Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Halls

The next morning, Rowan walked the halls of Ravenswood with a growing sense of unease. The air was colder than the day before, or maybe it was just the way the academy seemed to press against him, watching, waiting.

Lyra and Vivienne walked beside him, but he noticed how careful Lyra was with every step, every glance. Vivienne, in contrast, gave him gentle reassurances, her hand brushing his shoulder once as they turned a corner.

"See that boy over there?" Lyra whispered, nodding subtly toward the end of the hallway.

Rowan followed her gaze. A tall, slender student with dark hair and sharp eyes leaned against the lockers, half-hidden in the shadows. His posture was casual, but there was something deliberate in the way he watched the others.

"Who is he?" Rowan asked.

"Cassius Rowe," Lyra said softly. "He doesn't usually make himself known, but people notice him. And people fear him… without knowing why."

Vivienne's voice was quiet. "He doesn't trust anyone. Not even his friends."

Rowan studied Cassius. There was an intensity in the way he scanned the hall, a quiet calculation in every movement. Something about him felt… off.

Lyra leaned closer. "Watch him. Don't make direct contact. He's unpredictable."

Rowan's brow furrowed. "Why is everyone so… on edge around him?"

Lyra shrugged. "He keeps secrets. So does the school. Pay attention to both."

Across the hall, Orion appeared, slipping effortlessly past students without a word. His eyes flicked toward Rowan and Lyra, then quickly away. The subtle weight of his gaze lingered in Rowan's chest. He made a note to watch Orion, too—something about him didn't fit the calm mask he wore.

Cassius moved then, stepping into the open, brushing past students as if he didn't care who noticed. He stopped near a classroom, glanced back once, and then walked down the hallway. His presence left a trace, a small ripple of tension in the air.

"That's your first encounter," Lyra whispered. "Nothing happened, but it matters. Watch how he moves, who notices him, how the others react. It tells you everything you need to know… and hides the rest."

Rowan nodded slowly. Observation was always his strength. But Cassius… there was something different here. A weight that didn't belong.

Vivienne's soft voice broke his thoughts. "Don't let him scare you," she said, brushing his hand lightly again. "You'll see he's more complicated than people think."

Rowan turned to look at her, then back at Cassius. The boy's eyes met his briefly, sharp and calculating, before Cassius disappeared around the corner. A chill ran down Rowan's spine.

Later that day, in the library, Lyra leaned over Rowan's shoulder as he flipped through old student records.

"Notice the pattern," she said quietly. "Cassius Rowe is connected, indirectly, to almost every student who's been disciplined quietly, or removed without explanation. People avoid talking about him, but he's everywhere in the shadows."

Rowan frowned. "You mean… he could be—"

"Dangerous?" Lyra asked softly. "Possibly. But not the way you think."

Rowan's attention flicked to the window, where Orion was standing outside, staring across the grounds as if seeing something no one else could. Rowan shivered. Something about Ravenswood Academy made him question everything—every person, every glance, every shadow.

Even the students who seemed harmless weren't what they appeared to be.

And in the middle of it all, Cassius Rowe was already making his mark.

Rowan didn't know yet whether the boy was a threat—or a clue.

But instinct whispered that he mattered, more than anyone would dare admit.
