Nora's POV
"I am." A shiver runs through me as the reality crashes down. James and I exist in completely different worlds. Love binds us together, but he remains a creature of darkness while I carry bite marks that prove it. "Time for the full story," I begin, pulling the blanket tighter. James shifts closer on the couch's edge. "Remember those whispers about Lynne borrowing power from someone?"
"Yes."
"Those whispers were truth. Shane was her source."
"Damn."
"My thoughts exactly," I reply. "But it gets worse. Kevin told me Shane claimed he was sent here to rescue my mother. Initially, we assumed it meant saving her from death, but now we believe it was about saving her soul before she bartered it to Hugo. Her maiden name was Winchester, which seemed meaningless at first. Plenty of witches carry that surname since the Winchester were among the earliest witch settlers, but if Shane was dispatched specifically to save her, it connects, doesn't it?"
"It does."
