Mrs. Zhao sat primly, looking at Zhao Ling'e. "Everything is fine back in Linfeng," she said. "Perhaps the clan has been busy these past few months, as I haven't received any letters from them either."
Zhao Ling'e sharply noted that Mrs. Zhao had said "the clan," without mentioning her parents.
"After I left Linfeng, I never saw the clan head again. I often think back on my days there with great fondness," Zhao Ling'e sighed softly. "Speaking of which, your daughter should be old enough for the next selection. Why not have her participate? She could come to the palace and keep me company."
A flash of delight appeared in Mrs. Zhao's eyes, but her face remained impassive. "How could she possibly compare to you, Lady Zhao?" she said. "Even if she entered the palace, I'm afraid she wouldn't be of much help to you."
