As autumn approached, golden leaves had started coating the roadside, marking the season's quiet arrival.
Time moves so fast, I mused as I sat in the carriage, watching the world roll by outside.
Boulevard vendors called out their wares beyond the window. "Hot chestnuts! Fresh roasted chestnuts, come get them!"
The rich, nutty scent drifted into the carriage through the autumn air.
I turned instinctively toward the sound, my eyes drawn to the chestnut vendor's stall.
Those chestnuts looked perfect—glossy and fresh under the sunlight. Their shells had cracked just enough to show the golden meat inside, so tempting I could practically taste their sweetness.
My mouth watered just looking at them.
Penny noticed me staring at the stall and smiled. "Miss, do you want some chestnuts? Should I grab you a bag?"
Once upon a time, I would've stopped for chestnuts without thinking twice.
