Cherreads

Chapter 7 - Chapter 6: Fractured Alliances.

The cheers in Hachiko Square faded behind Haruto as he walked away from the collapsing Gate's exit point. Neon lights reflected off wet pavement—rain had started, light and cold. He pulled his black scarf up, hiding the faint smile on his lips.

Level 7.

Tenebrae at Lv.2.

The power felt… right. Like a piece of his old self waking up.

But he wasn't alone.

Footsteps followed—two sets. One light and quick, the other steady and deliberate.

He stopped under an awning outside a closed konbini. Rain drummed on the metal roof.

Miya and Yuki caught up.

Miya's silver hair stuck to her cheeks, lightning still faintly crackling in her eyes from the fight.

"You just walked off," she said. "No explanation. No goodbye."

Haruto turned slowly.

"Didn't think I owed one."

Yuki crossed his arms, water dripping from his blue hair.

"You erased an A-rank boss like it was trash. Alone. In front of witnesses."

He stepped closer.

"People are already talking. Guild scouts. Independent hunters. Even some S-rank ears might perk up."

Haruto met his gaze.

"And?"

"And you're unregistered," Miya cut in. "No ID. No affiliation. But you fight like someone who's killed gods."

She wiped rain from her face.

"The Guild will come looking. They always do for anomalies."

Haruto exhaled.

"Let them look."

Yuki's eyes narrowed.

"You think you can stay hidden forever?"

Haruto's red eyes gleamed under the streetlight.

"I don't hide. I choose when to be seen."

Silence.

Rain fell harder.

Miya broke it first.

"We cleared that Gate together. You saved our asses back there."

She looked at him—really looked.

"We want you in the team. Officially. Or at least… unofficially."

Yuki grunted.

"Speak for yourself."

But he didn't contradict her.

Haruto studied them both.

Miya: lightning in her veins, loyalty in her eyes.

Yuki: ice in his control, protectiveness like a blade.

They were strong.

But not like him.

Not yet.

Haruto felt the System hum in his soul.

He looked at Miya.

"You trust too easily."

Then at Yuki.

"And you trust too little."

He stepped back into the rain.

"I'll think about it."

Miya opened her mouth to protest.

Haruto raised a hand.

"But one thing is clear."

He let a thin thread of black mist coil around his fingers—Tenebrae's new selective touch.

"If you ever point a blade at me again…"

His voice dropped.

"I won't hold back."

Yuki's expression hardened, but he nodded once.

"Fair."

Miya sighed.

"Stubborn idiot."

She tossed him a small device—black, sleek, like a modern pager.

"Encrypted line. If you change your mind… or if you need backup."

Haruto caught it.

Didn't thank her.

Just pocketed it.

He turned and walked into the rain.

Behind him, Miya whispered to Yuki.

"He's dangerous."

Yuki watched Haruto's silhouette fade into the neon haze.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"But he's also exactly what we need."

The rain kept falling.

Haruto didn't look back.

**[Quest "Fractured Alliances" – In Progress.]**

**[Pending decision.]**

He smiled faintly under the scarf.

The city lights blurred in the downpour.

Gates would keep opening.

Hunters would keep coming.

And he would keep rising.

One shadow at a time.
