Chapter 209 - Chapter 205: Borrowed Warmth Tonight

The cup was small.

The consequences were not.

XH could feel it even before anyone moved, before anyone laughed, before anyone tried to pretend it was nothing. The air itself felt like it was recording. Every dim light on the compound wall looked like it might hide a camera. Every passing shadow felt like it might be a staff member deciding whether to turn a moment into a punishment.

And yet, everyone stood there anyway, cups in hand, shoulders close, breathing like this was the only oxygen they'd been allowed in days.

JP tried to make it look casual. Of course he did. He leaned back against the low railing, cup tilted, grin too wide, voice a little too loud for a place that punished volume.

"Tiny sip," he announced again, like repeating it would turn it into a legal defense. "We're basically drinking medicine."

TZ stared at him with the expression of someone watching a child try to argue with gravity.

NS didn't drink yet. He held his cup still, eyes scanning the compound, calm and measured, like he was watching angles in a court rather than sharing a drink with friends.

Kitty had coughed after her sip, cheeks warm, eyes bright. June had taken her sip like it was a dare and then refused to show a reaction, because June never gave the world proof of weakness unless she meant it.

Cherry stood slightly behind NC and Anna, arms crossed, enjoying the tension like it was entertainment, until she noticed how real it was and her expression hardened.

Jihye didn't sip much at all. She held her cup like a prop and watched the darkness beyond the lights, as if she expected the night to grow teeth.

XH took his sip slowly.

The burn traveled down his throat and settled in his chest like a small flame.

Not enough to make him drunk.

Enough to loosen something that had been clenched for too long.

He hated how good that tiny loosened feeling felt.

Because it reminded him he had been carrying too much inside his ribs, inside his jaw, inside his silence.

Kitty's eyes stayed on him. Not in a dramatic way. More like she couldn't help checking if he was still intact after everything. After the fouls. After the review room. After last night's fight. After HS leaving.

XH looked away first, not because he didn't want her attention, but because attention was a spotlight and spotlights attracted knives.

June noticed that look away.

She noticed everything now.

And the more she noticed, the more she felt like she was standing outside a window watching someone else live the scene she had wanted.

JP cleared his throat and lifted his cup again, turning solemn on purpose because he liked ritual.

"For HS," he said.

No one laughed this time.

The name hung in the air like cold breath.

TZ's jaw tightened.

Kitty's eyes filled again, fast. She blinked hard, refusing to cry in front of everyone this time, but the wetness stayed.

June's gaze dropped to her cup. Her fingers tightened around it, knuckles pale.

NS finally drank his sip. He didn't flinch. He just swallowed like swallowing was a task.

XH drank too.

The burn felt sharper this time because HS's name made the flame in XH's chest turn into a wound.

JP spoke quickly after, voice rougher than he wanted.

"We're still here," JP said. "That has to mean something."

Cherry muttered, almost kindly, "It means you're stubborn."

JP pointed at her like she'd complimented him. "Exactly."

A small laugh flickered through the group, fragile and brief.

It wasn't joy. It was survival pretending to be joy.

Students from other majors hovered at a distance, drawn by the cluster of bodies. Not close enough to be part of it, close enough to watch. Close enough to take the scene and carry it back to the dorms like a story.

HTN, Thoon, and SRM were there too, not hidden, not shy, sitting near a low wall like they were judges at a show.

SRM's gaze was sharp, amused.

Thoon's smile was smug in that pretty way that made people underestimate how cruel she could be.

HTN watched like she was making bets.

Kitty noticed them and lifted her chin slightly.

June noticed them too and stiffened.

Cherry noticed them and looked like she wanted to walk over and say something that would get everyone cut.

NC's hand lightly touched Cherry's elbow, a silent warning.

No more fire tonight.

Not here.

Not under staff patrols.

Someone else, a random student from computing, drifted a little closer.

"Congrats," he said, voice casual but eyes hungry. "Game 3 was wild."

JP smiled without warmth. "Thanks."

The student's gaze flicked to XH. "Captain's a legend now."

The word legend made XH's stomach tighten.

Legend was just another label.

Label meant target.

The student's gaze flicked to Kitty, then June.

Then he smirked slightly. "Your cheerleader was louder than the commentators."

