Chōjirō Sasakibe lowered his cold gaze toward the cracked desert earth below, but the imposing silhouette of the Captain-Commander gave absolutely no indication to halt.
Seeing this lack of restraint, the Lieutenant lightly raised his left hand, his thumb catching the guard of his Zanpakutō, Gonryōmaru.
CHING.
A sharp, chilling flash of polished spiritual steel was drawn from the dark scabbard. The blinding glare cut through the reinforced cockpit window of the hovering S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjet, leaving the few agents inside completely terrified at the sheer, cold lethality of the visual.
"Are we... are we seriously going to die out here, boss?" the pilot whispered, his fingers trembling slightly against the flight controls.
It wasn't due to a lack of professional training; compared to the concept of death itself, the psychological torment of waiting for an inevitable execution was infinitely more terrifying. Especially while actively watching the Zanpakutō in Chōjirō Sasakibe's hand slowly, smoothly slide out of its sheath. The ambient spiritual pressure radiating from the floating officer was becoming suffocating.
TAP.
At that exact second, a tanned hand draped in rings casually extended through the air, gently blocking Sasakibe's continued drawing motion.
"I say, Vice-Captain Sasakibe," a lazy, melodic voice broke the tension. "Old Man Yama hasn't officially given the execution order just yet. There's really no need to put on such a scary expression. Be careful not to frighten our new friends in the metal bird."
Kyōraku Shunsui stood aloft on the thermal currents, his signature pink floral kimono draped loosely over his black Captain's haori. With an effortlessly lazy, laid-back expression, he placed his palm firmly on Sasakibe's shoulder.
Hearing the intervention, Sasakibe paused, turning his eyes downward toward the silent position of the Captain-Commander.
Right then, a roaring, gravelly voice echoed directly within both of their minds via telepathic spiritual transmission.
"Stand down, Chōjirō!"
"Since Captain Kyōraku is so eagerly willing to step forward, let his division handle the parameters of the negotiations," the voice boomed. "But Kyōraku... remember this well! Our sacred mission does not allow for a single soul to interfere."
Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni held no fondness for the mundane affairs of humans, but he also harbored no inherent ill will toward their fragile species. He knew all too well what kind of deeply empathetic, manipulative personalities his two oldest disciples possessed. Since Kyōraku wanted to spare these mortals' lives to avoid unnecessary paperwork, the old Master naturally wouldn't oppose such a minor tactical concession.
The absolute prerequisite was that these government agents must not hinder the grand operational script of their journey.
"Let's go over to the clearing and have a little chat, everyone," Kyōraku Shunsui said, lightly tapping his knuckles against the reinforced hull of the Quinjet's cockpit.
'Without the bureaucratic, annoying constraints of the Central 46 Chambers looming over our heads,' Shunsui mused with a silent grin, 'Old Man Yama has honestly become much more reasonable on these field deployments.'
Of course, the fact that Old Man Yama was agreeing to his current leniency didn't mean he could push his luck. Kyōraku Shunsui understood that razor-thin boundary perfectly.
The stealth Quinjet slowly descended, its landing gear clicking into the tall grass of the valley's outer perimeter. The ramp lowered, and Agent Phil Coulson stepped out into the dry heat, immediately extending his right hand toward the approaching Captain of the Eighth Division.
"Hello, sir. I'm Agent Coulson, representing S.H.I.E.L.D."
"Kyōraku Shunsui," the man replied, nonchalantly shaking Coulson's hand with a loose grip.
This casual display wasn't born out of intentional disrespect or military arrogance, but rather his inherent, deeply relaxed nature. Coulson, seasoned in dealing with high-tier egos, didn't mind the slight anomaly at all. The geopolitical power balance between their two organizations was inherently, drastically unequal. S.H.I.E.L.D. was fully aware that they were the weaker party in this sector.
"Mr. Kyōraku, this is my official federal identification," Coulson began, holding up his badge. "For this immediate meeting... our primary purpose is simply to understand your military objective in occupying this localized coordinate. If your faction is merely migrating its forces and has no intention of harming human civilians, our director has fully sensed this goodwill. Moreover, we also have an active, ongoing diplomatic cooperation with Vice-Captain Rukia Kuchiki. We do not wish to become hostile with your people."
Coulson managed to deliver the entire tactical statement in a single, rapid breath. This speed wasn't driven by nervousness or professional urgency, but rather the fact that simply standing within three feet of Kyōraku Shunsui caused him to experience an immense, suffocating weight.
It wasn't a physical gravity, but a profound, crushing spiritual pressure. The ambient Reiatsu leaking off the Shinigami Captain made it psychologically impossible for an ordinary human to remain calm. Feeling as if his internal organs might literally fail or his heart might stop in the very next second, Coulson could only speed up his speech, hastily finishing his pitch.
Otherwise, he genuinely feared he might suddenly drop dead right there on the grass.
"Hmm?" Kyōraku blinked, looking down at the pale, sweating state of the agent's face. "Oh! My bad, my bad."
Only then did the veteran Captain remember just how oppressive his passive Reiatsu could be for a living mortal without an active soul chain.
SHUUN.
With a sudden, blurring execution of Shunpo, Kyōraku Shunsui instantly vanished from the spot, reappearing dozens of yards away on a small rocky ridge before speaking again.
"Hey, kid. Feeling a bit better now?"
"Hah... hah~" Coulson fell to one knee, clutching his chest as he violently dragged fresh oxygen back into his lungs. "Thank you... Mr. Kyōraku."
Once the crushing gravity of the Captain-class Reiatsu was physically removed from his immediate radius, Coulson finally felt alive again, his vision clearing as the cold sweat began to dry.
