Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

BEACH LIGHTS AND BAD DECISIONS

By evening, the calm of the morning felt like a distant dream.

Elliana stood in front of her mirror, tugging nervously at the hem of her dress. It wasn't too short—she'd checked at least five times—but it felt different wearing it tonight.

Eighteen felt heavier than she expected, like freedom came with an invisible weight.

Her phone buzzed again.

Samantha: I'm outside. If you're not down in two minutes, I'm coming up.

Elliana grabbed her bag, took one last look around her room, and slipped out quietly.

Her dad was in the living room, jacket on, radio crackling softly with police chatter. Work never truly left him.

"Be careful," he said without looking up.

"I will," she replied, forcing a smile.

The beach was already alive when they arrived—music booming from hidden speakers, bonfires flickering against the darkening sky, laughter blending with the crash of waves.

Strings of lights hung between palm trees, turning the sand into something magical and unreal.

"This is perfect," Samantha yelled over the music, already dancing. "Your first night as an adult!"

Elliana laughed, letting herself relax. For the first time all day, she stopped thinking about rules, expectations, and the watchful eyes of her father.

Tonight was hers.

They danced barefoot in the sand, took pictures they'd probably regret later, and screamed the lyrics to songs they barely knew.

Someone handed Elliana a drink—she hesitated, then took a small sip, heart racing as if she'd crossed some invisible line.

Then the sound changed.

At first, she thought it was part of the music—deep, vibrating bass echoing from somewhere beyond the beach. But it grew louder. Sharper.

Engines.

One by one, cars appeared near the edge of the road above the sand, headlights cutting through the night. Sleek, low, fast-looking.

The crowd's energy shifted instantly—from carefree to electric.

"What's happening?" Elliana asked.

Samantha's eyes lit up. "Street racers. They show up sometimes."

The engines revved in unison, a sound that sent a thrill straight through Elliana's chest.

She didn't know why she felt it—fear, excitement, curiosity—it all tangled together.

And then the sirens wailed.

Red and blue lights flooded the beach, reflecting off metal and water. People scattered, shouting, grabbing their things.

Panic replaced laughter in seconds.

"Ellie, move!" Samantha yelled, pulling her arm.

But Elliana froze.

One of the cars peeled away, tires screeching, sand flying. Another followed. Then another. In the chaos, her gaze locked onto a single figure standing beside a black car, calm amid the madness.

He looked straight at her.

Dark eyes. Sharp jaw. A crooked smile that didn't belong in a moment like this.

Danger wrapped in confidence.

For a heartbeat, the world narrowed to just the two of them. Then he slid into the driver's seat, the engine roaring to life.

Sirens screamed louder as the car shot forward, disappearing into the night.

Elliana's heart pounded long after the police cleared the beach.

She didn't know his name. She didn't know who he was.

But she knew one thing with terrifying certainty—

That night hadn't just been a celebration.

It had been a beginning.
