Chapter 39 - Shadows Return

The echoes of joy in Eldrida Palace had barely faded when a scent of fear and death began to permeate the air. For several days, chilling reports had been pouring in from the distant villages of the kingdom. People were dying in vast numbers under mysterious circumstances—their bodies were drained of color, left with two distinct puncture wounds on their necks.

A heavy silence hung over the royal court. King Julian's face was etched with deep worry. Sofia and Cable stood by his side. Sofia's heart hammered against her ribs; she feared that the darkness she had long escaped—perhaps her father's shadow—had finally tracked her down.

King Julian addressed the assembly in a stern, booming voice:

"My dear citizens and nobles... the truth can no longer be shrouded in silence. The peace of Eldrida has been shattered. A wave of death is sweeping through our borders, and those who fall are not victims of disease."

Whispers erupted across the hall. The King raised his voice even louder:

"Be on your guard! Vampires have infiltrated our kingdom. This is no mere rumor, but a cold, hard truth. They strike in the shadows, feeding on the lifeblood of our innocent people."

Panic rippled through the court. Nobles turned pale, and a cold dread filled the room. Sofia gripped Cable's hand tightly. She knew that with the word 'Vampire' now on everyone's lips, her secret and her very life were more vulnerable than ever.

Cable stepped forward, his voice firm. "Father, if this is true, we must mobilize the army immediately. We must impose a curfew and hunt down the lairs where these creatures hide."

King Julian nodded grimly. "Yes, Cable. But this is no ordinary war. We are fighting a force that is ancient and immortal. Every step we take must be calculated with extreme caution."

Sofia remained silent, but one name echoed in her mind—Victor. Had her father found her? Was this trail of blood a message meant specifically for her?

Following King Julian's decree, a chilling silence descended upon Eldrida. The city, once famous for its vibrant nightlife and music, was transformed into a fortified prison. The King acted swiftly to issue orders to halt the invisible predators.

The Night Curfew and Royal Mandate

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, royal heralds beat their drums throughout the streets, announcing the mandate: "By order of His Majesty, no citizen is permitted outside after sunset. Keep your windows barred and doors locked. Do not open for any stranger."

A strict Night Curfew was enforced across the kingdom. Lanterns in homes were extinguished, leaving only the golden flicker of the royal guards' torches visible in the deserted alleys.

Heavy Guard and Fortification

The number of soldiers stationed on the city walls and watchtowers was doubled. King Julian ordered every square and secret passage to be monitored around the clock.

Vigilant Guards: Soldiers in heavy iron armor, armed with spears and swords, kept a close watch for even the slightest sound.

A Ring of Fire: Massive braziers were lit along the outer walls of the palace to ensure no shadow could move unseen.

Protective Charms: Following ancient folklore, bundles of garlic and specific herbs were hung over doorways, as citizens sought any form of protection against the supernatural.

From the high balcony of the palace, Cable and Sofia watched the grim transformation of their city. Cable's hand rested on the hilt of his sword, his eyes scanning the darkness. Beside him, Sofia remained eerily quiet. She knew better than anyone that ordinary stone walls and torches would be little more than a nuisance to hunters who could move as fluidly as the shadows themselves.

The nights in Eldrida were now wrapped in a shroud of terror. While the palace was heavily fortified, the termite of suspicion had begun to gnaw at the very foundations of the royal family.

A Mysterious Witness

One afternoon, as King Julian was reviewing security reports in his private chambers, a courtier presented a commoner before him. The man was trembling violently, but the truth of what he had witnessed burned in his eyes.

Following strict royal protocol, the man bowed low and spoke in a hushed tone, "Your Majesty, forgive me... but during the curfew last night, I saw something that grants me no peace. I saw Princess Sofia near the rear gates in the dark... and there were deep, fresh bloodstains upon her royal garments."

A mask of cold steel fell over King Julian's face. He dismissed the witness with a silent wave, and a heavy silence filled the room.

A Father and Son's Secret Counsel

King Julian immediately summoned Prince Cable for a private audience. When Cable arrived, he saw a look of unprecedented distress on his father's face.

"Cable, come closer," the King said in a low, somber voice. "I wish to ask you a question—not as your father, but as your King. Have you ever had any reason to suspect Sofia? Has anything about her behavior ever struck you as... unusual?"

Cable's heart skipped a beat, but he maintained his royal composure. He replied with unwavering dignity, "No, Your Majesty. Sofia is my wife and a Princess of this realm. Her conduct has always been graceful and kind. I have not even a shred of doubt regarding her."

King Julian's eyes searched his son's for the truth. "Then tell me, Cable—where was Sofia last night?"

Without hesitation, Cable lied, "She was with me the entire night, Father. We remained in our chambers."

The King took a deep breath and turned toward the window. "Very well, Cable. You may leave."

Cable bowed respectfully and exited the room, but as soon as the doors closed, his brow furrowed with worry. He knew that Sofia's secret was now standing on the edge of a precipice.

After Prince Cable departed, the weight on King Julian's heart did not lighten. As a father, he wanted to believe his son, but as a King, he could not gamble with the safety of his kingdom. He sensed that Cable's love for Sofia might be blinding him to a terrifying truth.

A Secret Summon

The King struck a small silver bell on his desk. Within moments, a figure entered the room like a silent shadow. It was Sir Alistair—the most trusted Commander of the Royal Guard and the King's oldest confidant, known for his absolute loyalty and lethal silence.

Adhering to strict royal etiquette, Sir Alistair dropped to one knee, bowing his head in profound respect. "Your Majesty, you summoned this humble servant?"

The King's Stern Command

King Julian stood by the window, watching the fading light. He turned, his gaze piercing into Alistair's. "Alistair, today I charge you with a task that weighs heavily upon my soul. But the safety of Eldrida stands above all else."

Alistair replied without blinking, "Your command is my law, Your Majesty."

The King lowered his voice, "Watch Princess Sofia. From sunset until the break of dawn, I want a report on her every movement, every encounter, and every step she takes. Not even Prince Cable must know of this. Maintain the utmost royal decorum—this surveillance must be so discreet that even the winds do not catch wind of it."

A flicker of surprise crossed Alistair's face, but he quickly masked it with his usual stoicism. He bowed once more. "As you wish, My King. Not even the Princess's shadow shall escape my vigil."

King Julian dismissed him with a heavy wave of his hand. In the grand corridors of the palace, the seeds of conspiracy and suspicion had been sown.