"Alright now? Good," Kyōraku said from his distant perch. He unclipped a heavy, wooden sake gourd from his sash and took a long, leisurely swig. Only after wiping his mouth did he begin to properly explain the situation to the recovery team. "Since you've already had direct contact with Vice-Captain Rukia, you should already be fully aware of the basic spiritual origins of the Gods of Death. I won't waste time explaining the academy texts."
Pausing briefly, Shunsui's expression turned a fraction more serious behind the brim of his straw hat.
"You humans are the primary law enforcement agency of the living, physical world. You can basically understand our Gotei 13 as the sovereign law enforcement agency of the spiritual world—specifically, our designated sector of Hell. It's just that the current landscape of the Pit doesn't only contain our jurisdiction anymore. There are native, primordial demons actively occupying the lower depths."
Shunsui gestured toward the massive gathering of black-robed figures in the center of the ruins. "And this mass mobilization tonight... is a high-stakes ritual designed to permanently expand and strengthen the spiritual power of the Gods of Death. So, you humans just need to park your vehicles and watch the show from a very safe distance. Don't get close. And do not interfere under any tactical circumstances."
Kyōraku Shunsui spoke extensively, but his seasoned silver tongue still managed to avoid revealing the exact mechanical nature of what the ritual was actually trying to achieve with the Contract.
However, Coulson's brilliant diplomatic mind did extract one crucial, horrifying truth from the Captain's words. This ritual was an explicit declaration of war. The Gods of Death were aggressively reinforcing their parameters to wage a massive, localized campaign against the forces of Hell.
'And if the Shinigami are gathering here to trigger a war,' Coulson analyzed, 'would the demon side simply sit back and let them do it?'
The answer was an absolute, terrifying no. A catastrophic, multi-dimensional clash was about to violently unfold right on this soil. No wonder the Shinigami had forcefully cleared all civilian populations within a hundred kilometers; it was all a calculated preparation to establish a localized kill zone.
"You seem to fully understand the weight of the script," Shunsui smiled, noticing the shift in the agent's eyes. "Good. In that case, I don't need to waste any more valuable words. Enjoy the fireworks, kid. Just remember to find yourself a nice, shady spot."
While Coulson was still processing the deep, ominous warning behind Kyōraku Shunsui's final sentence, the sharp, gravelly voice of Director Nick Fury crackled cleanly through his secure earpiece.
"Coulson, abort the negotiation and fall back immediately. Get back on the jet."
"Director?"
"We cannot, under any circumstances, get involved in this deployment," Fury stated coldly from the Helicarrier bridge. "We are ceding the entire San Venganza airspace. We will give them this territory as a designated battlefield. The World Security Council has already reviewed the energy profiles and made a definitive executive decision. Whether it's native demons or ancient Gods of Death... humanity has zero operational reason—and more importantly, zero physical capability—to intervene in their conflict. We simply don't have the teeth for this caliber of war."
"Alright, Director. I understand. Pulling back now."
The Quinjet's thrusters roared to life once more, the heavy craft lifting off the grass and heading rapidly toward the distant safety of the S.H.I.E.L.D. perimeter line.
After utilizing his Flash Step to return to the heart of the Gotei 13 assembly, Kyōraku Shunsui walked straight over to the side of his closest friend, Jūshirō Ukitake.
"Has your Vice-Captain still not returned from her sector yet?" Shunsui asked in a low whisper, glancing toward the front of the line. "Let's hope she doesn't go making Old Man Yama deploy his bad temper before the sun sets."
"Rukia will be here momentarily," Ukitake replied gently, coughing slightly into his sleeve. "What about your side assignment? How was the representative from the human agency?"
"He's a pretty smart guy, honestly," Shunsui chuckled, adjusting his cloak. "I only fed him a tiny sliver of the script, and his mind immediately caught the entire plot."
SHUUN. SHUUN.
Their whispered conversation was cut short as the air violently rippled. The high-speed arrival of Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai immediately drew the sharp attention of their respective Division Captains. None of the lower-seat officers paid them any mind, but the distinct, erratic fluctuations in their remaining spiritual pressure did not escape the notice of Jūshirō Ukitake and Byakuya Kuchiki.
"Did you engage an active target on the road?" Ukitake asked, his brow furrowing as his eyes locked onto his Lieutenant.
He could see the faint, microscopic white ice crystals still clinging to the edges of Rukia's shihakushō. As the master of Sōgyo no Kotowari, Ukitake recognized the residue instantly. This was the specific molecular freeze left behind only after the deployment of Rukia's Bankai, Hakka no Togame.
Rukia stepped forward, bowing her head respectfully as she rapidly reported the encounter with the Yellow-Eyed Demon, Azazel, and his direct connection to the Lords of Hell.
Hearing the detailed report, Jūshirō Ukitake's warm expression turned incredibly grave. He looked up toward the darkening horizon, his hand resting tightly on the hilt of his sword.
"As expected... this war is completely, utterly unavoidable."
The afternoon light finally bled away, and the cold shadows of night began to heavily engulf the ruins of San Venganza. The precise cosmic hour to break the seal of the Contract had officially arrived.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
The sharp, heavy impacts of a polished oak cane striking the cracked desert bedrock three times echoed with absolute authority across the entire valley, instantly silencing every single heartbeat in the assembly. The spiritual pressure of the entire terrain violently twisted as the old Master stepped forward.
"Everyone... assume primary combat configurations," Captain-Commander Yamamoto commanded, his eyes slowly opening to reveal a sea of absolute, ancient fire. "No petty entities will be permitted to disrupt the Seireitei's mandate tonight!"
