Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Do Not Rely on Him

The corridors didn't stay still.

They rearranged themselves when no one was watching—walls sliding, paths narrowing, lights blinking out one by one. Every few steps, someone would swear they'd already passed the same marking before.

"This place is messing with our heads," Luca muttered.

Kai walked at the back now.

Not because he wanted to.

Because no one asked him to walk beside them.

Mei kept glancing over her shoulder, worry written all over her face, but even she didn't reach for his hand again. The memory of the door—of the shadow—hung between them like a fragile glass wall.

Then the voice returned.

"NOTICE."

They froze.

"Stage Two Rule Activated."

The red lights along the corridor flared brighter.

"Effective immediately: Kai Vex is restricted."

Kai's stomach dropped.

"Any assistance, interference, or influence from the marked player will result in immediate penalty."

Freya turned slowly. "Restricted… how?"

The answer came instantly.

The shadow behind Kai locked in place.

He tried to move—

pain flared through his chest.

Kai gasped and fell to one knee.

"Kai!" Mei rushed toward him.

"Don't," the voice warned.

"Physical proximity detected."

Mei froze mid-step.

Kai raised his hand. "It's okay. Stop."

The pain faded slightly.

Luca swallowed. "So… we're on our own now."

The corridor ahead split into four paths.

Each path pulsed with a different light.

Above them, symbols appeared:

Courage

Trust

Truth

Fear

Freya read them aloud. "Four paths… four trials?"

"Correct," the voice said.

"One player per path."

Mei's eyes widened. "Separate us? That's insane."

Kai forced himself to stand. "I can't help. But listen to me."

The shadow twitched violently.

"Final warning."

Kai bit back a groan. "Whatever you see—don't believe it immediately. The game lies by omission."

The paths began to close.

Panic set in.

"Wait!" Freya cried. "Who goes where?"

No time.

The floor shifted.

Mei was pulled toward Truth.

Luca toward Courage.

Freya toward Trust.

Kai reached out instinctively—

Agony ripped through him.

He screamed.

The shadow wrapped tighter around his body, forcing him backward into the remaining path.

Fear.

The paths sealed.

Silence.

Kai — Fear

Darkness swallowed him whole.

Not a corridor.

Not a room.

Just endless black.

Then whispers began.

Not the game's voice.

Familiar ones.

"You'll hurt them."

"They're scared of you."

"They should be."

A faint light appeared.

Kai saw the others—standing together.

Laughing.

Relieved.

Without him.

Mei's voice echoed softly:

"Maybe it's safer if Kai doesn't come back."

Kai's chest tightened.

"No," he whispered. "That's not real."

The light flickered.

The image cracked.

The game reacted.

"Fear acknowledged," the voice said.

"Progression accelerating."

Chains rose from the darkness, circling Kai—but stopping just short of touching him.

"Overcome fear," the voice continued, "or become it."

Kai closed his eyes.

And for the first time since the Death Game began…

He didn't think about surviving.

He thought about protecting them—even if they never trusted him again.

The shadow behind him stilled.

The chains retreated.

A door appeared.

Unlocked.

Somewhere else, Mei screamed.

And the system announced:

"Trial failure detected."
