Chapter 36 - CHAPTER 36: THE FIRST SIGN

The realization did not stay outside. Iris carried it back into the cave with her.

The cave swallowed her the moment she stepped in, the dim light from outside stretching behind her before fading into a dull, lifeless glow across the stone walls. The air inside felt thicker than before, damp and unmoving, laced with the lingering scent of ash and something older that refused to leave.

The group reacted immediately, not with panic, but with awareness sharpened by exhaustion.

Marcus shifted first, subtle but deliberate, his posture tightening as his attention locked onto Iris. Victor straightened where he stood, suppressing the strain in his arm with practiced control. Jin Tejin didn't move much, but his eyes lifted, alert and precise.

The others followed.

Benjamin looked up, already reading the situation before a word was spoken.

Henry adjusted his grip on his walking stick, the faint movement controlled, almost habitual.

Caleb stilled mid-motion, his expression tightening as he searched Iris's face for answers.

Claire glanced up—

Then, almost instinctively, her attention flicked toward Daniel.

It lingered for a moment before returning.

Snow slipped in behind Iris without a sound, brushing lightly against her leg before settling at her side. The black dog remained low beside Elias, unmoving but watchful, as though it had already sensed the shift in the air before anyone else.

Iris didn't hesitate. "There's smoke," she said.

Her voice was calm, but it carried.

The words settled into the cave, quiet but heavy enough that no one missed what they meant.

A brief silence followed.

Then she added, more deliberately, "Not random. Controlled."

The effect was immediate.

Caleb leaned forward slightly, his brows pulling together as something close to hope surfaced in his voice. "People…?" It sounded fragile. Like something he wasn't sure he was allowed to believe in yet.

Henry didn't share that hesitation. His gaze hardened instead, narrowing slightly as he processed the implication. "Or something that wants to be seen." he said quietly.

The possibility hung there.

Uncomfortable.

Real.

Elias exhaled slowly, the sound rough against the still air, while beside him, the black dog's ears twitched once before settling again.

Snow pressed closer to Iris, still and grounded, its presence steady in a way that felt intentional.

Benjamin spoke next, his tone measured. "How far?"

"It's far," Iris replied. "But visible."

That was enough. They had direction now. And in a place like this—

Direction meant everything.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Not because they didn't have thoughts—

But because moving forward meant choosing to face whatever was out there.

And there was no guarantee it would be better than what they had already survived.

Iris's gaze moved across them.

Slowly, Deliberately. She wasn't just looking.

She was assessing.

They were still here. All of them. Barely holding together—

But intact.

That was when her thinking shifted, not emotionally, but practically.

If they were going to move—

She needed to know exactly what she was moving with.

Without saying a word, she activated her skill.

The change was subtle, almost imperceptible, but the world sharpened under her gaze. Details aligned more clearly, edges refining as if something unseen had adjusted her vision.

She looked at Henry first.

The information came and went in an instant, but it told her enough.

Henry was holding on.

Strained, but steady.

Veronica—worse than she let on.

The fatigue had sunk deeper than she showed, her strength wearing thinner beneath her composed exterior.

Benjamin, on the other hand, was stable, alert, and adapting faster than most.

Caleb was tired, but improving. Trying harder than he let anyone see, even now.

Priscilla stood firm, her stance already aligned as if she had anticipated movement before it was called.

Evelina remained composed, her presence sharp and controlled, like a blade sheathed, but never far from use.

Caleb shifted slightly beside her, not pulling away—but not entirely at ease either.

Li Wei was quiet, observant, the kind of stillness that came from discipline rather than hesitation.

Jin Tejin was the same—efficient, focused, nothing wasted.

Victor— Injured. But not slowing the group down not yet.

Claire— Stable and Focused. But her awareness wasn't evenly spread.

A part of it remained fixed elsewhere.

Elias was strained. Holding together, but just enough.

Then— Daniel.

Iris paused. Only slightly. Nothing stood out. Everything appeared normal Level, Condition, All of it… expected.

And yet, something about him didn't sit right.

Her gaze lingered just a fraction longer than necessary. Then she moved on. The skill faded. The world returned to its dull, muted state.

"We head there," Iris said. No build-up. No hesitation. Just decision.

Marcus nodded immediately. Jin Tejin adjusted his position without needing instruction.

Victor shifted his stance.

Li Wei stepped closer to Henry.

Priscilla moved into alignment beside Benjamin.

Claire repositioned near Veronica.

Evelina settled beside Caleb, her presence steady and unyielding.

Caleb noticed. He didn't say anything. But his shoulders stiffened slightly under it.

They were ready. Or at least—

As ready as they were going to be.

Behind them, Daniel didn't move right away.

His fingers tightened at his side. Subtle. Barely noticeable.

Then his gaze dropped.

A panel appeared. Familiar like it was routine. His gaze moved across it quickly.

Everything was where it should be. Everything made sense—

Until his gaze fell upon this section [ Elemental Affinity] He stilled. [ Wind.] His gaze narrowed. Focused.

Then the word shifted, not visibly, not dramatically, but enough. [Wind. (Mutated)]

For a moment, his breathing stopped entirely. That wasn't normal. That wasn't supposed to happen.

A cold realization settled in his chest, quiet but undeniable. He closed the panel immediately.

When he looked up—

No one was watching him.

But something had changed. And this time—

He knew it.

At the cave entrance, light stretched inward in thin, pale lines, cutting across the darkness like a quiet invitation.

Iris stepped toward it.

This time—

No one hesitated. They all followed.

Outside, the world waited, wide, unfamiliar, and unforgiving.

Ahead, the smoke continued to rise into the sky. Thin, steady, and deliberate.

And whatever had made it—

Was waiting.
