As for why he looked for so long...

Well, the scale was quite impressive.

[Failure!]

[Success! Obtained standard Kunai x1!]

[Success! Obtained Explosive Tag x1!]

[Success! Obtained Ration Pill x3!]

[Failure!]

[Success! Obtained Random Stat +1 Upgrade Card!]

Maruyama Kifu used all his remaining six body-collecting attempts.

He had to admit that while the success rate for white corpses was higher, the items obtained were mostly common. Out of six attempts, he only received one Random Stat +1 Upgrade Card.

'It is better than nothing.'

Maruyama Kifu did not hesitate. He used the card immediately.

The system wheel spun through the hexagonal interface before finally locking onto the Stamina attribute. His Chakra received a small boost.

After finishing his daily attempts, he performed a simple cleaning of the morgue. He locked the door and began walking toward the Ninja Academy.

He needed to deliver those earrings to the younger sister on behalf of her sibling. This was true even if the news would not be pleasant for the girl.

He also thought about the information he obtained from the Anbu ninja's Forehead Protector. The Iwa Shinobi were restless, and the Third Ninja War could break out at any moment. He did not plan to report this to the higher-ups.

It was not that he did not care. He simply felt he lacked a proper reason to know such things. It was not a matter for a body collector to worry about.

First, he could not explain how he obtained the information. Since the Anbu delivered the body, they must have inspected it thoroughly beforehand. They found nothing. If he suddenly discovered a secret they missed, the Anbu would not be easily fooled by a simple explanation.

Second, the Anbu ninja had been in that location for a reason. He had overheard the Iwa Shinobi because he was already there on a mission.

Perhaps the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen, already sensed something. He likely sent them to investigate the situation.

'I am just a small Genin body collector. I should leave the big task of protecting Konoha to the tall trees of the village.'

He comforted himself with these thoughts as he stepped onto the familiar streets.

Konoha was truly the most prosperous village in the shinobi world. The streets were lined with shops full of various goods. The pedestrians all wore happy smiles.

War was cruel, but the efforts of the Konoha ninjas made this place feel like a pure land. The heavy feeling in the heart of Maruyama Kifu lightened slightly in this atmosphere.

He arrived at the Ninja Academy.

The academy was one of the pillars of the strength and heritage of Konoha. He had studied here for six years. Although his graduation grades were not ideal, the gatekeeper still recognized him.

"It is Kifu."

Maruyama Kifu showed a humble smile and scratched the back of his head. "Old Man Tabu, your health still seems very robust."

"Hahaha! Of course it is. What brings you here, little fellow?"

"I want to ask Fukuda-sensei a few questions," Maruyama Kifu said with a hint of embarrassment.

Fukuda was his former homeroom teacher.

"I see. You may go in. However, Fukuda-sensei might still be in class. Do not disturb him," Old Man Tabu instructed.

It was not common for students to return to the Ninja Academy to consult teachers after graduation, but it did happen.

Usually, students received a lead teacher after graduating. This teacher could be a veteran Chunin, a Special Jonin, or even a Jonin.

The lead teacher would guide three students for one year. This period was known as the adaptation phase. After it ended, students could choose to continue performing missions with the teacher or leave the team.

The talent of Maruyama Kifu was not high. To avoid holding others back, he chose to leave. With a recommendation from his lead teacher, he found a stable job. That job was his current role as a body collector.

The salary was not high, but it was enough to support himself. The work was also relatively safe, especially during times of peace.

Students who stayed with their teams could ask their lead teachers for help. For someone like him who left, the former teachers at the Ninja Academy were a good choice.

"I understand. Thank you," Kifu said. He walked into the campus that was full of youthful energy.

Old Man Tabu watched him leave and sighed. "He is a good child. They are all good children."

Maruyama Kifu followed the memories from the earrings to find the classroom where Kana was located. The room was currently empty. The students were likely attending an outdoor class.

'This is for the best. It saves me from the awkwardness of not knowing what to say,' Kifu thought to himself.

He checked the seating chart posted on the door and found the seat belonging to Kana. The desk was very clean and tidy. However, his expression became solemn when he looked at the corner of the desk.

There were several shallow marks carved there. They were faint but clear. The number of marks exactly matched the number of days the older sister had been away on her mission.

Every mark represented the longing of a younger sister. Each one was a prayer for the safe return of her sibling.

He sighed softly.

'This is what it means to be a shinobi.'

He took out the beautifully packaged gift box and placed it on the desk. He turned and walked out of the classroom.

He did not leave immediately. Instead, he leaned against the wall in the hallway.

It was a simple story, but the emotions were very real.
