Chapter 15 - Doppelganger

**Year 981, 5th era**

Eldoria Kingdom, Elenost city

.....

11:00 am in the morning. The city in the elve Kingdom is busy. Caravans drove on the stone paved roads. The mixed aroma of different types of food filled the air. The nearby stalls crowded with customers as they bought their day - to - day necessities. Band of musicians played their instruments near the water fountain in the middle of the town square. Childrens danced along with the rhythm of the music. The city is peaceful and lively. The citizens lively chatted.

"Grilled meat. You get one free bite before buying."

"Twenty percent discount for the vegetables. Come buy before they are sold out."

"Yeah this are fresh fruits. They just came in today."

"Father let's us buy the grilled meat."

"It is so lively." A knight near the city gates said.

"Yeah. It is all because of the Queen." A knight beside him replied.

"Building a city from scratch within ten years, what a miracle."

A bell on top of the city walls rang signaling the entrance of queen

"The Royal families are here! Open the gates." A knight on top of the city wall ordered.

The massive gates were opened. A long queue of decorated chariots drawn by horses stepped into the city.

"The Queen is here." a citizen mentioned. The rest that heard him spread the murmur. All those that were busy left their work station and gathered beside the road, knelt down, bowed their heads and welcomed their ruler.

"Long live your majesty!" The chanted in unison.

The chariots followed the trail heading towards the building in the middle of the city.

The murmurs continued as soon as they left.

"I heard from rumors that one of the princes will be appointed as a Duke of this city."

"No. They will appoint one of the noble from the west. They have served them for a long time."

"Who cares. Let's just enjoy this moment."

"Yeah. Let's enjoy it to the fullest."

.....

**Grand Ducal Palace**

The chariots entered the palace. It was well decorated. Green short grass, cherry blossom trees, a pool, flower hedges and a central triumphal arc that led to the main courtyard. Footmen on formal livery stood like statues along the gravel path, their armors gleaming under the sun.

The heavy wheels of the carriages came to a halt. A butler opened the door and a figure stepped out. She wore a gown encrusted with constellation of seed pearls and hand stitched diamonds. A heavy train of deep violet velvet dragged along.

Mary Greywoods, the elve queen.

"Welcome your majesty." the butter slightly bowed, welcoming her. After her, her children jumped out of the chariot.

The rest of the nobles got out of their carriages heading to the palace.

....

As she entered, a maid approached her.

"What can I get you, your majesty?"

"Show me my room, I need to take a shower first."

"Yes your majesty." the maid said as she led the way.

....

"I've prepared everything your majesty."

"Okay, you may leave."

The maid bowed and headed out.

"Maria, tell the first prince to come." she said as she entered the bathroom.

Thirty minutes later.

Reagan was seated on the couch as she watched the maids dress her mother.

"What did you want to talk about, mother?"

"Did you think about it?"

She noticed him hesitating.

"Still worried about your brother?"

"No. I'm just not ready to be a Duke yet."

"You are already married. Don't you think your mistress need a title?"

"But..."

"No buts. I know it's about your brother. Don't worry I'll take care of it."

....

The party in the palace was already going on. The nobles chatted with each other for friendly matters and some discussing about business. Laura and Telvin stood near the window holding a glass of wine.

"Are you okay." Laura asked her brother.

"Am fine. Why do you ask?" he asked as he sipped down his wine.

"You created a fuss when mother appointed big brother as a Duke. Are you sure..."

"Am okay. Really."

"Okay. Just wanted to know."

Their banter was interrupted by the entrance of the Queen. Reagan led her down the stairs. The room went silent as they stared.

"They are staring too much." Reagan whispered.

"Get used to it." her mother whispered back

As they got down from the stairs, Reagan handed her mother to a butler. He took a wine from a waiter and headed towards his siblings as the room went back to its lively chatter.

Suddenly, the bright light outside, began to fade. They all shifted their direction wondering what's going on. Outside, a crimson circular rift had formed in the sky blocking the sunlight.

"What's that?"

Before they could ponder what it was, creatures came out of the rift. Wyverns, drakes, and dragons flooded out of the rift. A total of a hundred creatures. They unleashed their breath attacks without a warning annihilating everything on their path. The joyful laughs were replaced by wails of terror and sorrow.

**Two weeks later**

Silvermoon City, Council Room.

Eight people sat around a semicircle table. They are the leaders of the elve kingdom. The queen sat in the middle.

"Did the humans send reinforcements?" the queen questioned.

"No. They said until we pay them the money they want, they won't help." a man replied.

"They know that we spent most of our finances building Elenost, why are they demanding so much?" a lady asked frustrated with their current situation.

"They have always eyed for our properties. They are using this chance for a negotiation." another one answered.

"What about the North?" the queen asked.

"They already sent reinforcements but by the time they reach here, it will be too late. We can only depend on him."

**Elenost City(Destroyed)**

The current condition of this place was horrible. One couldn't believe that a city stood here a fortnight ago.

Bodies were scattered around. The knights that were sent to fight the monsters, lay besides the almost rotten monsters. In the middle of the battlefield, sounds of swords clanging echoed.

Reagan wearing an armor, was fending of the dragon, Red Dragon Dracena.

Thud.

Dracena pinned him on the ground as her claws dug into his armor.

"Why do you keep fighting, human? You know you can't defeat me." she asked as she leaned.

"Because you promised me you won't kill the survivors if I lasted half a month."

"Look at yourself. How do you expect to fight me with one hand?" she asked as she removed her claws.

"As long as I am alive, I can fight you." he said as he struggled to stand up.

"I only need to survive for six hours." he said as he charged forward with his almost destroyed sword.

The next day, when the reinforcements reached the battlefield, the battle was already over. The news of the death of the first prince and the disappearance of the dragon spread like wild fire.
