Chapter 38 - Chapter 38

As I wandered through the bustling streets of this vibrant new city, I felt a mix of dread and trepidation wash over me. Colorful market stalls lined the pathways, their enticing aromas mingling with the sounds of laughter and chatter. However, the thought of approaching a stranger to ask for directions felt daunting. The stories whispered among the locals hinted at unrest surrounding the current king, Nefertari Cobra.

The controversy surrounding him was rife with contradictions and conflicting narratives. On one hand, his supporters hailed him as a benevolent and compassionate ruler, a man who genuinely cared for the well-being of his people. They spoke of his generous acts, his efforts to improve the lives of the impoverished, and his commitment to justice. On the other hand, a vocal faction accused him of engaging in sinister practices, claiming he was dabbling in witchcraft to manipulate the weather, specifically to steal the rain that their crops desperately needed. This allegation seemed preposterous to many, sparking incredulity and debate among the populace. How could anyone, regardless of their power or knowledge, possibly steal something as elusive and vital as rain? The very idea was absurd. I wondered what this meant for the people, as their expressions often betrayed deep concern.

I soon learned that this unease stemmed from a severe drought plaguing the surrounding regions, while the Capital remained untouched, as if encased in a bubble of prosperity. The contrast was stark and unsettling. The citizens I observed exchanged worried glances, their conversations laced with uncertainty about the king's ability—or perhaps his willingness—to address the dire situation outside the city's walls. It was clear that the drought was more than just a climatic challenge; it was a source of fear that rippled through the vibrant life of the Capital, leaving me with an unsettling feeling about the community and its future.

An overwhelming realization washed over me, pulling my thoughts back to the other day at Rain Base. The vivid memory of uncovering that suspicious powder was the root of my current state of fluster. I found myself gazing at the imposing silhouette of the giant castle. I couldn't help but wonder: would it be too reckless to float in silently through one of the windows?

Despite my reservations, I had to remind myself that I was, in fact, a pirate—though I often didn't feel like one and technically I had no bounty over my head. Perhaps I could attribute my predicament to Shanks, who had left me unattended for far too long. Wouldn't it be his fault if I found myself tangled in this current situation? With a deep breath, I steeled myself for the challenge ahead, heart racing at the thought of what awaited me inside that castle.

I wasn't particularly stealthy, but after casting a few glances, most of the spectators quickly averted their eyes, making a concerted effort to appear discreet about their curious glances at the unusual sight before them: me, a random floating mass drifting. I couldn't quite grasp how I had managed to levitate my way into this regal stronghold, gliding through its corridors like some wayward specter, lost between the realms of the living and the ethereal.

Suddenly, a sharp voice shattered my reverie. "You there! HAULT!!!!" The command rang out with authority, echoing off the vaulted ceilings. Startled, I pivoted to face the source of the shout. Before me stood a striking figure—a man adorned in stark white garments that were embellished with a few dark four-pointed stars. However, the purple lines that snaked down from beneath the centers of his piercing eyes caught my attention the most, almost pulsating with an animalistic energy. His expression was a mixture of intrigue and apprehension, and I could sense that he was not accustomed to seeing the likes of me floating about so brazenly.

"Oh…" I murmured, a sense of dread washing over me as I fully realized my precarious position—caught trespassing in a place I had no right to be. Standing before me, if I remembered correctly, was one of the king's most ardent guards; his frame, albeit not the largest, seemed to cast a long shadow that seemed to engulf me. Memories flickered through my mind, reminding me of his unwavering loyalty to the crown, which made my predicament all the more terrifying. Even if he was helpful in the Anime, in truth, I was an intruder.

Fear wrapped around me like a heavy cloak, squeezing the air from my lungs as thoughts swirled chaotically in my head. I desperately needed to convey the urgent issue regarding Crocodile, but uncertainty gnawed at my resolve. The nagging voice in the back of my mind echoed ominously, convincing me that everything was bound to spiral into chaos, as it always did. Each heartbeat felt like a drum of foreboding, accentuating my anxiety.

My throat tightened, as though gripped by an invisible hand, rendering my voice mute. All I wanted to do was disappear, to sink into the shadows and escape the crushing weight of impending failure. It felt as if the world around me was closing in, and the overwhelming desire to hide from it all consumed my every thought.

"I…" The words stumbled around in my mind like frightened rabbits, struggling to emerge and form a coherent thought. I needed to convey the urgent truth: the parched land and relentless drought were the consequences of that insufferable warlord with the gleaming golden hook, who seemed hell-bent on seizing control of the kingdom.

"Who are you!? How did you get in here!?" shouted the guard, whose name I couldn't quite remember.

"I…" My voice faltered, a wave of anxiety washing over me as I grappled with my thoughts. The explanation I hoped to articulate slipped through my fingers like fine-grained sand. Instead, I quickly pulled a small pouch from my pocket containing a portion of the suspicious powder I had pilfered from the Rain Base and offered it to him urgently because I was unable to communicate properly.

A peculiar expression flickered across the guard's face, as if a comedic question mark had sprouted above him, though his features remained mostly tense and unyielding. The moment he recognized what I had handed him, however, his stoic demeanor faltered. "Where did you get this?!" he demanded, his voice dropping into a serious growl, eyebrows knitting together in an expression of both concern and disbelief.

".Rrra..Base." I barely managed to whisper, my voice nearly lost in the vast expanse around us.

"You need to come with me," the guard insisted, his grip firm as he seized my arm, pulling my floating form along in a hurried rush. We sped through the grand and glorious halls of the castle, each step echoing against the ancient stone walls that held centuries of history within their embrace. The air was thick with the scent of polished wood, stone, and old tapestries, the flickering candlelight casting dancing shadows that brought the surroundings' opulence to life.

After navigating a labyrinth of twisting corridors adorned with intricate murals, we arrived before the imposing doors of the throne room. With a dramatic flourish, the door swung open, revealing a scene of regal splendor.

Before us stood a man of striking presence, his tanned skin glowing under the soft light. His curly black hair framed a strong face, accentuated by a meticulously groomed rectangular beard that hinted at authority and charisma. To either side of him loomed a cadre of guards, their imposing figures varying in height but uniformly robust, radiating an aura of formidable strength and unwavering loyalty. The atmosphere was charged with an unspoken tension, underscoring the significance of this encounter.

The concept of causality in the world of One Piece appeared quite nebulous and perplexing. As I entered the grand throne room, I was struck by the sight of so many figures already assembled, their expressions a mix of concern and curiosity. It was baffling to think about how they all managed to gather so swiftly. The guard accompanying me had said little throughout our journey, and there was no indication that a communication device, such as the snail phone, had been used to summon them. Yet, it felt as if a silent understanding or shared instinct had drawn each of these individuals to this pivotal moment. It was as if the air was thick with anticipation, as if they had all sensed that something significant was about to unfold, despite the lack of formal notification. The throne room buzzed with an energy that suggested everyone had been waiting for this moment, ready to confront whatever issue was at hand.