Kitty's cheeks flushed again.

June's jaw tightened.

Kitty spoke before June could.

"He needed to hear it," Kitty said simply.

The student laughed. "He definitely heard it."

His eyes flicked to June as if expecting a reaction.

June didn't give him one.

She stared at him like he was a stain on the floor.

The student cleared his throat and stepped back, suddenly less brave.

JP watched him go and muttered, "People love drama until drama bites them."

NS's voice came calm, low. "Drama is useful."

XH glanced at NS.

NS's gaze stayed on the darkness beyond the compound lights, expression unreadable.

XH felt that unease again.

Useful.

For what.

JP began talking louder again, trying to keep the mood from collapsing. He told a story about how the cafeteria curry was basically a human rights violation. TZ made a small deadpan comment that somehow made Kitty laugh for real, just once, a quick bright sound that surprised even her.

XH heard that laugh and felt warmth rise in his chest.

Then June heard it too.

And felt the warmth as a bruise.

Kitty's laughter always sounded effortless.

June's laughter always felt measured.

It wasn't because June wasn't happy. It was because June had been trained to control what she gave the world. Even her joy.

Kitty gave joy like it was natural.

That difference used to be nothing.

Now it felt like competition.

The drinks didn't increase in volume, but time did what alcohol always does.

It softened edges.

It made people a little braver.

It made people forget that walls had ears.

JP poured another tiny amount into his cup and took it like he was proving a point.

TZ rolled his eyes but didn't stop him.

Cherry took a second sip too and didn't cough this time. She smirked, proud of herself for surviving the burn.

Anna refused a second sip and clutched her cup of water like a lifeline.

NC stayed steady, drinking almost nothing, watching the group like a responsible older sister.

Jihye's fingers tapped her cup again, rhythm slow, like she was counting down to something.

June didn't drink more, but she didn't need to.

Jealousy was already intoxicating her.

Kitty leaned slightly toward XH, voice softer now, the way it gets when a person feels safe for half a second.

"Does it still hurt," Kitty asked, eyes dropping to his ribs.

XH's instinct was to lie.

I'm fine.

But the flame in his chest and the loosened knot made him honest.

"Yeah," he admitted quietly.

Kitty's eyes softened. "You're stubborn."

XH's mouth twitched. "So are you."

Kitty's cheeks warmed. She looked down, then back up, and for a moment her gaze stayed on his face like she was memorizing it.

June saw the gaze.

Not the words. The gaze.

That soft private gaze that didn't care about who was watching.

June's chest tightened. Her fingers curled around her cup.

She told herself, it's just support.

Then she remembered the word Kitty had shouted.

My.

June's throat went dry.

NS spoke into the small space like he was making conversation, but his timing was too perfect.

"Kitty," NS said calmly, "you should rest your voice. They'll use anything to call you disruptive."

Kitty blinked. "I'm not disruptive."

NS's tone stayed gentle. "I know. I'm saying they don't care."

Kitty's jaw tightened. "So I'm supposed to be quiet."

NS shrugged slightly. "I'm saying protect yourself."

June heard it differently.

June heard it as NS telling Kitty to step back.

Step back from XH.

June's heart did something sharp.

Kitty didn't step back though.

Kitty leaned closer to XH instead, rebellious.

"Then they can write it down," Kitty said, voice low but fierce. "I don't care."

XH felt the words land in his chest.

He wanted to tell her to be careful.

He also wanted to tell her thank you.

He didn't say either.

Because too many eyes were on them.

Thoon whispered something to SRM and laughed.

SRM's smile sharpened.

HTN watched like she was counting how many seconds Kitty stayed close.

June couldn't stand it.

Not because of the girls.

Because of herself.

Because she hated how much she wanted to be the one close to XH in this moment.

June stood up abruptly.

NC looked up. "June."

June forced her voice calm. "I need air."

Cherry rolled her eyes slightly. "We're literally outside."

June shot Cherry a look that shut her up.

Kitty glanced at June, confusion in her eyes. "You okay."

June nodded quickly. "Fine."

That word again.

Fine was always a lie here.

June walked a few steps away, toward the darker edge of the compound where the lights didn't reach as brightly. She didn't want to be dramatic. She wanted to breathe.

