Chapter 37 - CHAPTER 37: THE PATH FORWARD

The light outside felt harsher than it should have.

Not brighter, but sharper in a way that made Iris narrow her eyes slightly as she stepped out of the cave. The dim weight of the interior fell away behind her, replaced by colder, thinner air that carried a faint freshness the cave had long since lost.

She paused for a brief moment, not out of hesitation, but to adjust.

Then she moved.

Snow slipped past her almost immediately, circling once before settling a few steps ahead. Its ears were forward, posture low but alert, already scanning what lay ahead.

Behind Iris, the others began to emerge one after another.

No one spoke. Someone drew in a breath as if about to say something, but the words never came. It wasn't uncertainty that held them back, but restraint. They all understood, without needing to say it, that moving forward meant committing to whatever waited beyond the forest.

Marcus shifted into position first, moving to Iris's forward-left with quiet precision. Jin Tejin mirrored him on the opposite side, his movements just as controlled. Victor followed more slowly, his injured arm held close, though he didn't allow it to disrupt his balance.

Li Wei stepped closer to Henry, maintaining a steady proximity. Priscilla aligned herself beside Benjamin. Claire adjusted slightly to guide Veronica without making it obvious, while Evelina took position next to Caleb, her presence firm and unyielding.

The formation settled into place naturally.

No one had called for it. No one needed to.

Iris noticed.

More importantly, she noticed who adapted without hesitation.

Her gaze lingered for only a second before shifting forward again.

They began their descent.

The slope was easier than the climb had been, but it wasn't forgiving. Loose soil shifted underfoot, and small stones rolled unpredictably with each step. There were shallow dips hidden beneath uneven ground that could easily throw off balance if one wasn't careful.

Iris moved with controlled precision, maintaining a steady pace that allowed momentum without risking a fall.

Behind her, the group followed more closely than before.

They had learned.

At one point, Caleb's footing slipped slightly as loose earth gave way beneath him. It wasn't dramatic, but it would have been enough to send him off balance days ago.

Evelina's hand caught his arm instantly.

Firm. Steady.

He straightened immediately, and neither of them acknowledged it. They simply continued moving as if nothing had happened.

The forest began to change as they went.

It wasn't sudden, but noticeable.

The suffocating density gradually thinned, allowing more light to filter through the canopy. The undergrowth wasn't as tight, and the spaces between trees widened just enough to make movement easier.

It should have felt safer.

It didn't.

If anything, the openness created a different kind of tension. There were fewer places for anything to hide, but that also meant fewer barriers between them and whatever might already be watching.

Iris felt it, but she didn't voice it.

She didn't need to.

Time passed in steady movement.

Sweat returned, clinging uncomfortably to skin and fabric. Dirt layered over what was already there, leaving no one untouched by the grime of the journey.

Caleb wiped his face once, only to regret it immediately as he smeared dirt across his skin. He said nothing, and no one commented.

Snow stopped.

The change was immediate.

Its body stiffened, ears snapping forward as it focused on something ahead.

Iris halted without turning, and the group froze behind her just as quickly. The silence that followed wasn't empty, but tense, filled with the quiet act of listening.

There was movement.

Soft.

Controlled.

Too deliberate to be the wind.

It stopped briefly, just long enough to make it seem like nothing was there at all—

Then it moved again.

Closer.

"…Left," Jin Tejin said quietly.

Iris didn't respond. She didn't need to.

The creatures emerged low and fast.

They weren't the same as the ones they had encountered before. These were leaner, with longer limbs and sharper, more aggressive movement.

They didn't hesitate.

They attacked.

Marcus fired first, his shot clean and precise, dropping one immediately. Victor followed, his movements controlled despite his injury, adjusting his timing to compensate.

Jin Tejin shifted his position to cut off a flanking path before it could fully form. Li Wei stepped in near Henry, intercepting a creature that had angled too close.

Priscilla maintained alignment with Benjamin, keeping their spacing intact. Claire pulled Veronica slightly back, not out of panic, but calculation.

Evelina stepped forward, placing herself between Caleb and the incoming threat. Caleb stiffened for a moment, but he held his ground.

One of the creatures broke through the line.

It was faster than expected, slipping past their formation and heading straight toward Elias.

Daniel moved.

The distance closed almost instantly.

Too fast.

His strike landed cleanly, stopping the creature before it could reach its target.

It dropped.

But for a brief second, something about the way it fell didn't match the hit.

Daniel's expression tightened slightly before smoothing out again.

No one spoke.

But Claire saw.

And this time, she didn't dismiss it.

She simply chose not to say anything.

The fight ended as quickly as it began.

Short. Violent. Controlled.

The remaining creatures hit the ground, and silence returned just as suddenly.

Breathing grew heavier, not from exhaustion, but from the tension that had yet to fully settle.

They checked themselves.

No serious injuries.

Victor adjusted his stance again. Caleb flexed his fingers slightly. Evelina remained where she was until she was certain he was steady.

Iris scanned their surroundings briefly.

Nothing else moved.

"No lingering," she said.

They resumed walking almost immediately.

This time, their pace was faster. Not rushed, but deliberate. They didn't linger where they didn't have to.

As they continued, the forest opened further.

Trees spaced out more noticeably now, and the undergrowth thinned to the point where light spread more evenly across the ground. The air felt different, less enclosed, but not necessarily lighter.

Something about it had changed.

A faint sound reached them from a distance.

It wasn't like the creatures.

There was rhythm to it, uneven but patterned in a way that didn't belong to the forest.

Iris noticed.

She said nothing.

The terrain began to level out.

Then the trees broke.

Not abruptly, but enough to create a clear opening ahead.

Iris slowed, not by conscious decision, but instinct. Snow stepped forward first, then stopped.

Iris moved past the last stretch of brush.

The forest gave way to open space.

Wide. Clear.

And there—

Structures.

Rough wooden buildings stood unevenly across the clearing, forming a loose perimeter that looked more intentional than strong.

Movement shifted within.

People.

Real people.

No one spoke at first.

The sight settled heavily over them.

Caleb let out a quiet breath. "No way…"

Veronica's posture shifted slightly, though she didn't relax. Henry's gaze remained sharp, and the others held their positions, none of them lowering their guard.

Iris didn't step forward immediately.

Her eyes moved carefully across the scene.

The walls were weak.

The construction uneven.

There was no clear defensive structure.

Movement inside was disorganized.

The smoke source—confirmed.

People—yes.

Safety…

Uncertain.

They had finally found people.

But something about it didn't feel right.
