I stood there backed against the wall in my own damn room, heart pounding like it wanted out, staring at Dan with his stupid desperate face, hair all messed up from running his hands through it, and I could smell that alpha scent of his creeping in, all pine and regret or whatever bullshit he was pushing.
He just asked what the hell he could do to get me to agree to this fake marriage crap, like I was some prize he could bargain for, and I laughed, short and bitter, because if he only knew how deep this went for me, how this wasn't just about him screwing me over that night but something way bigger, way darker that could blow everything up.