But breathing felt like work tonight.

NC stood up and followed her, quiet.

Kitty watched them for a second, then turned back to XH, as if trying to keep the moment from being ruined.

XH's chest felt tight.

He didn't like seeing June walk away like that.

Not because he had chosen June.

Because he knew that look in June's body.

The look of someone trying not to be seen bleeding.

Kitty spoke softly. "She's stressed."

XH nodded. "We all are."

Kitty's voice dropped. "I didn't mean to make it weird."

XH looked at her.

Her eyes were honest.

Too honest.

He swallowed. "It's already weird."

Kitty's lips parted slightly. "Is that bad."

XH hesitated.

He didn't want to lie.

He didn't want to make a promise.

He didn't want to break her by accident.

So he gave the truth he could carry.

"I don't know," XH said quietly. "But I don't want you to stop."

Kitty's eyes widened.

Her breath caught slightly.

June wasn't there to hear it.

But the night still heard it.

Because SRM, sitting near the wall, had watched the angle. Her gaze flicked toward Thoon with a smirk that said, did you see that.

Thoon's smile sharpened.

HTN leaned back, satisfied, like the campus gossip engine had just received fuel.

NS noticed the exchange too.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

He didn't speak.

But XH felt the air change.

Then it happened.

Footsteps.

Heavier.

More deliberate.

A staff patrol, two security men, radios crackling, flashlights pointed low but ready.

The group froze instantly.

JP's grin died.

TZ straightened.

Kitty's body tensed.

June, at the edge with NC, stiffened too.

Cherry's eyes flashed with anger.

Jihye's fingers stopped tapping.

The security men approached with the slow confidence of people who enjoyed catching students in "violations."

"What's this," one asked, voice bored but sharp.

JP lifted his cup slightly, casual. "Water."

The security man's flashlight swept the cups.

It lingered.

The air went cold.

"Curfew is enforced," the security man said. "Gatherings are restricted."

JP smiled too wide. "We're dispersing."

The security man stepped closer, sniffed the air slightly like a dog.

Kitty's heart hammered.

June's jaw clenched.

XH felt his ribs burn as he inhaled slowly, forcing his face neutral.

NS spoke calmly. "We were saying goodnight. We're done."

The security man's gaze flicked to NS, assessing, then to XH, lingering longer.

"Captain," the man said.

XH didn't answer immediately.

He forced his voice calm. "Yes."

The security man's eyes narrowed. "You are under conduct review."

JP's shoulders tensed.

TZ's jaw clenched.

Kitty's hands trembled.

June's eyes sharpened from the edge.

The security man continued, "Any further instability will have consequences."

XH swallowed hard. "We're leaving."

The security man held the stare a moment longer, enjoying the power.

Then he stepped back slightly.

"Go," he said.

The group moved instantly, not running, but fast enough to show obedience without panic.

Students scattered in different directions, splitting into smaller clusters to avoid being labeled a gathering again.

JP whispered sharply, "Dorm. Now."

Cherry muttered, "I hate this place."

June stayed quiet, eyes burning.

Kitty's breath came fast.

XH walked with JP and TZ toward the boys' dorm, but his eyes kept flicking toward the girls, making sure Kitty and June were safe.

In the scramble, people got separated.

Not fully.

But enough.

A corner turned.

A light flickered.

A shadow shifted.

And suddenly XH realized Kitty was walking a few steps behind, alone for a moment, because NC had pulled June forward and Cherry had grabbed Anna and Jihye, trying to keep them together.

Kitty's face looked pale now, adrenaline still surging from the security scare.

XH slowed without thinking.

Kitty slowed too.

They ended up under a dim compound light near a narrow walkway, rain droplets starting again, soft, almost polite.

Kitty's voice trembled. "That was close."

XH nodded. "Yeah."

Kitty hugged her arms around herself. "I hate that we have to act like we're criminals."

XH's jaw clenched. "We're not."

Kitty looked up at him, eyes wet again, voice small. "Then why does it feel like we are."

XH didn't have a clean answer.

Because the answer was the entire system.

He stepped closer, careful, not touching, but close enough that his body blocked some of the wind.

