Chapter 40 - Chapter 40 — The start of Novel

The concrete landscape of Songpa-gu had been transformed into a fortress of state-mandated silence. The Wolf Unit, the elite wing of the Korean Hunters Association's Monitoring Division, moved with a clinical efficiency that bordered on the supernatural.

They didn't just set up police tape; they erected mana-dampening barriers and portable jammer towers. Every civilian within a three-block radius had been "evacuated" under the guise of a gas leak, leaving the area eerie and hollow, save for the rhythmic humming of the Wolf Unit's equipment.

Woo Jinchul stood at the center of this artificial wasteland, his shadow stretching long against the asphalt. He looked less like a bureaucrat and more like a reaper in a tailored suit. Beside him, Song Chiyul was checking the straps on his forearm guards.

The old master's presence was a steadying force, but even he could feel the unnatural pressure radiating from the construction site's elevator shaft.

"The perimeter is fully secured, Jinchul," Chiyul remarked, his voice raspy. "The Wolf Unit has the 'eyes' and 'ears' of the media blinded. But you know as well as I do that we can't keep a secret this big for long. If the mana-spike down there breaks the threshold as you have told, the S-Rank sensors at the Association headquarters will start screaming."

Jinchul didn't answer immediately. He adjusted his glasses, his eyes scanning the digital readout on his tablet. "That's why we're here. We aren't raiding this place. We're containing it."

The Call to the Chairman

Jinchul stepped away from the main group, retreating into the shadow of a command humvee. He pulled out his encrypted satellite phone and dialed a single-digit speed dial. The line picked up on the first ring.

"Report," the voice on the other end was deep, gravelly, and commanded the respect of every Hunter in the nation. Chairman Go Gunhee.

"Chairman," Jinchul began, his tone formal despite the urgency. "We have successfully secured the Songpa-gu site. The Wolf Unit has established a three-layer perimeter. No external Guilds have detected the anomaly yet, but the energy signature is... evolving. It's not like any Gate we've recorded."

There was a long silence on the other end. "And the raid team?" Gunhee asked.

"They've not yet descended. We have ordered to stop and takeover," Jinchul replied, his jaw tightening. "Song Chiyul and I are preparing to follow. If we move in force, we risk triggering a dungeon collapse or an early 'reawakening' of whatever is sleeping down there. I'm taking a minimal footprint. Chiyul will provide the combat support. I will be acting as the backup."

"Jinchul," Gunhee's voice softened slightly, a rare moment of personal concern. "You are the future of association. If you feel that this is a trap, pull back. We can level the entire district if we have to."

"With all due respect, Chairman, leveling the district won't stop what's coming," Jinchul said firmly. "My intuition tells me that this dungeon is different. It's a testing ground. If I don't go in now, we lose the chance to see what is happening."

"Very well," Gunhee sighed. "You have my full authorization. Use any means necessary to secure the target, use Eclipsis if required. And Jinchul... don't die. The Association can't afford to lose its most capable hunter to a hole in the ground."

A Voice in the Dark: The Call to Jinhee

After hanging up with Gunhee, Jinchul hesitated. His thumb hovered over another contact. This wasn't an official report. This was the part of his life he kept shielded from the cold, clinical world of the Association. He pressed the button.

"Jinchul?" Yoo Jinhee's voice came through instantly. She sounded breathless, likely in the middle of her own preparations. "I'm at the secondary rally point. Why aren't you answering your radio?"

"I'm on a secure line, Jinhee," he said, his voice dropping an octave, losing the edge of the Association Inspector. "Listen to me carefully. The Wolf Unit is holding the line, but I need you to stay at the secondary perimeter. Do not—under any circumstances—come to the primary shaft unless I give the code 'Eclipsis'."

"What? No!" Jinhee's voice flared with sudden anger. "Jinchul, we talked about this. Chiyul is one thing, but you're going into this Dungeon scenario. That means something is wrong, we need need an S-Rank backup, and I want to know why you want me to come here, I can do readings but that is all. We worked on the Eclipsis, You and President are the only people who can access it. Now you are telling me to handle that. "

"That's exactly why you have to stay there," Jinchul countered. "If things go wrong, I need someone on the outside who knows the truth. Someone who can protect the survivors—or bury the evidence. You cannot even be here, if you can move to third point. There are association teams who are checking the readings."

"You're talking like you don't expect to come back," she whispered. "Is the thing, you spoke to me like something about Dungeon changing accordingly to our strength true?"

"No," Jinchul lied, though he could feel the phantom itch of the 'Player' interface in the back of his mind. "I just need to know you're safe. Jinhee. If I know you're holding the perimeter, I can focus. Promise me."

There was a long pause. He could almost see her biting her lip, her hand white-knuckled around her phone. "Fine. I'll hold the perimeter, but you know it will not be enough, I am not part of association, but a corporation. So Jinchul... if that timer hits zero and you aren't at the surface, I'm coming down there with enough mana-bombs to turn that dungeon into a crater. Lover or not, I won't let you be a martyr."

"I expect nothing less," Jinchul said with a faint, tired smile. "I love you."

The Descent

Jinchul tucked the phone away and walked back to Song Chiyul. The older man was watching him with a knowing look. He didn't ask about the calls; he didn't need to. He knew the burden Jinchul carried.

"The Wolf Unit is ready, Inspector," a lieutenant reported, saluting. "Perimeter is absolute. All signals are jammed. The public believes this is a high-level hazardous material cleanup."

"Good," Jinchul said. He turned to Chiyul. "Let's go, Chiyul. You will be at front"

Chiyul nodded, his hand resting on the hilt of his blade. "I haven't fought a 'Armor types' in a long time, Jinchul. I hope your intel is as good as you say it is."

"It's not intel, Chiyul," Jinchul said, stepping onto the elevator platform. "It's the truth"

The hum of the dungoen filled the air as they started to go near to it, agonizing descent into the darkness. Above them, the lights of Seoul continued to flicker, the millions of inhabitants completely unaware that the man who held their world together was descending into a nightmare to save it.

As the sunlight vanished, replaced by the damp, cold air of the subterranean depths, Jinchul felt the shift in mana. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of ancient stone and blood.

The "raid" wasn't a raid—it was a rendezvous with destiny. And as the environment started to change, Jinchul at the back of the team, his eyes glowing with a faint, orange light that mirrored the lights in that hall.

The perimeter was secured. The calls were made. Now, there was only the dark.
