Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Thing Between Stages

The ground split open.

Kai barely had time to grab Vex before they both fell—

Not into darkness…

But into something worse.

They landed hard on damp stone. The air here was thick, suffocating, filled with the smell of wet earth and decay. Kai coughed, pushing himself up, his chest burning.

No hallway.

No pillars.

No room.

This place was different.

It felt unfinished.

Like the space between stages.

Vex stood slowly, wiping blood from the corner of his mouth. "Where… are we?"

Kai looked around.

The walls weren't walls.

They were shifting layers of shadow, folding over each other like torn curtains. The ceiling moved like a living sky.

And in the distance…

Something was breathing.

Deep.

Slow.

Hungry.

Kai's stomach tightened. "This isn't a stage."

Vex's voice dropped. "Then what is it?"

Before Kai could answer, the badges in their hands pulsed violently.

Heat surged through Kai's palm.

Then—

A sound.

Clang.

Metal scraping stone.

Kai froze.

Vex turned sharply. "Did you hear that?"

Another sound followed.

Clang… drag… clang…

Something was moving toward them.

Not rushing.

Not stalking.

Marching.

Kai's eyes narrowed into the darkness ahead.

A figure emerged.

At first, it looked like a person wearing chains.

Then it stepped closer.

And Kai realized the chains weren't worn.

They were part of it.

Fused into black flesh, wrapped around its limbs like restraints that had failed to hold it.

Its head was bowed.

Its face hidden.

But the moment it lifted its gaze—

Kai's blood went cold.

Its eyes were empty holes, spilling thick shadow like smoke.

And carved into its chest was a single word:

PUNISHMENT

Vex took a step back. "That's… not one of the stage monsters."

Kai swallowed. "No."

The creature tilted its head slowly.

Then the voice of the game echoed faintly, distorted, like it was far away.

"UNSCHEDULED ENTITY DETECTED…"

The creature twitched.

As if irritated.

Then it spoke.

Not with a mouth.

Inside their minds.

"Players…"

Kai's knees nearly buckled at the sound.

The voice was ancient.

Broken.

Like something that had been trapped for too long.

"You are not supposed to be here."

Vex's voice trembled. "We didn't choose this!"

The creature took one step forward.

The ground cracked beneath its foot.

"The game creates stages…"

Another step.

"…but I exist between them."

Kai's badge burned again.

The creature's gaze locked onto it.

"You carry trust."

Its voice twisted into something darker.

"So I will teach you betrayal."

Suddenly—

The chains shot forward.

Fast.

Violent.

Kai barely reacted in time, shoving Vex aside as metal slammed into the stone where he'd been standing.

The impact sent dust exploding into the air.

"Move!" Kai shouted.

They ran.

Not toward escape—there was none—

Only away.

The creature didn't chase like an animal.

It followed like a curse.

Every step it took made the shadows ripple.

The space warped.

Kai's breath came sharp. "We can't outrun it!"

Vex's eyes flashed. "Then what do we do?"

Kai's mind raced.

The badges.

The halves.

They had stopped the whispering before.

Maybe—

"Kai!" Vex yelled.

Kai turned—

The chains were coming again.

Too fast.

Too close.

Kai lifted his badge half instinctively.

Vex did the same.

The metal pulsed—

A bright shockwave of white light burst between them.

The chains froze midair.

The creature shrieked.

Not in pain.

In rage.

"THAT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU!"

The shadows exploded outward.

Kai staggered, vision blurring.

The creature stepped back, trembling.

For the first time…

It hesitated.

Kai realized something terrifying.

This thing wasn't part of the game.

The game was afraid of it.

And that meant—

They were deeper than they were ever meant to go.

A裂 sound ripped through the air.

A door appeared behind them, flickering like a glitch.

Vex grabbed Kai's arm. "That's our way out!"

Kai stared at the creature.

It lowered its head slowly.

"Run," it whispered.

"While you still believe in each other."

Kai's chest tightened.

They sprinted through the door—

And the moment they crossed—

The door slammed shut.

The world snapped back into place.

But the cold voice of the game returned, sharper than ever.

"EMERGENCY STAGE LOCKDOWN."

Kai's heart pounded.

Vex whispered, "What did we just meet?"

Kai stared into the darkness ahead.

"I think…"

He swallowed.

"I think we met something the game can't control."

And somewhere far behind them…

Chains dragged softly across stone.

Still following.
