Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Eyes That Do Not Blink

The notice was posted before first period.

Not on the board.

Not announced aloud.

It appeared quietly in the class group chat.

"Selected students are to report for individual meetings with the academic committee."

Her name was on the list.

Lucien's eyes darkened the moment he saw it.

"They're moving faster than I thought," he said.

She folded her phone away. "They always do when they think something is hidden."

Lucien leaned closer. "You don't have to go alone."

She shook her head. "This is something I have to face myself."

That answer unsettled him more than fear ever could.

The committee room was colder than the dean's office.

Three adults sat across from her, expressions neutral, hands folded neatly on the table.

"You've attracted unusual attention since transferring," one of them began.

"I focus on my studies," she replied calmly.

"And yet," another said, "rumors follow you."

She met their gaze without flinching. "Rumors aren't proof."

A pause.

"You're aware this school maintains certain standards."

"So do I," she said. "Which is why I've broken none."

The silence that followed was heavy—but not hostile.

Finally, the woman at the center nodded.

"You may return to class."

No accusation.

No punishment.

But no reassurance either.

Outside, Lucien was waiting.

"You're out early," he said.

"They didn't find anything," she replied.

His shoulders loosened slightly.

"They won't stop," he said.

"I know."

They walked together down the hallway, closer than usual—not touching, but unmistakably aligned.

For the first time, she felt something shift.

Not fear.

Resolve.

Later that day, she sat alone in the empty classroom, sunlight stretching across the desks.

Lucien joined her, quiet as always.

"You don't seem shaken," he said.

"I was," she admitted. "But not anymore."

He studied her. "Why?"

"Because hiding forever isn't living," she said softly. "And I'm tired of shrinking myself to make others comfortable."

Lucien smiled—small, proud.

"Then whatever comes," he said, "we face it."

She looked at him.

"We don't run."

Outside, footsteps echoed. Voices passed.

The eyes watching them hadn't disappeared.

But neither had her strength.

And soon—

Very soon—

The truth would no longer stay silent.
