"Kira?" Adriana gasped, recognizing the symbols on the girl's coat.
"I'm the one the Librarian sent away before the 'Silence' broke," the girl said, her eyes darting to the ceiling. "I'm Sola. And you shouldn't have come down here. These tunnels aren't empty; they're the city's Unconscious."
Sola opened her book—the Master Index. It wasn't a list of names, but a map of the "Emotional Plumbing" of New York. "The Sentries are afraid of this place because it's unfiltered. If they stay here too long, their porcelain shells will crack from the pressure of the 'Raw Data' leaking from the walls."
The Hub of the Deep
Sola led them to an abandoned station—City Hall Loop—which had been transformed into a sprawling archive. Here, the "Unclaimed" weren't hollow ghosts; they were busy. They were sorting through the "Trash Code" the Overseers discarded, looking for "Relics" of human feeling.
"The Librarian knew the Overseers would try to 'Mute' the surface," Sola explained. "He had me steal the Root Directory of the city's heart before the Ghost-Station fell. But there's a problem."
She pointed to the Master Index. A large section of the map was turning a bruised, pulsing red.
"The Empire State Building isn't just a harvester anymore," Sola said. "It's a Drill. They're trying to pierce the bedrock of reality to reach the Original Source Code. If they find it, they won't just format the people—they'll rewrite the very concept of 'New York' into a parking lot for their servers."
