Time in Sunagakure was marked by the shifting of dunes and the relentless grit in one's teeth. Sayo had been enrolled in the Academy for half a year, and the experience remained more of a trial than a triumph. In physical training, he was the perennial anchor, his shuriken throws so lacking in kinetic energy they barely disturbed the dust. His only solace was the academic curriculum; his photographic memory and analytical processing allowed him to solve theoretical problems before his peers had even finished reading them.
Regarding his Chakra, he was trapped in a frustrating stalemate. He had mastered the technique of refinement—his control was surgical—but the output was stagnant. His body, that "barren land," could only yield a trickle of physical energy. He was like a master pilot trapped in a cockpit with a thimble-sized fuel tank.
One evening, Sharyu returned home earlier than usual. He found Sayo staring at his bruised palms—the cost of another failed Taijutsu drill. After a long silence, Sharyu spoke. "Sayo, your control is stable now. It is time we tested your Chakra Nature."
"Nature?" Sayo's curiosity spiked. He knew the theory: every shinobi had an affinity that dictated which elemental releases they could master.
Sharyu retrieved a small, locked box from a high shelf and produced a single slip of Chakra Induction Paper. "Inject a single thread of your energy. Just one."
Sayo held the paper with a solemn focus. He mobilized his meager but incredibly obedient chakra and pushed it into the fibers.
The reaction was instantaneous and dual-layered. The center of the paper suddenly turned damp and soft, taking on the heavy, cloying texture of wet mud. Simultaneously, the edges became brittle and dry, followed by a sharp hiss as a hairline fracture—a clean, surgical cut—sliced through the corner.
"This is..." Sharyu's breath hitched. "Earth... and Wind. A dual affinity."
Earth represented the foundational: defensive, heavy, and solid. Wind represented the kinetic: sharp, swift, and penetrating.
"Nature is only the beginning," Sharyu warned, putting the paper away. "To perform Ninjutsu, you need Hand Seals, precise flow, and, most importantly, a reservoir of energy to fuel the change. You are still far from that threshold."
But Sayo wasn't discouraged. To an engineer, knowing the "system specifications" was half the battle. "Father, do we have any records? Anything I can study?"
Sharyu hesitated, then moved a heavy cabinet to reveal a hidden compartment in the sandstone wall. Inside lay several scrolls, thick with the dust of years. "These are my notes from the Puppet Brigade," Sharyu whispered. "Wind and Earth Release fundamentals. Look at them, but do not—under any circumstances—attempt to practice them yet. Your body cannot handle the feedback."
Sayo devoured the scrolls. He spent his nights analyzing the Shape Transformation of Wind and the Nature Transformation of Earth. But while he was deep-diving into a scroll regarding Earth Flow Wall, he noticed a structural anomaly. The scroll's core was hollow.
He carefully manipulated the end-cap and a smaller, ancient parchment roll slid out. The handwriting was archaic, filled with terminology that made Sayo's heart race: Magnetic Flux, Ferrous Suspension, Particle Synchronization. The name at the top of the manuscript was Suna Mon—the Second Kazekage.
The document detailed a failed research project: the attempt to fuse Wind and Earth natures to manipulate the magnetic properties of iron sand. The goal was a Kekkei Genkai called Magnet Release. The Second Kazekage had hypothesized its existence, but the research had hit a bottleneck and was eventually discarded as an "impractical fantasy."
Sayo's mind ignited. Magnet Release. The signature power of the strongest Kazekage.
He looked at the secret compartment, then at his father. The pieces of the puzzle clicked. His father's surname, the way Chiyo treated them with a distant, familial reverence... Sharyu was likely a descendant of Suna Mon. A side branch whose blood was too thin to inherit the power, but who had kept the "source code" of the family's greatest dream.
If the research failed because they lacked a 'key factor,' Sayo mused, his eyes scanning the failed formulas, maybe that factor isn't spiritual. Maybe it's physics.
As an automation engineer, Sayo understood electromagnetism better than any shinobi in this era. He knew that you didn't need a massive power source if you had a perfect Conductor and an efficient Circuit.
Weak body? Low reserves? If he could master the manipulation of iron sand through magnetic fields, he wouldn't need to throw shuriken with his own strength. He could use his chakra as a "signal" to move external masses. It was the Principle of the Lever applied to Ninjutsu.
He looked at the manuscript with an expression of cold, brilliant determination. The Second Kazekage had left a dead end. But Sayo, a soul from an age of machines, was going to build a bridge across it.
