The world did not fade out.
It collapsed.
One moment, Kai was standing in the fog-filled space where the Woman in Gray had vanished.
The next, the ground beneath his feet shattered like glass.
He fell.
Wind screamed past his ears as darkness swallowed him whole. His body felt weightless, yet unbearably heavy at the same time—like his soul was being dragged while his flesh lagged behind.
Then—
THUD
Kai slammed into solid ground, rolling across rough stone. Pain exploded through his shoulder and ribs. He gasped, coughing as dust filled his lungs.
Before he could even stand, a cold, emotionless voice echoed through the air.
[Trial Initiated.]
[Trial Name: The First Trial – Survival Instinct.]
[Objective: Survive for 30 minutes.]
[Failure Condition: Death.]
Kai froze.
"…Trial?" he whispered.
The environment around him fully revealed itself.
He was inside a massive circular arena carved from black stone. Towering walls stretched upward, disappearing into darkness. Dim crimson lights glowed from cracks in the walls, pulsing like a living heartbeat.
There was no exit.
No sky.
Only stone… and silence.
Then the silence broke.
A low growl echoed from the shadows.
Kai's heart slammed against his chest.
From the far side of the arena, red eyes flickered open—one pair… then another… then dozens.
Something moved.
Heavy footsteps scraped against stone.
[Warning.]
[Hostile entities detected.]
Kai clenched his fists.
"I don't even have a weapon," he muttered, panic creeping into his voice. "Is this a joke?"
The growls grew louder.
Figures emerged from the darkness.
The Figures were Large wolf-like creatures made of condensed black mist. Their bodies lack solid flesh, with jagged, semi-transparent forms. Glowing red eyes burn with hostility, and shadowy claws leave dark trails in the air when they move.
Three Shadow Hounds stepped into the dim light.
Saliva-like black mist dripped from their jaws as they circled him slowly.
Kai took a shaky step back.
"Thirty minutes…" he whispered. "I just have to survive."
The hounds lunged.
Kai reacted purely on instinct.
He dove sideways, barely avoiding snapping jaws where his head had been a second earlier. The stone exploded as claws struck the ground.
Pain shot through his palm as he scraped it against the floor, but he didn't stop.
He ran.
The arena was wide, but not endless. No matter where he turned, another hound cut him off, herding him like prey.
His breathing turned ragged.
"I can't outrun them forever!"
One hound leaped.
Kai raised his arms reflexively—
And something clicked inside him.
[Skill Triggered.]
[Passive Skill: Danger Sense – Activated.]
The world slowed.
The hound's movement became clear—its trajectory, its timing, the exact moment its claws would tear into him.
Kai twisted at the last second.
The hound crashed past him, slamming into the wall. Black mist splattered like liquid shadow.
Kai stared at his hands.
"…That was the skill," he realized.
There was no time to think.
The other two attacked together.
Kai moved again—faster this time. Not stronger. Not smarter.
Just… sharper.
He ducked under one swipe, grabbed a loose shard of broken stone from the ground, and slammed it into the hound's glowing eye.
The creature howled as its form destabilized, dissolving into smoke.
[Shadow Hound defeated.]
Kai didn't celebrate.
The remaining hound tackled him, pinning him to the ground. Its claws pressed down on his chest, burning cold.
He screamed, struggling as the creature opened its jaws.
Then—
A faint gray light flickered in his vision.
Not in the arena.
In his mind.
The calm voice of the Woman in Gray echoed softly.
"Fear dulls instinct. Accept it, and move."
Kai stopped fighting blindly.
He focused.
On his breath.
On the pressure.
On the moment.
He shifted his weight and slammed his knee upward.
The hound reeled back.
Kai rolled, grabbed the same stone shard, and plunged it forward with everything he had.
The hound dissolved into smoke.
Silence returned.
Kai collapsed onto his back, chest heaving, sweat soaking through his clothes.
"…I'm alive," he whispered.
A countdown appeared before his eyes.
[Time Remaining: 18:47]
His relief vanished instantly.
From the shadows, more red eyes ignited.
Not three.
Not ten.
Dozens.
Kai slowly forced himself to stand.
His legs trembled. His body ached. His mind screamed to give up.
But somewhere deep inside—
Something refused.
He clenched his fists.
"If this is the system's way of testing me," he said hoarsely, "then fine."
A faint, sharp glint appeared in his eyes.
"I'll survive."
The growls rose.
And the trial continued.
