Ubuyashiki Kagaya sat kneeling before a low table. When Kael entered, a brilliant, weary smile spread across the Master's face.
"Kael, you've arrived."
"It's been a few days, Kagaya. How's the hardware holding up?"
"I'm alright, though the resolution is dropping," Kagaya replied calmly, as if he weren't describing his slow descent into blindness. "I suspect I will be completely dark before long."
"You haven't been secretly hiding under your covers crying about it, have you?"
Kael's single sentence pierced right through Kagaya's serene facade. Beneath the title of Master, he was still just a young man who had once been healthy. He looked at Kael and sighed. "...You, really. Can't you leave me some dignity in front of the children?"
Kagaya pulled himself together to introduce his five children: Kiriya, Hinaki, Nichika, Kanata, and Kuina.
The five children sat formally, greeting Kael with a level of breeding that lacked the messy liveliness typical of their age. Kael looked at them—all dressed in traditional girls' clothing—and squinted.
"Wait a second, which one of these is the son?"
"Uncle, I am the heir of the family," Kiriya stood up.
The males of the Ubuyashiki line were raised as girls until age thirteen to ward off the family curse's early onset. Kael leaned in close to Kagaya, a strange glint in his eyes. "So you spent a decade in a kimono too, Kagaya? Sister-in-law, quickly! Bring out a set of your clothes for the Master. Seeing Kagaya cross-dress is my life's mission."
Kagaya's composure nearly cracked. He turned to his wife, Amane. "It is time. We may begin the meal."
Dinner was surprisingly lively. To host Kael, the usually bland menu had been supplemented with meat. Kael treated the headquarters like his own estate, his casual eating manner actually improving Kagaya's appetite. After the meal, the Calculating Survivor got to work.
Kagaya assigned his two older daughters, Hinaki and Nichika, to assist Kael, along with several members of the Kakushi. Since the power grid hadn't reached these mountains, Kael had to install a full generation and storage system before deploying the UV array.
The two sisters followed Kael like quiet, exquisite dolls, their large eyes shimmering with curiosity as Kael tinkered with his modified diesel generator.
"Uncle, for you," Hinaki said, handing him a silk handkerchief to wipe the grease from his hands.
"No need, Hinaki. Such a pretty thing shouldn't be stained with oil," Kael said.
"Uncle, you can tell us apart?" Hinaki asked, shocked.
"Red hair tie for you, yellow for Nichika. Basic pattern recognition," Kael explained. "Now, you two shouldn't just watch. Come help. Want to know what 'electricity' actually is?"
The sisters approached the steel machine, wide-eyed. Kael's mischievous streak surfaced.
"Aah!!" Hinaki jumped back, clutching her hand. Kael had given her a mild static shock.
"Haha! That's the taste of electricity. Novel, isn't it?"
"Uncle, you're mean!" Nichika glared, shielding her sister like a protective kitten.
"Don't bully the Master's daughters," Shinobu Kocho interrupted, her voice cool as she walked over. Her eyelids twitched. To actually bully children... this man truly is not a serious person.
"If it isn't Miss Kocho. I really couldn't tell you were a Hashira from your height. Insect Breathing, right? Sounds unique."
"If you are willing, I could let you experience its uniqueness first-hand," Shinobu replied sarcastically. She still remembered Kael's "malnourished" comments from the carriage.
"No rush. I'll satisfy that curiosity later," Kael said. He had already cleared his plan with Kagaya: he would install the UV lights in exchange for learning other Breathing Styles.
For the next few hours, Kael used Shinobu as a high-speed contractor.
"Tilt it a bit more to the left, Miss Kocho." "Wait... move it back to the right." "Actually, the original position was perfect."
Shinobu's knuckles were white as she gripped the high-potency UV lamps. She suppressed the urge to drop one on his head, only completing the installation because it concerned the Master's safety.
"Is this enough?" she asked, her "gentle" smile now a mask of pure numbness.
The sound of the generator turning over was Kael's only answer. He handed the power switch to Hinaki. "Press it. Don't worry, no shocks this time."
Hinaki gathered her courage and clicked the switch.
In an instant, the violet light detonated across the main residence. Night was transformed into a dreamlike day. The wisteria flowers shimmered in harmony with the UV glow, creating a sanctuary of light.
The lights did more than dispel the darkness; they dispelled the terror that had haunted the girls' hearts since birth. For a few moments, the heavy responsibility of their bloodline felt lighter.
"Uncle..." Hinaki murmured.
"Stop right there. Call me 'Brother' (Onii-chan) from now on. I'm too young to be an Uncle."
"But..."
"It's settled. You call me Brother, and I'll call your dad 'Little Brother.' Separate social tracks."
Hinaki blinked, tempted. Looking at the beautiful purple light, she whispered, "Onii-chan~"
"So cute! Now you, Nichika."
"O-onii-chan~"
Kael beamed, patting their heads. "Oh, absolutely adorable."
Shinobu Kocho watched from the side, a vein throbbing in her forehead as she watched Kael Wayne successfully corrupt the most well-bred children in Japan.
