Chapter 45 - The Mother’s Maw

"You have the heart of a Weaver, Adriana," her mother whispered, her voice like the rustle of dead leaves. "But I was built to be the Drain. I can hold the silence so you can keep the song."

"Mother, no," Adriana reached out, but her hand passed right through her mother's chest. "If you take in that much Static, there won't be enough of 'You' left to stay anchored. You'll become the very thing you're fighting."

"I am already the Void, my child. Let me be a useful one."

As the Liquid Static rushed toward the group, Adriana's mother stepped into the center of the tunnel. She opened her arms, and her body began to stretch, turning into a massive, swirling Singularity. The grey sludge didn't hit the floor; it was sucked into the starlit darkness of her form.

The tunnel grew terrifyingly quiet. The sound of the Empire State drill above was muffled by the sheer density of the Void.

"Go!" her mother's voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere at once. "The Index... take it to the roots! I can only hold the flood for a few minutes!"

Adriana, Sola, and the children scrambled deeper into the dark, leaving the Void-Anchor behind. As they ran, Adriana felt a physical ache in her chest—the "Bridge" between her and her mother was fraying, the threads snapping one by one as the Static overwhelmed the shadow.

The Bedrock Gates

They reached the lowest point of the city: a chamber of raw schist and ancient granite where the foundation of Manhattan met the "Original Logic." Here, the walls weren't made of stone, but of Primal Code—the first lines ever written for the world.

A massive golden drill-bit, fifty feet wide, was humming just inches above the ceiling, the vibration making their teeth rattle.

"The Overseers are almost through," Sola shouted over the roar. "If that drill touches the Bedrock, it will 'Inject' the new laws! We have to use the Master Index to Relocate the Root!"
