She hesitated. It was already late, and she didn't have the energy to go out to a pharmacy for cold medicine. She had no choice but to fall back on yesterday's homespun, physical remedy. But for some reason, this foolproof method, one that had never failed her, suddenly stopped working.
She drank water desperately, but it was no use. She was sweating in waves, soaking her sleeping bag. Loose strands of hair clung to her forehead, and she looked as if she'd just been pulled from the water.
Throughout the night, it was a cycle of sweating, her fever breaking, the sweat subsiding, and her temperature soaring again. She tossed and turned restlessly. By the next morning, however, she was burning hot and didn't even have the strength to move. In her daze, it felt as though the sun had never risen, and she quickly fell unconscious again.
