Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 – Road Under Watchful Eyes

The gates of Konoha opened slowly, creaking softly, as if the village itself didn't want to draw attention to the departure. The sun was still relatively low in the sky, casting a gentle light over the dirt road that stretched beyond the walls, winding between trees and distant hills. It wasn't a grand mission, nor did it involve any known great dangers, but even so, there was a different kind of weight in the air. Ren noticed it the moment he took his first step outside the village.

It wasn't anxiety. Not exactly. It was more like a subtle shift in how the world seemed to organize itself around him. Inside Konoha, everything had a familiar rhythm: known sounds, recognizable faces, the constant feeling that if something went wrong, help would arrive quickly. Out here, the road felt wider, the silence deeper, and every sound carried a meaning that couldn't be ignored.

Asuma walked a few steps ahead, hands in his pockets, posture far too relaxed for someone leading a mission. The merchant, a middle-aged man with simple clothes and a constantly tense expression, followed right behind him, gripping tightly the reins of the small cart that carried his goods. Ren, Ino, and Shikamaru spread out around them, forming a natural, almost instinctive protective formation.

"First mission outside the village," Ino commented quietly, looking around with interest. "I don't know if I'm excited or worried."

"Both are correct answers," Shikamaru muttered, yawning lightly but keeping his eyes alert. "When everything's too calm, it's because the problem hasn't shown up yet."

Ren said nothing. He just observed.

The road was surrounded by tall trees, their canopies intertwining irregularly, creating patches of shadow where the light barely touched the ground. The wind passed through the branches, producing a constant sound, almost like a collective whisper. To someone careless, it would just be scenery. To Ren, it was information.

He paid too much attention to the details: the way some birds suddenly took flight, the way certain insects simply vanished as they got closer to the road, the sudden silence in some stretches, as if the forest itself was holding its breath.

"Asuma-sensei," Ren said, breaking the silence. "Do you feel it too?"

Asuma glanced back over his shoulder, a lazy half-smile on his lips. "If you're asking, then there's something there. So yeah, I feel it."

Ino frowned. "Feel what, exactly?"

Ren took a few seconds before answering, as if trying to turn a sensation into words.

"That we're being… watched. Not up close. But not too far either."

Shikamaru sighed. "Great. Our first mission outside the village and we already have trouble."

Asuma chuckled softly. "Being alert is literally your job. If it were easy, it wouldn't be a C-rank mission."

The merchant swallowed hard when he heard that. "W-watched? Do you think there are bandits around here?"

"Maybe," Asuma replied, without dramatizing it. "Or maybe not. But it's always good to be prepared for the worst."

The group kept moving, maintaining their pace. Ren began to shift positions almost automatically, sometimes moving a little ahead, sometimes falling back, testing angles, lines of sight, possible ambush points. It wasn't something he did consciously — his body simply moved in search of balance.

Ino noticed after a while. "You can't stay still, can you?" she commented with a half-smile. "Nervous?"

Ren shook his head. "No. Just… adjusting."

"Adjusting what?"

"The space," he replied. "If someone attacks, I want to be in the right place to react."

Ino stayed silent for a moment, watching him from the corner of her eye. "You say that like it's the most normal thing in the world."

Shikamaru murmured, "For him, it probably is."

The road began to narrow as they advanced, and the vegetation grew denser. Shadows piled up, and the temperature seemed to drop slightly, even with the sun still overhead. Ren felt a subtle shiver run down his spine — not from cold, but from intuition.

He stopped for a second. "Something's wrong," he said.

Asuma immediately raised his hand, signaling the group to stop.

"What did you notice?" Asuma asked, his posture now a little firmer.

Ren closed his eyes for a moment, as if trying to align his own senses.

"The sound changed," he replied. "I can't explain it exactly, but something feels off."

Shikamaru raised an eyebrow. "Off how?"

Ren shrugged. "It's too quiet."

Asuma narrowed his eyes, observing the forest. "There aren't any animals."

Ino swallowed. "That's bad, right?"

"It is," Asuma said. "Someone's trying not to be noticed."

Ino instinctively moved her hand to the kunai strapped to her leg. "So it's an ambush?"

"Or scouting," Asuma replied. "Either way, now we know we're not alone."

They resumed walking, but differently now. Their steps became lighter, more calculated. Asuma moved less casually, keeping more distance from the cart. Ino and Shikamaru shifted slightly away from the merchant, forming a wider protective triangle.

Ren felt chakra moving inside his body without him needing to force it. It was as if his mind had entered a specific state: everything around him was a potential threat, but also potential information. Every broken branch, every irregular shadow, every minimal change in the environment was registered.

They walked like that for several minutes, and nothing happened.

And strangely enough, that only increased the tension.

"I hate this part," Ino muttered. "When you feel something's going to happen, but you don't know how or when."

"This is the part that gets inexperienced ninjas killed the most," Asuma replied. "Because relaxing now is exactly what the enemy wants."

Ren felt it clearly. The feeling of being watched hadn't disappeared. On the contrary, it felt more focused, closer, as if someone were finally adjusting the distance.

Then, without warning, he stopped again. "Now it changed."

"What do you mean?" Shikamaru asked.

"Before, it felt like someone was far away," Ren explained. "Now… it's closer."

The silence that followed was heavy.

Asuma took two steps forward, eyes scanning the forest. "Show yourselves," he said out loud.

For a few seconds, nothing happened. Then a branch moved to the left of the road. Then another, to the right.

Three figures slowly emerged from between the trees, unhurried, as if they had no reason to hide anymore. They wore headbands from different villages, all slashed with deep cuts. Their clothes were worn, stained with dust and dried blood. Their gazes, however, were cold, sharp, far too experienced for simple bandits.

Rogue ninjas.

Ino felt her heart race. "There are… three."

Shikamaru swallowed. "And they don't look weak."

Ren couldn't take his eyes off them. Not out of fear, but recognition. The way they moved, the way they analyzed the group, the automatic positioning they took in relation to the road — everything suggested this wasn't a random encounter.

They had been waiting.

The one in the middle, a tall man with scars across his face, gave a crooked smile. "Our lucky day," he said. "A small escort… with just one jōnin and three brats."

Asuma lit a cigarette slowly, as if the situation were nothing special. "You picked the wrong road to play on."

The rogue's smile widened. "Or maybe it's you who took the wrong path."

Ren felt the chakra inside his body react, organizing itself before he even made a conscious decision. For the first time since leaving Konoha, it was no longer just a feeling.

It was certainty.

The escort mission was over.

And something far more dangerous was about to begin.
