The next night came fast.
Shibuya hadn't slept. The rumors spread like wildfire across hunter forums, Line groups, and underground chats: an A-rank Gate had opened near Hachiko Square. Not the usual low-threat pop-up. This one was big. Dark purple rimmed with black veins. The kind that made even S-rank hunters hesitate.
Haruto arrived early.
He stood on the rooftop of a nearby building, black coat blending into the shadows. Below, the square was cordoned off—yellow tape, police lights flashing, civilians pushed back behind barriers. Hunters gathered in small teams: guild patches shining under streetlamps, weapons drawn, auras flaring.
He scanned the crowd.
**[Instant Analyze – Wide Area.]**
**[Hunter count: 42 registered. Ranks: C (28), B (11), A (3). No S-rank present.]**
**[Gate Status: A-rank (High). Type: Shadow Labyrinth. Monsters: Unknown (high density). Estimated clear time if failed: Dungeon Break in 48 hours.]**
His red eyes narrowed.
"Shadow Labyrinth… fitting."
A familiar voice cut through the murmur below.
"Haruto Sasaki."
Miya Okhotsu landed lightly on the rooftop edge beside him—katana at her hip, silver hair catching the neon glow. Lightning crackled faintly around her fingertips.
"You came."
Haruto didn't look at her.
"Promised, didn't I?"
She studied him for a second.
"Yuki's already inside with the vanguard team. They're holding the entrance. But the deeper layers… no one's come back yet."
She drew her sword halfway—blue-white blade humming with electricity.
"We need every edge we can get."
Haruto finally turned.
His eyes met hers.
"Then let's not waste time."
They dropped down together.
The Gate loomed—ten meters tall, swirling purple-black vortex. Cold wind howled out of it, carrying whispers and distant screams.
Two hunters guarded the entrance: a burly C-rank with a shield, and Yuki—blue hair wet with sweat, ice shards floating around him.
Yuki spotted them.
"Took you long enough."
He glanced at Haruto.
"Ready to prove you're not just talk?"
Haruto stepped forward without answering.
**[Tenebrae – Passive Aura.]**
A faint black mist coiled at his feet, pushing back the Gate's oppressive energy.
The shield guy flinched.
"What the hell is that…?"
Yuki's eyes narrowed.
"Interesting."
Miya placed a hand on Haruto's shoulder—brief, firm.
"Stay alive. We clear this together."
Haruto nodded once.
Then stepped through.
Darkness swallowed him.
Inside was a maze of black stone corridors. Walls pulsed like living veins. Torches of purple flame flickered, casting long shadows.
**[Gate Interior: Shadow Labyrinth – Floor 1.]**
**[Monsters detected: Shadow Wraiths Lv.12–15 (x18), Umbral Behemoth Lv.18 (Boss candidate).]**
The first wraiths lunged—ghostly figures with claw-like hands.
Haruto moved.
**[Judgment Blade – Lv.2 (upgraded from level up).]**
Silver crescent sliced through three at once. They dissolved into smoke.
More came.
He spun.
**[Black Chain Curse – Lv.2.]**
Chains exploded from every shadow, wrapping, crushing, dragging bodies into the dark.
EXP ticked up fast.
**[EXP +450]**
**[Level Up! Level 4 → Level 5]**
He kept moving deeper.
The corridors twisted. Whispers grew louder—voices from his old world. His sister's scream. Comrades dying. Nox's laugh.
He clenched his jaw.
"Shut up."
**[Aura Fear – Lv.2.]**
The whispers faltered.
Then the floor opened.
He dropped into a massive chamber.
A giant shadow beast waited—Umbral Behemoth. Ten meters tall, body made of writhing darkness, red eyes glowing.
It roared.
The sound shook the walls.
Yami smiled thinly.
"Finally."
He cracked his knuckles.
**[Dragon Variant – Partial: Azura Dragon.]**
Blue scales shimmered faintly over his arms. Claws extended. Speed surged.
He charged.
The Behemoth swung a massive claw.
Haruto dodged—barely—air whistling past.
**[Crimson Flames – Lv.2.]**
Red-black fire erupted from his fists, slamming into the beast's chest.
It staggered.
But didn't fall.
The beast countered—shadow tendrils lashing out.
Haruto leaped back.
Then the Gate shook.
Miya and Yuki burst into the chamber.
Miya's sword crackled with lightning.
"Lightning Palace – Partial Domain!"
Storm clouds gathered overhead—even inside the labyrinth. Bolts struck the Behemoth, chaining across its body.
Yuki raised both hands.
**[Cryogenic Freezing – Targeted.]**
Ice spread from the floor, locking the beast's legs in absolute zero.
The Behemoth roared—struggling.
Haruto saw the opening.
He dashed forward.
**[Tenebrae – Full Activation (Lv.1).]**
A small black sphere formed in his palm.
He hurled it.
The sphere hit the beast's core.
And expanded.
Darkness swallowed light. Shadows devoured shadows.
The Behemoth screamed—a sound like tearing reality.
Then silence.
The darkness collapsed inward.
The beast vanished—erased.
**[Gate Boss defeated.]**
**[EXP +1200]**
**[Level Up! Level 5 → Level 7]**
**[New Skill Evolution Available: Tenebrae → Lv.2 (Selective Devour).]**
The chamber trembled.
The Gate began to collapse.
Miya lowered her sword, breathing hard.
"You… erased it."
Yuki stared at Haruto.
"What the hell are you?"
Haruto let the black mist fade.
His red eyes glowed faintly in the dimming light.
"Just someone who came back."
The Gate exit opened.
They stepped out.
Shibuya Square erupted in cheers—hunters clapping, civilians filming.
Miya looked at him.
"You're not registering, are you?"
Haruto shook his head.
"Not yet."
Yuki crossed his arms.
"Then what now?"
Haruto looked up at the night sky.
"More Gates. More power."
He turned to walk away.
"But next time… don't hold back."
Miya smiled faintly.
"We won't."
Yuki just watched him go.
The neon lights reflected in Haruto's red eyes.
The apocalypse wasn't coming.
It was already here.
Inside him.
