Nora's POV
I shift the Jeep into park and stare at our house through the windshield, my hands trembling against the steering wheel. The phone call with James during my drive home replayed everything that happened at the meeting. He couldn't match a face to my description of the vampire, but we both knew finding him would be simple enough at the next VC gathering. James promised to wait until after we handled Beck before hunting down whoever was trying to frame him, though I could hear the controlled fury in his voice.
"Kevin?" My whisper cuts through the evening air as I pause beside the porch. "You around?"
Silence greets me. That familiar electric sensation I usually feel when he's nearby remains absent. I adjust my purse strap and climb the porch steps, slipping through the back entrance. James's voice drifts from somewhere inside, deep in conversation with someone over the phone.
