Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: THE DESCENT

Chapter 53: THE DESCENT

The basement stairs seemed longer than before.

Each step took me deeper into the earth, deeper into darkness, deeper into the concentrated evil that Bathsheba had been building for two centuries. The air grew colder with every foot of descent—not the natural chill of underground spaces, but the supernatural cold I'd learned to recognize as the presence of genuine malevolence.

Carolyn walked ahead of me, supported by Ed and Father Martinez. She moved mechanically, her body responding to guidance like a puppet whose strings had been cut. Occasionally her head would turn, her eyes would find mine, and something that wasn't Carolyn would smile.

The basement had been transformed.

Father Gorman's team had spent the afternoon preparing—ritual circle drawn on the packed earth floor, candles placed at cardinal points, chains bolted to the ancient stone where the sacrificial altar still stood. The anchor stone with Bathsheba's name remained where we'd found it, but now it was surrounded by blessed objects, contained by prayers, isolated from the rest of the space.

"Set her down here." Gorman indicated the chair in the center of the circle—heavy wooden construction, reinforced with iron, straps and buckles designed to restrain someone far stronger than they should be.

Carolyn laughed as they lowered her into the chair.

"Such ceremony," Bathsheba's voice emerged from her throat. "I'm flattered."

Father Martinez secured the restraints—wrists, ankles, chest, forehead. His hands were steady, but I could see the sweat on his brow, the slight tremor in his jaw. He'd been briefed on what to expect. Briefing and experience were very different things.

"Everyone take your positions." Gorman moved to stand before the chair, his stole draped over his shoulders, the Rituale Romanum open in his hands. "The rite begins at midnight. Until then, we pray."

The next hour passed in a kind of meditation. Latin prayers filled the basement, layered voices creating a wall of sacred sound. I took my position behind Gorman, flanking him with Ed, ready to intercept any attacks that came during the ritual.

The system pulsed quietly in my awareness.

[CANONICAL EVENT: PERRON EXORCISM]

[ENTITY: BATHSHEBA SHERMAN — TIER 4]

[OBJECTIVE: EXPULSION AND DESTRUCTION]

[WARNING: HIGH LETHALITY SCENARIO]

Midnight came.

Father Gorman's voice rose above the others, transitioning from preparatory prayers to the opening of the Roman Rite.

"Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus, omnis satanica potestas—"

Carolyn's body jerked against the restraints.

"—omnis incursio infernalis adversarii—"

The temperature plummeted. Frost formed on the walls, on the floor, on my eyelashes.

"—omnis legio, omnis congregatio et secta diabolica—"

Bathsheba's scream tore through the basement.

It wasn't human—couldn't be human—a sound that contained centuries of rage and hatred compressed into a single note. The candles guttered. The walls groaned. Something cracked in the ceiling above us.

"STOP!" The voice that emerged from Carolyn's throat was no longer hers. "YOU CANNOT—"

"In nomine et virtute Domini nostri Iesu Christi—"

The first psychic assault hit like a battering ram.

I felt it coming—a split-second warning from senses I'd developed over three years of this work—and threw up my Mental Walls just in time. The force crashed against my defenses, malevolent and hungry, trying to breach my consciousness and scatter my thoughts.

I held.

The attack redirected, seeking easier targets. Father Martinez stumbled, clutching his head. Father Callahan's knees buckled. The lesser priests weren't prepared for this level of assault.

I stepped forward, placing myself between the demon and the exorcists, spreading my awareness to cover as much ground as possible.

[MENTAL WALLS: ACTIVE]

[PSYCHIC STAMINA: 135/135 → 120/135]

[SHIELDING: MULTIPLE TARGETS]

Another wave came. Stronger this time. I caught it, channeled it, felt the energy dissipate against my reinforced consciousness. My nose started bleeding—the physical cost of psychic effort—but I didn't move.

"Paul." Lorraine's voice was calm amid the chaos. "You're doing beautifully."

I wiped blood from my upper lip. "I'll hold as long as I have to."

Father Gorman's prayers continued without interruption. The man was a professional—whatever was happening around him, whatever attacks were being launched, his voice never wavered.

"Adjuro te, serpens antique, per judicem vivorum et mortuorum—"

Carolyn levitated.

The restraints held for one second, two, three—then snapped with sounds like gunshots. The chair rose with her, spinning slowly, until she hovered five feet off the ground, arms spread, face twisted into an expression that belonged in nightmares.

"Is that all you have, priest?" Bathsheba's voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere. "I've eaten better men than you."

"Per eum qui habet potestatem mittendi te in gehennam—"

The next attack was targeted directly at me.

I felt Bathsheba's attention focus, felt her power gather, felt the moment before the strike like the silence before thunder. When it came, it nearly broke me.

Pain. Absolute, overwhelming pain—not physical but spiritual, a direct assault on the core of my being. Images flooded my mind: the Morrison basement, Seraph's claws, the moment in the Moreau cellar when I'd nearly died. Every fear I'd ever felt, every failure I'd ever experienced, compressed into a single instant of psychological annihilation.

I screamed. Couldn't help it. The sound tore out of me without permission.

But I didn't fall. Didn't break. The Mental Walls held, battered but intact, and somewhere deep inside me, the faith that had carried me through three years of this work burned like an ember that couldn't be extinguished.

[SOUL INTEGRITY: 115/115 → 95/115]

[PSYCHIC STAMINA: 120/135 → 50/135]

[WARNING: CRITICAL DRAIN RATE]

"PAUL!" Ed's voice, sharp with concern.

"I'm fine." I wasn't fine. "Keep going. Don't stop."

Father Gorman didn't stop.

Lorraine appeared at my side, her hand on my arm, her psychic presence reinforcing my defenses. Between waves of assault, she spoke quietly into my ear.

"You're doing beautifully. Stay with me. Don't let her inside your head."

I focused on that voice. Anchored myself to it. Let it pull me back from the edge of collapse.

Hour one ended. Hour two began.

Carolyn—Bathsheba—still floated in the center of the basement, laughing at our efforts, hurling attacks that I intercepted and absorbed and somehow survived.

This was going to be a long night.
