Chapter 72 - CH.72

In the void of space, Thanos spun the Tyrant Blade, deflecting the Ancient One's relentless attack. His gaze flicked downward to Titan, where Doctor Strange and the others had gathered, alongside the five Guardians who had been rescued. But there was no time for concern—an even greater threat loomed before him.

He could feel it: a crisis surging from the Ancient One herself. The dark power radiating from her was growing—refined, immense, surpassing even the level of the so-called Heavenly Father. This was no longer just her own energy.

Without warning, the Ancient One's demeanor shifted. Her spell faltered as a feral intensity overtook her. The runes etched on her forehead shattered their limits, cascading over her entire body. Dark energy bloomed outward, expanding like a living storm, threatening to warp the surrounding space itself.

Then, in the void, Thanos saw them—eyes of deep, malevolent purple, emerging from the darkness. They burned with an unnatural evil, twisting the mind with a glimpse. The very presence of these eyes signaled madness, despair, annihilation.

The Dark Dimension began to press into this universe. Pure, searing darkness surged forth, racing through space at impossible speed. For scale, Titan's star system spanned twelve billion kilometers; light itself would take eleven hours to traverse its diameter. But this darkness moved faster than light, enveloping the entire system in an instant.

Thanos felt it—the rising, irresistible hunger for destruction, a creeping corruption of the soul. His instincts screamed: the dark was trying to claim him. Clenching his left hand, the Infinity Gauntlet flared with orange light as the Soul Stone activated, violently pushing back the corruption.

Dormammu. Of course. The Ancient One must have lost herself, channeling more energy from the Dark Dimension than anyone should survive.

All across the star system, life twisted under the invasion. Eyes blackened, whites disappearing entirely, strange runes burning into foreheads. Puppets of the dark forces, they turned on all that moved, indiscriminate, maddened. Death and slaughter became the law of the land.

On Titan, Doctor Strange acted with razor-sharp precision. Every ally was sent through a portal, sealed just as the Dark Dimension's tendrils reached for entry. Quick. Calculated. He knew, somehow, that Dormammu's arrival was imminent—and he acted to prevent it. Without this foresight, the universe itself would have been consumed, dragged screaming into the dark beyond.

Thanos's mind raced. Dormammu and the Dark Dimension lay outside all known cosmic boundaries. How could the Time Stone have predicted this? Something—or someone—had intervened.

His gaze returned to the Ancient One, and for the first time, a spark of satisfaction lit his eyes. Now he understood who was watching, who had prepared, who had restrained the inevitable chaos. Confidence surged through him.

After all, even chess players need a chessboard. And if someone tries to smash the board? The players do not simply stand aside.

At this point, Dormammu had used the Ancient One as a coordinate, projecting the power of the Dark Dimension onto her, and the shadowy realm itself was converging toward this universe.

Thanos paused for a moment, then clenched his left hand. The Soul Stone flared to life, its orange light bathing the Ancient One.

"The Dark Dimension is coming," he said, his voice calm but heavy. "If it isn't stopped in time, the entire universe could be swallowed. Even Earth won't be spared. Is that what you wanted?"

The Ancient One's eyes, previously clouded with darkness, flickered under the Soul Stone's influence. Slowly, her corrupted soul began to regain clarity, and the shadows in her gaze receded.

Her expression sharpened as she felt the dark energy surrounding her, felt the Dark Dimension pressing closer. As the guardian of Kamar-Taj, she knew Dormammu's power and the catastrophic consequences of his arrival.

"Kill me!" she demanded, voice taut with urgency. "Only my death will sever Dormammu's anchor—only then can he be stopped!"

Thanos shook his head slowly. "Dormammu has already locked onto your soul. Killing you won't break the connection."

Even before he arrived, Dormammu's presence was tethered to this universe through her essence. The Soul Stone could alter a soul, but it could not destroy it—only multiverse-level forces could wield such absolute power. Killing her, Thanos knew, would be meaningless.

The Ancient One's shoulders slumped slightly, but her eyes remained sharp. "Then what can we do?"

Thanos allowed a faint, almost imperceptible smile. He lifted his left hand. "I have the Soul Stone. I cannot destroy a soul, but I can change it. If you work with me to purge the darkness within yourself, we can break Dormammu's hold."

Her resolve hardened instantly. "Then let's begin."

For her, the fate of the universe mattered far more than her own life—or the risk to her soul.

Acknowledging her courage, Thanos activated the Power Stone in the Infinity Gauntlet. A purple energy pulsed outward, amplifying his strength and charging the other Gems. The orange glow of the Soul Stone blazed in tandem.

A profound, almost sentient power began to wash over the Ancient One, halting the strange runes that had spread across her body. She instinctively resisted at first, sensing her memories and beliefs shifting under the cosmic force. But then she thought of the countless lives across the universe, and she let go of her resistance, welcoming the transformation.

The runes faded, the corruption purged, and her soul regained its purity.

Dormammu, projected into the scene, bellowed in fury. "You dare!"

The roar shook the star system itself. Yet he could do nothing. He could leave the Dark Dimension to strike directly, but doing so would leave him vulnerable—without the dimension's boost, multiverse-level beings could annihilate him.

Thanos, already aware of this from his dealings with the Collector, ignored Dormammu's threats and intensified the purification of the Ancient One's soul.
