Chapter 64: Shadow Beasts Attack
Under the moonlight, a bat-like figure trailed Ronin's car.
He didn't hide his presence.
He seemed confident he could take them.
As the car passed through an intersection, a figure suddenly dropped from the sky, throwing a massive cloth over the vehicle.
A young man wearing round sunglasses, beachwear, and flip-flops landed in front of the car.
The car vanished, leaving only a twisted, candy-wrapper-shaped lump on the street.
The attacker was Owl.
A Shadow Beast with the ability "Fun Fun Cloth."
He conjured a large cloth that could shrink and package anything it covered—including living things!
Owl turned to pick up the bundle. But before he could reach it, a chain shot out from the darkness toward him.
At that moment, a pale, dark-skinned young man appeared at Owl's side, stomping the chain into the ground.
He was another Shadow Beast—Leech.
As he stomped the chain, mucus appeared on his body, coating the chain and threatening to spread to the user.
But the next second, the chain vanished.
Around the corner, Kurapika re-summoned his chain, eyeing Leech with hostility.
Simultaneously, a slender figure appeared behind Owl.
A shapely leg whipped toward Owl's head with a sonic boom. It was Neon, who had also escaped the cloth along with the car.
Bam!
Owl reacted, raising his arm to block Neon's kick.
But the immense force knocked him back several steps. He saw the third person, Ronin, standing not far behind him.
His surprise attack had failed to capture anyone!
Did they realize Bat was bait and I was the main attacker?
Thinking this, Owl conjured his cloth again while retreating, ready to drop it on Ronin at any moment.
But Ronin didn't even look at him. He stared at the ground.
Ronin raised his fist. The mechanics of the Big Bang Impact fired. A violent, purely Enhancement punch smashed into the asphalt after he flickered from Owl's sight.
The solid road caved in, forming a crater.
But the person Ronin was aiming for wasn't there.
Instead, a sound wave swept down from the sky. It was the flying Shadow Beast, Bat.
Windows on the street shattered under the piercing screech.
Taking the brunt of it, Ronin gathered Nen in his throat and roared back, creating a counter-shockwave blasting toward the sky.
Four!
With his Sharingan, Ronin clearly identified four Shadow Beasts pursuing them.
That meant at most six were attacking the Troupe.
What kind of distribution is this?
Do they think the Troupe is easy? Or do they think we're soft targets, while the Troupe is hard, so they split up?
Such contradictory attitudes made the Shadow Beasts' logic confusing.
Moreover, Ronin didn't recall offending the Shadow Beasts enough to warrant a four-man pursuit.
But since they dared to come, they would stay!
Ronin scanned the sky and the underground. He left Owl and the Leech guy to Kurapika and Neon.
It was time to test their training.
"Leave the cloth guy alive. Kill the ugly one," Ronin shouted a reminder.
Bat descended slightly.
On the ground, a red-skinned freak, Worm, burrowed out of the earth nearby.
Only the pale, dark-skinned one was hard to identify, but Ronin saw the mucus he secreted.
Likely a Transmuter.
Not knowing the mucus's effect, Kurapika was cautious, dispelling his chain immediately after contact.
A smart defensive move.
After all, Kurapika could re-conjure the chain instantly.
Owl pushed up his sunglasses. His arm was numb. The girl's kick was stronger than expected.
She looks delicate, but she's an Enhancer?
"Leech, want to switch?" Owl asked the pale man.
"OK!"
Leech dripped mucus as he turned to size up Neon.
His behavior disgusted Neon.
She really didn't want to fight this gross guy, but Ronin said Kurapika was better suited to capture the cloth user.
So, she had to fight the slime man!
Neon reached into her pocket, pulling out a fountain pen in her left hand.
She scrutinized Leech, but not like a fighter. She looked like she was searching for a collectible part on his body.
Unfortunately, nothing.
Nothing about him looked worth collecting. Maybe his insides were beautiful?
Cars piled up at the intersection, their occupants trembling as they watched the standoff.
A truck horn broke the silence, restarting the confrontation.
Ronin stomped the ground, kicking up debris. He grabbed a rock, coated it in Nen, and threw it at Bat in the sky like a bullet.
Worm dived back underground.
But his target wasn't the pavement-smashing Ronin. It was Kurapika.
Enhancers were hard to approach, but a Conjurer? He could drag him underground and crush him!
