Marcus suddenly felt foolish. A few minutes ago, he'd been ready to dismiss these gifts as little more than farm produce. Looking back on it now, he had nearly mistaken gold for copper and gems for gravel.
The experience drove home a lesson he probably should have learned long ago: never underestimate anyone, especially people who looked ordinary on the surface.
He was still staring at the dried beef's description when another six villagers stepped forward in pairs carrying three large wooden crates. The Village Chief immediately resumed his role as announcer.
"Thirty jugs of Millbrook's thousand-year grain wine!"
Three crates, ten jugs in each.
Marcus quickly put away the dried beef and accepted the crates, trying not to look too eager. The moment they were safely in his possession, he pulled out one of the wine jugs and checked its stats.
