Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Between Truth and Lies

The next morning, Hana felt like the weight of the world was pressing down on her chest.

Every glance in the hallway, every whisper behind a hand, felt magnified. The auditorium video was no longer just a rumor—it was a threat hovering over her, and she could sense how quickly it could spiral out of control.

She met Min-jae at their usual spot near the lockers. He looked calm, as always, but Hana knew better. She could see the tension in his shoulders, the tight line of his jaw, the way his fingers drummed lightly against the metal locker.

"They'll question us today," she whispered.

"I know," he said softly. "Just… stay with me through it, okay?"

She nodded. "Always."

The principal's office was cold and intimidating. Hana and Min-jae were called in separately, one after the other.

Hana sat in the chair, hands folded in her lap, eyes lowered. Every question felt like a minefield.

"Tell me exactly what happened behind the auditorium," the principal said.

Hana swallowed. "We… we were talking. I didn't mean for anything to happen. He—"

"Stop," the principal interrupted. "Be concise. The video exists. We've seen it. We want the truth, not excuses."

Hana's hands trembled. "We were… about to kiss. That's it. Nothing more."

The principal's gaze softened slightly, but remained firm. "Do you understand the impact of your actions? The potential consequences?"

"Yes," she whispered.

When Min-jae entered after her, he gave her a small nod through the glass window.

"I told them everything," he said later, outside the office. "Every detail. Nothing hidden."

Hana's breath hitched. "You… you didn't have to do that. It could get you in trouble too."

"I don't care," he said. "I couldn't let you take the fall alone."

Her throat tightened, and she looked away. For a moment, she felt tears prick her eyes—but she didn't let them fall. Not here. Not now.

The day dragged on painfully. Rumors swirled, students stared, teachers whispered.

Hana felt cornered, exposed. But every time she looked at Min-jae, she saw determination, protection, and unwavering trust.

By the end of the day, the principal called her to the office again.

"You've been very honest," he said. "And while the situation is serious, we understand it was a personal moment. There will be no suspension, but you must refrain from actions that could compromise your reputation. Is that clear?"

"Yes, sir," Hana replied, relieved and trembling all at once.

As she left the office, she saw Min-jae waiting outside. His expression softened immediately.

"You okay?" he asked.

She nodded, the weight of fear lifting slightly. "I… think so."

He smiled faintly. "Good. Come on. Let's get out of here for a bit. Just us."

Hana's heart swelled. She knew it wasn't over—people would still talk, and Yuri wasn't done—but at this moment, she felt safe.

They walked toward the quiet part of the park, side by side. Hana's hand brushed his. Neither pulled away.

"Min-jae…" she started, her voice trembling slightly. "Thank you. For everything."

He squeezed her hand gently. "I promised I'd never leave you alone. And I won't."

For a long moment, they walked in silence, letting the calm wash over them. The sun dipped lower, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold.

Hana felt her heart open, soft and warm, realizing that even in the chaos, even when the world felt against them, she wasn't alone anymore.

Then, a familiar shadow emerged from the trees—a figure she had hoped she wouldn't see again so soon.

Yuri.

And her smile wasn't soft this time. It was cold.
