didn't move. "You said my."

Kitty swallowed hard.

She didn't deny it.

Because denial would be a lie.

June exhaled slowly, trying to swallow jealousy like poison.

NC watched her, knowing June was too proud to admit the burn.

Jihye whispered, almost to herself, "The loudest love always becomes a target."

Kitty looked at Jihye. "What."

Jihye didn't explain.

She rarely explained.

In the boys' dorm, JP suddenly had a bright idea that was also a terrible idea.

He pulled a small bottle out of his bag.

TZ sat up immediately. "No."

JP grinned. "Yes."

XH stared. "Where did you get that."

JP shrugged. "Don't ask questions you don't want answers to."

NS turned slightly, eyes sharpening. "No alcohol."

JP rolled his eyes. "It's not a party. It's a ritual. One sip for HS. One sip for luck. One sip to remind ourselves we're still human."

TZ's jaw tightened. "That's how people get caught."

JP's grin softened. "We don't get caught."

XH hesitated.

Part of him wanted to refuse.

Another part of him wanted anything that could loosen the knot in his chest.

NS watched XH's hesitation and spoke calm.

"Not here," NS said. "Not in the dorm."

JP sighed dramatically. "Fine. Outside. Quiet."

TZ stared. "You want to drink outside with security patrols."

JP shrugged. "We'll be smart."

XH's mouth twitched faintly. Smart was not JP's brand.

But the idea of a small stolen breath outside the cage tempted him.

Not because he wanted alcohol.

Because he wanted a moment that wasn't monitored.

JP messaged someone.

Within minutes, a whisper moved through the dorms the way whispers always did in a place where phones got locked at eight.

A small gathering, not a party, just a few friends, in a corner near the dorm compound where the cameras didn't reach well, where students sometimes stood to breathe and pretend the world was normal.

When XH stepped outside with JP, TZ, and NS, the air was damp and cold.

The rain had paused again.

Not stopped completely.

Just waiting.

Students were scattered in small clusters, talking low.

Some faces from other majors hovered too, curious, hungry for drama.

HTN was there with Thoon and SRM in the distance, dressed like they didn't belong in this place, watching as if the night was a show.

Cherry and NC walked out with the girls too, Kitty and June following, both pretending they were just getting air.

Kitty's eyes found XH immediately.

June's eyes found Kitty's eyes finding XH.

NS noticed everything.

JP acted like he noticed nothing, which was his talent.

Someone passed JP a paper cup.

Someone else produced a second bottle, smaller.

JP's grin widened. "See. Community."

TZ muttered, "Idiots."

JP poured tiny sips, not enough to smell from far, not enough to look like a party, just enough to feel like rebellion.

He handed one cup to TZ.

TZ stared, then took it, because refusing would make it a bigger thing than accepting.

JP handed one to NS.

NS hesitated, then took it and didn't drink yet.

JP handed one to XH.

XH held it, fingers tight.

The cup felt warm against his cold hand.

JP handed one to Kitty, then another to June, because JP liked chaos and balance at the same time.

Kitty blinked, surprised. "Me."

JP nodded solemnly. "You're part of the war."

June stared at the cup like it was an insult. Then she took it anyway, because pride would not let her be the only one refusing.

The group stood under dim compound lights, cups in hand, pretending this was nothing.

But it wasn't nothing.

It was the first time since HS left that their bodies weren't fully obedient.

JP lifted his cup slightly. "For HS."

No one spoke.

They drank.

Tiny.

Barely.

But enough.

Kitty coughed quietly. "That's strong."

JP grinned. "Life is strong."

June's eyes narrowed. "You're already annoying."

JP bowed slightly. "Thank you."

Laughter flickered in the group, small and fragile, like a candle fighting wind.

XH felt the knot in his chest loosen slightly.

Not gone.

Just less tight.

Kitty looked at him, eyes still bright, voice soft. "We won."

XH nodded. "We did."

June watched them, jealousy burning quietly behind her eyes.

She didn't interrupt.

Not yet.

Because the night was just beginning.

And the institution loved punishing people right after they felt hope.

Somewhere in the distance, security footsteps echoed.

A staff radio crackled.

The red board waited.

And in this small stolen circle of warmth, the first step toward the tipsy kiss arc had already been taken, not with lips, but with attention.

Kitty's loud love.

June's quiet jealousy.

XH's exhausted heart.

And a cup that tasted like rebellion.
