Chapter 226 - Chapter 224: One Take Legend

Rain slammed down like a waterfall. The cold water hit Cassius hard, but it snapped him straight into character.

He crouched low and moved through the ruined alien city like a thief who belonged there. The custom helmet from Propshop sat heavy on his head—three pounds of fiberglass and resin with sliding visor lenses. The Walkman hung from his belt like it had always been there.

He pulled out the scanner, fumbled it open in the wind and rain exactly like a guy who'd done this a hundred times. The crew watching from the edges smiled. This was Peter Quill. A walking junkyard of retro tech and bad decisions.

Gunn called the cut on the long handheld shot. "That was excellent."

They reset for the next setup. No rest. Straight into the dance.

"Action!"

Cassius hit play. The music flooded the soundstage and his headphones at the same time. His body moved before his brain caught up—head bobbing, shoulders rolling, that loose 80s disco sway that felt like it came from muscle memory instead of choreography.

He kicked through puddles, spun, pointed finger-guns at invisible fans, and laughed at his own moves. It wasn't polished. It was cocky, lonely, and stupidly joyful.

A crew member accidentally threw the prop "monster bag" straight at his face.

Everyone froze. One mistake and the entire shot was ruined.

Cassius didn't miss a beat. In character, he snatched the bag out of the air, held it like a microphone, and belted the chorus like it was the greatest thing he'd ever heard.

Gunn never called cut. He just watched with wide eyes.

When the music peaked and Cassius struck the final pose, the director yelled, "Cut!"

The soundstage exploded.

Gunn jumped out of his chair and punched the air. "One take! First shot of the movie—fucking one take!"

The crew roared. The guy who threw the bag looked like he was about to cry with relief. Cassius just grinned and wiped rain off his face.

Dave pushed through the crowd, grinning like an idiot. "Bro, that was nastier than a WWE entrance! Teach me that spin next time!"

Zoe stood off to the side, arms crossed, but her eyes were wide. She gave Cassius a small nod.

He walked to the monitors and watched the playback. Even he had to admit it looked perfect. The lonely thief dancing in the rain felt real.

Lens Charisma +10. Role Immersion +15. Trendsetter +5.

A shower of golden orbs dropped. Cassius absorbed them all.

The day rolled on smoother than anyone expected. Cassius's professionalism was obvious—never complained, never asked for special treatment, and kept offering to reshoot if something felt off.

Then came Rocket.

The 1:1 mechanical raccoon puppet was impressive as hell, but it had lag. Blinks were half a second late. Teeth-baring looked mechanical. Cassius kept waiting for reactions that never came fast enough.

After eight bad takes, Gunn called cut. "You're fine, Cass, but there's no spark. It feels like you're acting with an expensive toy instead of a smart-ass raccoon."

Cassius wiped sweat and looked at the three puppeteers. "Guys, relax. We're not defusing a bomb. Let's try something different. Don't wait for perfect timing. Just react to me when it feels right—even if it's early or late or bigger. Treat him like the world's most annoying pet. Let's find the banter."

The lead puppeteer glanced at Gunn, who nodded. "Do it."

They rolled again.

Cassius stopped waiting. He talked to the puppet like it was a real pain in the ass. When he called it a "furry little thief," the raccoon suddenly whipped its head and bared its teeth hard.

"That's it!" Cassius pointed. "Look at him! He's giving me attitude!"

The energy shifted. The puppet felt alive. Cassius's performance loosened up. The puppeteers started having fun with it.

Interaction with Special Performance Objects +8. On-Set Coordination +5.

Gunn smiled at the monitors. "That's the one. Keep it."

The puppeteers looked relieved. Cassius had turned a nightmare into something workable.

Zoe's daily torture was the green silicone skin. Four to five hours in makeup every morning, another hour to remove it at night. During fight scenes the sweat trapped underneath made the edges peel, so they had to stop and touch up constantly.

She never complained. Never asked for a break. She just sat there, half-asleep during touch-ups, then snapped right back into Gamora's sharp, dangerous energy.

Actor Dedication +10. Special Effects Makeup Adaptation +12.

The fight scene on the Dark Aster went sideways fast. Dave, fully suited as Drax, got too into the push and tripped over a prop crate. His massive body went flying straight toward Zoe, who had just finished a makeup touch-up.

Cassius was standing ten feet away watching the blocking. The second he saw Dave lose balance, his body moved on instinct. One arm shot out to block Dave's shoulder, the other grabbed Zoe and pulled her back a step.

Dave caught himself. Zoe stayed on her feet.

"Jesus, sorry! Sorry!" Dave blurted. "You okay, Zoe? I almost turned into an actual Destroyer."

Zoe steadied herself and looked at Cassius's hand still on her arm. "I'm fine."

She met his eyes and gave a small nod. "Thanks."

Zoe's favorability +2 (now 62).

Dave looked mortified. Cassius laughed. "Next time check your feet before you get mad, big guy. This ship's expensive."

Gunn clapped his hands. "Actually, that reaction was perfect. Cass, that instinctive 'protect the team' move? That's pure Star-Lord. Let's build a couple of those little instincts into the rest of the scene."

They adjusted the choreography on the fly. The fight gained real tension and an unspoken layer of loyalty. Dave controlled his power better. Zoe moved sharper.

Team Cohesion +3.

By the end of the day Cassius was exhausted but wired. Two more orbs dropped quietly:

Crisis Prediction & On-Set Reaction +10. Team Cohesion +3.

He walked back to his place, towel around his neck, smiling at the system panel.

One take on the first shot. A legendary dance. A raccoon that finally felt alive. And he'd already made two co-stars feel safer on set.

This was going to be a hell of a movie.
