Chapter 26 - Eye for an eye

"Hmmm!"

Xavier's eyes flashed with a slightly chilling light. For a moment, everything in the world faded—the chaotic voices of the onlookers, the fleeing awakeners, even the shouting soldiers. The only thing that remained in his perception were the bullets tearing through the air. Before he could even blink, the bullets were directly in front of his figure.

He didn't even have time to think properly. Almost instinctively, Spatial Axis Shift activated, a ten-meter invisible circle spewing out with Xavier at the center of it. In this circle, he could change the direction of anything. Up would become down... left... right! As long as he had sufficient mana.

"Up!"

Although everything happened the moment soldiers fired their triggers, the bullets' speed was no joke. By the time the axis tilted for the bullets, they were just too damn close. A single bullet grazed dangerously close to his face, a bloody line appearing at the center of his forehead moving upward. If Xavier was just one nanosecond late, a hole would have been blasted open in the center of his forehead, blasting brain juices in every direction.

Swoosh! Any bullets that were in a ten-meter radius around Xavier had their paths forcefully altered; instead of hitting Xavier, all of them flew toward the sky.

Facing the hundreds of bullets, Xavier came out completely unharmed. Such a thing would have been impossible before the apocalypse.

Badum! Badum! Xavier's heart was beating like a war drum. Although the bullets did nothing to damage him, the psychological impact they had was drastic. After all, he might have gotten mind-bending power, but his psyche was still the same. The fear of bullets was real.

Millie had closed her eyes fearing the worst outcome, but when she didn't hear the sickening wet crunch of blood splashing, she hurriedly jerked her head backward to take a look.

"Impossible!" Her eyes widened like saucers. Behind her stood Xavier's figure completely unharmed. "You... how is this possible... Argh! Thank god you are fine. Leave! Escape!"

Millie's emotions were in complete jeopardy. She didn't know what to feel. A part of her was happy that he was unharmed, and the other part failed to comprehend the situation, so the words that came out of her mouth were halved and broken.

On the other hand, Captain Mia's expression turned solemn. Her biggest reliance were bullets, and now they had proved useless. However, she couldn't let go of Xavier just like this; he had to die.

If Xavier could have heard her thoughts, he would have definitely asked, What's with this hatred, lady...?

The next moment, Captain Mia turned to the other awakeners beside her. "Help the military deal with this corrupted monster. The army will reward you handsomely for your efforts..."

Hearing the first half of her sentence, a few awakeners had even started backing away. There was no way they were going to risk their lives. However, this corrupted young man was clearly strong, but when she mentioned rewards, their thoughts took a complete one-eighty-degree turn.

The first to take action was none other than Aron.

He jumped and started charging toward Xavier, the temperature around his figure plummeting rapidly. "So the corruption is the secret behind all of your power... No wonder he got so strong so fast."

While charging he yelled, "Projectile attacks seem to be useless against him! Don't bother using them."

The other awakeners—two men and one woman—nodded. This was very clear from the fact of how the bullets changed direction.

"Mia, Millie, step aside. We need to get rid of him for humanity..."

Once the distance between Aron and Xavier was less than ten meters, a terrifying chill spread in the area, the solid floor slowly turning into an ice shelf. "I will restrict his movements. All of you attack simultaneously..."

Xavier looked at the changing situation with a calm look. As the threat approached him, his raging heart calmed down. In just minutes, however, his legs were frozen solid, the ice reaching up to his knees, not allowing him to move one inch.

One by one, in the hands of the two charging awakeners, sharp swords appeared out of nowhere. Probably they were ranked within one hundred thousand, possessing an inventory.

Meanwhile, the lone female awakener's eyes glowed slightly green. The next moment, a thick greenish smoke covered Xavier's figure. The fog seemed toxic, and even poisonous; he didn't dare to breathe.

Watching the development, a smile appeared on Aron's face. "He can't run. Finish him fast."

Millie's anger exploded. "How can you do this to him, Aron? After all the times he saved you? If it wasn't for him, you would still be in the prison, in the stomach of some monster..."

Aron's expression darkened firmly hearing the genuine concern in her voice. This bitch...

"Millie, don't act as if you don't know. He was in the prison for a reason. He is a criminal, so capturing him is our duty. Someone who can commit a crime once can do it once more..."

"Damn it!" Millie cursed, seeing her words seemed to have no effect. She tried to stop one of the sword-wielding awakeners, but he just brushed past her. Almost at the same time, both of them slashed at Xavier's locked figure with all their fury.

This son of... Xavier was pissed big time. This Aron was getting on his nerves again and again. First he had tried to block his exit when he was escaping from that world, and now this.

Enough is enough!

He used the Spatial Axis Shift to deflect the sword away from his body. This time the mana used was considerably higher than the last time.

The sudden direction change caused the two awakeners to lose their balance and fall on the ground.

"Break for me!" Xavier gritted his teeth and used all his strength to break the ice holding him back. At this point Xavier's strength was no joke; after the fight with the tiger, his strength attribute was hitting 41. Four times the strength of a normal man.

Warden Ruinblade also appeared in his hand, adding another point to his strength. The slight resistance that he felt almost instantly vanished; multiple cracks appeared on the ice sheet and Xavier was free.

"Damn you ungrateful bastards... Die for me."

If possible, Xavier didn't want to kill anyone, but that doesn't mean he would wipe his neck and wait for others to sever it.

An eye for an eye. Those who had thoughts of killing should be prepared to face the consequences.

With all these thoughts in his mind, he immediately jumped toward the nearest awakener, Warden Ruinblade raised upwards.

Puchi! A head flew in the air.

"NO! Murder! This demon killed him."

"Someone save me..."

Seeing the blood, the crowd went mad; people started screaming and fleeing.
