The air in the Korean Hunter Association headquarters felt thin, as if the atmospheric pressure had suddenly dropped. For most, it was just a humid Tuesday afternoon, but for Woo Jinchul, it felt like the breath of a god was hovering just inches from the back of his neck.
He stood in the Monitoring Room, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. His eyes were fixed on a massive holographic display of the Seoul Metropolitan area. Glowing blue dots represented active Gates, their mana signatures pulsing rhythmically.
"Sir, we've analyzed the readings you flagged," a technician said, her voice shaking slightly. "You were right. The mana fluctuations in the Songpa-gu district aren't following the standard dissipation curve. It's a C-Rank Gate, officially registered to a strike team led by Song Chiyul... but the 'background hum' is erratic."
Jinchul didn't answer immediately. He knew this "hum." It was the frequency of the Architect. In his previous life, he hadn't been there for the Double Dungeon. He had only seen the aftermath—the broken bodies, the traumatized survivors, and the birth of the world's greatest Hunter.
It's starting, Jinchul thought, his heart hammering against his ribs. The wheels of the System are turning. But why does it feel so much more aggressive this time?
The War Room: Strategic Divergence
Jinchul turned away from the screen and walked into the briefing room where his hand-picked "Wolf Unit" stood at attention. Unlike the standard Hunter mobs, these men and women moved with the synchronized grace of a professional military unit.
"At ease," Jinchul barked. He tapped a tablet, casting a series of architectural blueprints onto the wall—projections of the dungeon's internal structure based on mana-echoes. "We are heading to the Songpa-gu site. Nominally, it's a C-Rank. In reality, I suspect it is a 'Reawakened Dungeon' or a unique Class Gate."
He looked at his lead lieutenant, Kang Sang-min. "Sang-min, this is where the plan deviates from Association protocol. Usually, the S-Rank or Lead Hunter stays with the main body. Not today."
The unit shifted, murmurs of concern rising. Jinchul raised a hand to silence them.
"I have a specific intuition about the core of this Gate. There is a presence inside that reacts to high-density mana. If I stay with the main group, the dungeon may scale its difficulty to match an S-Rank, potentially crushing everyone inside before we can react. I need to move ahead, scouting the 'seams' of the dungeon alone."
"But Chief," Sang-min protested, "let Taeshik & others go in the Dungeon, they will be more than enough to capture it. Why do you need to go in Chief, You are the commander of the association without you the anchor in an unknown Gate is—"
"It is a calculated risk," Jinchul interrupted. "And that is why I've trained you for the 'Steel Phalanx' formation. Listen carefully: if—or when—I am separated from you, your mission changes. You are no longer hunters. You are a wall."
He pointed to a junction on the map. "This corridor is a choke point. If the dungeon 'wakes up,' the statues and armor-monsters will swarm from the inner sanctum. You will lock shields here. Do not pursue me. Do not try to be heroes. Your only job is to hold that line and ensure that the lower-ranked civilian raid team has a clear path for extraction."
Jinchul leaned over the table, his eyes burning with intensity. "The monsters here aren't flesh and blood. They are mechanical, relentless, and they do not feel pain. If you break formation, you die. If you hold the line, we all go home. Chiyul, you are in command of the perimeter. If I don't return to the junction within sixty minutes of the 'awakening,' you lead the retreat and seal the entrance. Do you understand?"
"Understood, Chief," Chiyul replied, his face pale but determined.
"Taeshik, you will hold with Seok who will act as Shield" Jinchul ordered to which they nodded
"Gyu, we may need to be in the frontline for healing. Can you do it?" Jinchul asked the S Rank Healer who was listening to the discussion
"Sure Jinchul, I will be ready but have a small unit inside, I have trained them well to be help to you all" S Rank Healer replied to which Jinchul gave his thanks.
"Then Let's hope for the best" Jinchul ended the discussion
Preparing the Gear
"Good. Check your gear," Jinchul commanded. "We're using the new mana-conductive alloy rounds and the heavy-duty pulse shields. If these armor-monsters are what I think they are, standard physical attacks will just bounce off. You need to aim for the joints—the gaps in the plate."
Jinchul's mind flashed to Jinwoo. He knew the boy was already part of the raid team scheduled to enter that Gate. If the Architect was feeling pressured by the rapid growth of the Wolf Unit, he might try to 'prune' the competition or force Jinwoo into a corner even more brutal than before.
"The reports from the scouts mention 'Armor-type' monsters. Living suits of mail, hollow shells that move with mechanical precision. This isn't a natural dungeon ecology. It's a testing ground."
He stopped in front of a young Hunter who was nervously checking his gauntlets. "Remember your training. Synergy over solo plays. If one of you falls, the next person steps in instantly. No gaps."
As the Wolf Unit began their final equipment checks, Jinchul pulled Sang-min aside. "One last thing. Prioritize the safety of the young hunters alright. Do not at anytime leave them behind. They are the future of Korea"
Sang-min looked confused but nodded solemnly. Jinchul strapped his own customized gauntlets on, the metal clicking into place. He was stepping into the mouth of the beast, and he had just told his team to stay behind while he fought the darkness alone.
"Wolf Unit!" Jinchul shouted, his voice echoing in the hangar. "Move out! We have a date with a monsters."
