Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: The Primordial Discovery

The dawn mist clung to the sect's outer mountains like a silken veil. Lui Yan stood at the edge of the cliff, gazing at the valley below. Today, Elder Hua Yun had led a small group of disciples deeper into the mountains - farther than any of them had been before. Rumor had it that hidden within this part of the peaks were rare spirit herbs… and perhaps, something far more extraordinary.

Lui Yan's heart pounded, not only from anticipation but from an unshakable sense of foreboding. The air itself felt charged, alive, as if the mountains whispered secrets only the prepared could hear.

-

The party of five - Lui Yan, Yan Mei, Lin Yumo, Su Qingxue, and a few other outer disciples - followed the winding stone path that disappeared into dense fog. Every step seemed heavier than the last, weighed down by the hum of unseen qi.

"Be careful," Elder Hua Yun called from ahead, her voice carrying authority and calm in equal measure. "These peaks are old. They remember everything. Treat the land with respect, and it may favor you."

Lui Yan nodded, gripping the strap of his satchel, which contained several herbs collected from previous expeditions. He couldn't shake the feeling that something watched them from the mist - silent, patient, waiting.

After hours of climbing, Lin Yumo's sharp eyes caught a faint shimmer behind a waterfall cascading down the mountainside. "Look over there!" he exclaimed. "That's not just water… there's a hollow behind it!"

The group approached cautiously. Su Qingxue's hand rested on her sword, ready for any threat. Lui Yan could sense the qi flowing strangely around the cave entrance — irregular, ancient, and… powerful.

Elder Hua Yun's eyes glinted. "This cave has been whispered about for centuries. It is said to contain a Primordial Artifact - one that even Inner Sect disciples rarely glimpse. Approach with care."

The disciples exchanged glances. Excitement and apprehension mingled like storm clouds.

-

Inside, the cave was wider than it appeared from the outside. Stalactites hung like jagged teeth, dripping water into crystal-clear pools that reflected faint, ethereal light.

At the center of the cavern sat a pedestal, bathed in a soft golden glow. On it rested a small, intricately carved orb, faint pulses of qi emanating from it like the heartbeat of the earth itself.

Lui Yan's breath caught. "It… it's real."

Yan Mei's eyes widened. "The legends were true… a Primordial Artifact… untouched for centuries."

But before anyone could step closer, a tremor shook the cavern. Dust fell from the ceiling, and the faint glow of the orb intensified, filling the cave with golden light.

"Step back!" Elder Hua Yun commanded. "The artifact tests all who approach. Only those with clarity of mind may survive its trial."

The orb hovered slightly above the pedestal, rotating slowly. Suddenly, a figure of pure light materialized - a guardian spirit, ancient and imposing. Its eyes, like molten gold, studied each disciple individually.

"You seek the power of the Primordial Artifact," it intoned. "But are you worthy? Only those who balance strength, wisdom, and heart may claim it."

The disciples stiffened. Lui Yan felt a surge of pressure in his chest - his qi fluctuated violently, as if the very air weighed against him. Lin Yumo's usual chatter faltered, and even Su Qingxue's calm demeanor betrayed a flicker of tension.

The guardian raised a hand, and illusions sprang forth - visions of failure, betrayal, and fear. Lui Yan saw himself falling into a chasm, watched by unseen enemies. Yan Mei's image twisted, her voice calling for help in panic.

His heart raced. Stay calm… focus…

Breathing steadily, Lui Yan recalled the lessons Elder Hua Yun had taught him: perception, instinct, and composure. Slowly, he extended his qi, stabilizing the illusory chaos around him. His mind cleared, cutting through fear like a knife through mist.

-

The guardian's form solidified, nodding slowly. "Your heart is steady, your mind clear… but the final test is understanding: the power you seek is not for glory, but for purpose. Show me your intent."

Lui Yan stepped forward. "I seek to protect those who cannot protect themselves. I seek to heal, to preserve life, and to guard this land."

The light flared brighter, then softened. The orb descended gently into his hands. Its warmth seeped into his palms, and Lui Yan felt the fusion of energy and knowledge coursing through him.

The guardian bowed, dissipating into the air. "Then claim it, young cultivator. The path ahead is yours… but shadows gather, and many will covet what you now hold."

Before the group could fully rejoice, a sudden roar echoed through the cave. From the shadows, a figure cloaked in black lunged toward Lui Yan.

Chen Wuying's energy signature exploded outward - he had followed them, intent on seizing the artifact by force. His aura surged, hovering between Spirit Severing Peak and Void Ascension Mid, a dangerous range for any outer disciple.

"Step aside, Lui Yan," Chen Wuying growled. "That artifact belongs to someone strong enough to wield it properly… and that is me."

Lui Yan's heart pounded. He had anticipated rivalries, but not direct assault at this early stage. He instinctively held the orb, and the artifact's energy pulsed violently, forming a protective aura around him.

Su Qingxue and Lin Yumo moved swiftly, intercepting Chen Wuying. Yan Mei's eyes glowed as she channeled her qi to stabilize Lui Yan.

The cavern became a storm of clashing energy, golden light meeting dark qi, the echoes reverberating like thunder. Lui Yan pushed himself beyond his limits, guided by instinct and the artifact's support.

-

After a tense struggle, Lui Yan managed to push back Chen Wuying, forcing him to retreat. The artifact's power had surged outward during the confrontation, sending shockwaves that rippled through the mountains.

In the distance, other cultivators from the sect felt the tremor. Rumors would soon spread: a novice outer disciple had claimed a Primordial Artifact and unleashed its might. Only twenty cultivators in the entire continent were at a comparable level of recognition - and Lui Yan had just added himself to that list.

He stood, breathing heavily, the artifact warm in his hands. His companions gathered around, their expressions a mixture of awe, relief, and cautious excitement.

Elder Hua Yun's voice rang in his mind, calm and commanding: The path ahead will be harder than you imagine. Treasure the lessons, trust your heart… and beware the shadows that now know your name.

That night, back at the outer courtyard, Lui Yan and Yan Mei sat silently by the riverbank. The artifact rested safely in the sect's containment sphere, but the energy lingered like a hum in the air.

"You were amazing," Yan Mei said softly, offering him a piece of spirit fruit. "I… I was scared for a moment, but you held yourself so steadily."

Lui Yan smiled faintly, the warmth of her words more comforting than any technique. "We did it together. The artifact… it's only the beginning. Many more challenges will come."

Her eyes met his, shining under the starlight. "Then we'll face them… together."

Lui Yan's heart skipped a beat. The artifact had elevated his power, but it had also deepened the connections around him - trust, camaraderie, and subtle affection he hadn't dared name yet.

Above them, the stars shimmered, silent witnesses to a young cultivator's ascent - the beginning of legends, shadows gathering, and a journey that would shake the continent itself.
