The next day arrived far too quickly for Shunsui's liking. He woke up with the sun already climbing high, groaned at the brightness sneaking through the window, and dragged himself out of bed.
He had thought of skipping academy today but he was supposed to get his jonin sensei today and meet the rest of his team.
After a slow breakfast of rice and pickled vegetables that the matron had left for him, he strapped his twin swords to his waist.
He probably might have to use them in the test that jonin sensei would give it to them.
The blades rested comfortably against his pink kimono. No one in the village had ever questioned where he got such fine weapons.
The only person who ever asked was the matron herself. Years ago, when she first caught him practicing swings in the orphanage backyard, she had narrowed her eyes and demanded answers.
Shunsui had calmly told her that a kind shinobi had given them to him after seeing how interested he was in sword training.
She had stared at him with deep suspicion, clearly thinking he might have stolen them from some shop or training ground. There was no way that her lazy charge would be interested in sword training.
He had sworn on his lazy life that he did not steal them. After a long moment of silence, she had sighed and let it go, though she still gave him warning looks whenever he carried them around.
Shunsui preferred to keep the real secret hidden until the end of the academy.
The truth was simple: he could summon Katen Kyokotsu out of thin air whenever he wanted.
The swords appeared in his hands with just a thought and a tiny pulse of chakra.
Explaining that would raise too many questions, especially about where the blades came from. And an academy student with what looks like a space time jutsu would attract lot of attention that Shunsui did not want at that time.
He figured he would have to tell his jonin sensei eventually.
For now, though, the mystery amused him. 'It would be fun to see someone trying to steal them,' he thought with a small smirk.
'They grab the hilt, run away miles, and poof, the swords vanish and reappear right back in my hands the next second. Their faces would be priceless. I might even laugh out loud for once.'
He arrived at the academy with his usual slow walk, straw hat low over his eyes to block the morning light. The classroom was already half full of the fresh graduates.
Shunsui found a spot near the back, leaned against the wall, and scanned the room.
There they were: Rin Nohara, Obito Uchiha, Kurenai Yuhi, Asuma Sarutobi, Might Guy, Genma Shiranui and a few others whose names he vaguely remembered from the Naruto canon.
'Well, now I know exactly when Obito graduated,' Shunsui thought as he watched the Uchiha boy argue loudly with someone about who had the better taijutsu.
'So it should be around two to three years before he gives his Sharingan to Kakashi during that bridge mission and becomes Madara's pet project. Poor guy. Gets crushed by a rock, loses an eye, turns evil, causes endless crimes. Classic tragic backstory.'
He shook his head slightly. 'Well, cannot say I ever liked the guy anyway. He is way too loud, always disturbs my sleep with his shouting, and he makes fun of my pink kimono every single time he sees me. Calls it "girly" or "weird festival clothes." As if his orange goggles are fashionable. I am a petty, petty man, and I hold grudges over small things like that.'
'Lets hope that I will not be in his genin team,' Shunsui continued thinking. 'It would be a pain in the ass. Imagine missions with him yelling all the time every five minutes while I just want quietness. No thank you. I would prefer being in a team with Naras and Aburames.'
Besides Shunsui did not want Madara's or Zetsu's attention by being in the same team as Obito. What if instead of Rin they decided to kill him to get Obito to unlock his Mangekyou?
The door slid open, and the academy instructor stepped in with a scroll. He began reading out team assignments in a flat voice.
"Rin Nohara, Obito Uchiha, your sensei is Minato Namikaze."
Shunsui let out a quiet breath of relief. 'Ah, thanks sage for this small mercy,' he thought gratefully. At least the canon team was staying together for now.
He glanced toward the doorway where a flash of yellow appeared. Minato Namikaze stood there, tall and handsome with his spiky blond hair and calm blue eyes.
The man smiled warmly at his two new genin, a smile so bright it probably charmed half the girls in the classroom instantly. "Let's get going," Minato said in a friendly tone. "Your last teammate is waiting for you."
Shunsui nodded to himself. 'At least this part of the canon did not get changed. Kakashi will be the last member of their team. He must be six or seven right now and already a chunin. He should have been playing hide and seek with children and he is already a shinobi.'
Shunsui was sure that he had heard rumours of the genius white fang son in the first year of the academy. And since the legendary White Fang, Sakumo Hatake died, Kakashi would have the motivation to become a shinobi soon with very very early graduation.
Sensei then announced the next team "Raidō Namiashi, Kurenai Yuhi and Asuma Sarutobi, Your sensei would be Senju Ren."
'Ah, It seems like Asuma got his wish or maybe he pulled some strings with his daddy dearest to get himself into the team with his dearest crush. Well, Good for him. I don't know much about Raido though.' Shunsui thought
"Aobo Yamishiro, Ebisu and Ibiki Morino, Your sensei is Yamanaka Gentai." Sensei announced the next team.
Shunsui was happy that he was not in the team with Ebisu. The dude was too stuck in rules and very annoying to deal with.
His moment of happiness lasted only a few seconds. The instructor continued. "Might Guy, Genma Shiranui, and Shunsui Kyoraku, your sensei is Choza Akimichi."
