The soldier's words were loud and clear, a hint of clear madness hidden in them.
These words caused everyone to be surprised, including Captain Mia. However, the surprise soon turned into indifference. It didn't matter how strong or good an awakener was; they had to die once the corruption crossed even one percent.
All the people who were chatting with Xavier warmly felt as if some cold water had been poured over their heads. The scene of the last awakener transforming into that grotesque monster figure flashed in their minds. Instantly, some of them started wiping their hands; the hands of the people who had offered Xavier food turned pale as paper. The other people quickly distanced themselves from him.
Instantly, the mother and daughter pair were left standing alone, the surrounding people looking at them with cold gazes.
"Mumma, what is happening?!" The girl was unable to bear this and started crying.
The mother's emotions were complex. She felt as if her heart had been stabbed by something sharp. She blamed herself; why did she have to approach that man? She just put her daughter's life in danger.
The gratitude that she had for Xavier was long thrown into the gutter. Maybe she was never even grateful in the first place; all that sweet talk from before was just an attempt to foster a relationship.
What could a single mother want in such an apocalyptic situation other than the care and protection of a strong man like Xavier?
Aron's eyes flashed with a strange light. For some reason, when he heard the result of the test, happiness bloomed in his heart.
From the moment the soldier first announced the result of the test to Captain Mia's signal of opening fire, not even a moment had passed. Just as the bullets were about to rain down and tear Xavier's body to minced meat...
"Wait..."
Moving at ghostly speed, Jackie's figure appeared in front of Xavier's body, shielding him from multiple guns pointed in his direction.
"Ohhh, interesting... that badge... A Core Member of the Alliance. What is a person of your standing doing here...?"
Captain Mia's eyebrows rose as she saw the silver glowing medallion in Jackie's hands. Others might not know, but to people like Mia it was quite clear: Jackie was someone with a big background.
Xavier watched Jackie's figure standing in front of him, defending him. A confused look appeared on his face.
His emotions were already in shambles, not understanding just how this so-called Abyssal Corruption reached so high, and the fact that among dozens of people that he saved, no one stood up for him disappointed him slightly. However, he had long lost faith in the system, so he wasn't overly pissed.
If the system was fair, he wouldn't have been thrown into jail to rot for crimes that he never committed.
As such, he could not understand her actions. The scene of the three of them running without looking back when faced with the First Sequence Fire Breathing Tiger was still very vivid in his heart.
So what happened in this short period of time that made her change her heart?
Moreover, what was this Alliance? Core Member?
Some of these terms were so unfamiliar that they did not make any sense.
Aron's face slightly darkened seeing the new development, and when he saw the worried look on Millie's face, it turned completely hideous.
Damn that ungrateful wench! He couldn't stop himself from cursing. Lusting over a man that she didn't even know for more than twenty-four hours, while he had taken care of her for years... Anger surged in Aron's heart.
He had suppressed all this time because of two reasons: one, he wasn't brave enough to act directly, and second, he didn't get an opportunity. But the situation now was perfect. He wanted Xavier to despair for good.
Meanwhile, Jackie was calm and cold, looking directly into Captain Mia's eyes. "There must be something wrong with the testing device. No one with Abyssal Corruption above fifty percent can maintain their sanity... I am sure Captain Mia must be familiar with this term."
There was silence for a moment, with Captain Mia not speaking, but with each moment the look on her face turned increasingly frosty.
"Just because of this reason you interfered with my public duty? If the lives of these hundreds of people were threatened because of this, who would be responsible for this, Respected Madam...?"
These words caused the people watching to look at Jackie with a hint of blame in their eyes.
Although they did not know what the Alliance was or what Core Member signified, they knew the army had saved them and they believed Mia's words. Jackie's actions just now were putting their lives in danger.
"Respected Alliance Madam, I want you to step aside. Or else I would need to take forceful measures. We have exclusive orders to not let any human with Abyssal Corruption roam free. Every single one of them must be put to death without exception."
"Soldiers... Aim. At the count of three, fire."
Click! Click!
Instantly dozens of rifles changed angles, directly aimed at Xavier's head. His head practically glowed crimson with so many laser pointers.
"One..."
Captain Mia's voice echoed like a death bell tolling.
"Two...!"
It was at this time, Xavier, who had been standing like a spectator, finally moved and said, "Step aside. I don't need your protection."
Those simple, plain words caused a frown to appear on Jackie's face, but she did not move. Just at this time, Millie also rushed from the side to stand in front of Xavier protectively.
Even last time she wanted to go save him, but for some reason, now that Xavier's life was once again in danger, Millie could not stop herself.
Aron watched this scene with a stunned expression and called out in anger, "You!! Millie, come back here!!"
Captain Mia's expression didn't change; she simply snorted and uttered a single phrase.
"Three. Open fire!"
Grrr! Grrr!
Instantly the dozens of muzzles lit up, spraying hundreds of bullets instantly at Xavier.
