Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Breaking the Limit

I don't know when fear stopped controlling me.

Only that at some point, it stopped mattering.

My lungs burn every time I breathe. My arms feel heavier than stone. The arena floor is stained with fading black mist—proof that I've already killed more than I can count.

The countdown floats in front of my eyes.

[Time Remaining: 04:12]

Four minutes.

Four minutes in hell.

The growls never stop. Even when I can't see them, I can feel them—circling, waiting, learning.

They're getting smarter.

One lunges from my blind spot.

I twist just in time, claws slicing air where my throat was supposed to be. Pain still rips across my shoulder.

I bite back a scream.

If I slow down, I die.

If I hesitate, I die.

Simple.

My vision blurs at the edges. Not from injury—

From exhaustion.

[Warning: Physical condition critical.]

[Muscle strain detected.]

[Heart rate exceeding safe threshold.]

"So what?" I whisper.

The system doesn't answer.

Another Shadow Hound charges.

I meet it head-on.

I duck low, slam my shoulder into its chest, and feel something inside my body tear. White-hot pain explodes down my side, but the hound stumbles.

I don't waste the opening.

Stone shard. One strike. The red eye shatters.

The hound dissolves.

I drop to one knee.

My hands are shaking now.

"…Move," I tell myself. "Get up."

They don't listen.

My body has reached its limit.

The arena darkens.

For the first time since the trial started, doubt crawls into my chest.

So this is it?

After everything… this is where I fall?

A distant growl answers me.

I lift my head.

They're not rushing anymore.

They're watching.

Waiting for my body to fail completely.

That's when I feel it.

Not pain.

Not fear.

Something else.

A pressure deep inside my chest—tight, compressed, like something has been locked away for far too long.

My heartbeat grows louder.

Each pulse echoes in my skull.

[Danger Sense: Overload.]

The world sharpens.

Every crack in the stone.

Every shift of shadow.

Every hostile intent aimed at me.

I see it all.

Too much.

My head screams.

[Error.]

[Host condition incompatible with current stress level.]

I laugh.

A dry, broken sound.

"Incompatible?" I whisper. "Then change it."

Something snaps.

Not in my body.

In my limit.

[Critical Condition Met.]

[Hidden Threshold Detected.]

[Evolution Opportunity Available.]

My breath catches.

"What…?"

The pressure inside me explodes outward.

Pain rips through every nerve like lightning, but I don't fall.

I stand.

[Passive Skill 'Danger Sense' is evolving.]

[Evolution in progress…]

The Shadow Hounds howl.

They feel it too.

Power surges through my limbs—not strength, not speed—but clarity. My mind becomes terrifyingly calm.

[New Skill Acquired.]

[Predatory Awareness – Rank: F]

Description: Host perceives hostile intent, attack vectors, and survival probabilities in real time.]

The arena feels smaller.

Slower.

The hounds move.

I move first.

I don't dodge anymore—I step into their attacks, slipping through gaps I didn't know existed, striking joints, eyes, cores.

One after another, they dissolve.

No wasted movement.

No hesitation.

No fear.

[Time Remaining: 00:32]

The last hound retreats.

It doesn't attack.

It bows its head slightly.

I freeze.

"…What?"

The creature's form twists, shadow condensing instead of dispersing.

The system's voice returns—lower than before.

[Trial condition altered.]

[Hidden Boss Detected.]

The shadows merge.

Grow.

Rise.

Something steps forward—taller, denser, far more aware than the others.

Red eyes lock onto mine.

And for the first time since this nightmare began—

I smile.

[Time Remaining: 00:05]

"Good," I whisper.

"Let's see what breaking the limit really means."
