"So... what if I refuse?" I asked, my voice steady and calm, surprising even myself amid the tension crackling through the air.
The courtyard fell into a heavy silence. Every eye locked onto me, the weight of hundreds of curious and expectant gazes pressing down like a physical force. Whispers died on lips. The afternoon sun seemed to dim, as if the academy itself held its breath.
Irene was the first to break it. She met my stare directly, her posture rigid with authority.
"You will be punished for refusing a binding duel," Irene said firmly.
I frowned, my brows knitting together as frustration simmered beneath my skin. My fingers curled slightly at my sides.
"Why would I be punished?" I demanded. "Kaelara is the one who wants to fight. She's the one hunting me down for this duel. Why am I the one being forced into it?"
A few students exchanged uncertain glances, shifting their weight. The logic hung in the air, undeniable. Murmurs rippled faintly before fading again.