Rain began to increase, droplets turning into a steadier fall.

Kitty's hair darkened slightly at the ends.

She looked up at the sky, then back at XH.

Her voice came soft, almost embarrassed. "You said you don't want me to stop."

XH's chest tightened.

He remembered saying it.

He hadn't expected it to land this loudly.

He swallowed. "I meant it."

Kitty's breath hitched.

The rain grew heavier.

Not a storm yet.

But real.

Kitty's lips trembled, not from cold, from feeling too much.

XH's body moved on instinct. He took off his jacket and lifted it, holding it above Kitty's head like a small shelter.

Kitty blinked, startled, then stepped under it.

Her shoulders brushed his chest.

The warmth between them felt dangerous.

Because warmth in a cold place becomes addictive.

Kitty whispered, barely audible. "This feels like… something."

XH's throat went dry. "It is something."

Kitty's eyes searched his face. "Then say it."

XH froze.

Say it meant choose.

Choose meant break someone.

Kitty's eyes filled again. "Please."

The rain fell harder, tapping on the jacket above them, making their small shelter feel like a private world.

XH's chest hurt. Not ribs. Heart.

He wanted to say, yes.

He also saw June's face in his mind, rigid, holding jealousy like a secret wound.

He saw HS's note.

He saw VT's smile.

He saw the red board.

He saw the institution waiting for anything to punish.

XH exhaled slowly.

"I can't say it like that," he whispered.

Kitty's face fell, tiny, like a petal crushed.

XH rushed to add, voice urgent and honest. "Not because I don't feel something. Because everything is sharp right now. Because if I say the wrong thing, I ruin us."

Kitty swallowed hard.

Her voice came small. "So you want me loud. But you want me not official."

XH's throat tightened.

"That's not what I mean," XH said.

Kitty's eyes flashed with hurt. "It sounds like that."

The rain kept falling.

Wind pushed at the jacket.

XH's hand tightened around the fabric, trying to keep shelter over her head.

Kitty's voice trembled. "I was loud because I believed in you. Because I didn't want you to feel alone."

XH's eyes stung. "You didn't make me feel alone."

Kitty's breath hitched. "Then why does it feel like I'm the one standing alone now."

XH had no answer that didn't sound like an excuse.

Kitty stepped back slightly out from under the jacket. Rain hit her hair immediately, dampening her forehead.

XH instinctively tried to pull the jacket back over her, but Kitty lifted her hand gently, stopping him.

Her voice was soft, hurt, proud. "Don't."

XH's chest tightened.

Kitty looked at him, eyes wet, then forced a small smile that wasn't real.

"I'm going back," she whispered.

XH's voice broke slightly. "Kitty."

Kitty shook her head once. "Not tonight."

She turned and walked away into the rain, shoulders tight, moving fast enough to not fall apart in front of him.

XH stood there under the dim light, jacket still in his hand, rain soaking his hair now, feeling the warmth leave like a door closing.

Behind him, a shadow shifted.

NS was there at the corner of the walkway, having arrived quietly, watching just long enough to understand the shape of what had happened.

NS didn't smile.

He didn't look smug.

He looked thoughtful.

And that was worse.

Because thoughtful meant planning.

NS's voice came calm. "You shouldn't leave her like that."

XH snapped his head around. "I didn't leave her. She left."

NS's gaze stayed steady. "Because you didn't choose."

XH's jaw clenched. "Stop."

NS's voice remained even. "I'm not attacking you. I'm telling you what the girls will feel."

XH's ribs burned with each inhale.

He felt rage rising.

He swallowed it.

Because he couldn't afford another explosion.

XH turned away and started walking back to the dorm, rain heavy now, wind sharper.

Behind him, the compound lights flickered slightly.

In the distance, security footsteps echoed again.

The institution kept moving like it had all night, hunting for small joys to punish.

And somewhere in the girls' dorm, June watched Kitty enter soaked, face tight, eyes wet, and June's jealousy transformed.

Not into petty anger.

Into a vow.

If Kitty could be loud, June would learn to be louder.

If Kitty could claim space, June would claim time.

And if XH refused to choose, then the story would force him.

Rain fell harder.

No forecast.

No warning.

Only the sound of things about to break.
