Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Fate of "Mr. Happy"

The diary update hit SHIELD Headquarters like a tactical nuke.

Nick Fury stared at the screen, his mind racing.

"They met," Fury muttered. "Lucas and Stark. In mid-air."

The team—Coulson, Natasha, and Barton—exchanged glances. This was a deviation. A massive one.

"According to the psychological profile," Coulson noted, "Lucas likes Stark. He calls him 'arrogant' and 'toxic,' but also 'god-tier will' and 'iron spirit.' He sees Stark as a tragic hero."

"He wanted to meet him," Fury agreed. "But not like this. Not while floating at 30,000 feet without a plan."

"The timeline is broken," Natasha said, leaning over the table. "We established the 'Stark Narrative': Afghanistan. Kidnapping. Cave. Redemption. Iron Man. That's the script."

"But Stark skipped it," Fury said. "He cancelled the trip. We confirmed that. And now he has the Mark 3 armor."

"Which means," Fury concluded, "Stark knows."

The room went silent.

"Stark knows about the kidnapping," Fury elaborated. "He avoided the trap. And if he avoided the trap... he likely knows about the diary."

"Or," Natasha suggested, "he has a copy."

Fury looked at the black notebook on his desk.

"If Stark has a copy," Fury said, "then he's been playing us. He's been playing everyone."

"But here's the kicker," Fury pointed to the screen. "Lucas mentions the 'Military-Industrial Complex.' He mentions Stark's weapons ending up in the hands of terrorists."

"We checked," Coulson nodded. "It's true. Ten Rings cells in Afghanistan are armed with Stark Tech. Jericho missiles. Repulsor tech. It's all there."

"This confirms the diary's intel," Fury said. "But it also points to a leak. A massive one."

"Obadiah Stane," Natasha named the suspect. "The diary hinted at him before. 'Iron Monger.'"

"If Stane is selling weapons under the table," Fury said, "he's crossing a line. Even for a defense contractor."

"But we can't touch him," Fury warned. "Not directly. Stane is deeply embedded in the Military-Industrial Complex. And you know what happens when you mess with those people."

"JFK," Barton muttered. "The 'Mr. Happy' of presidents."

"Exactly," Fury nodded grimly. "President Kennedy tried to de-escalate. He tried to cut the budget. And look what happened. 'Brainstorming' session in Dallas."

"The Kennedy Curse," Coulson added. "His whole family. Dead. It was a warning."

"If we go after Stane," Fury said, "we need proof. Ironclad proof. Or we end up like Kennedy."

"But now," Fury looked at the diary again, "we have a wild card. Lucas."

"Lucas is scared," Natasha analyzed the text. "He's panicking. He thinks SHIELD is coming for him. He thinks I'm coming for him."

She smirked.

"He calls me a 'Beautiful Deadly Viper.' Says I'll 'bite' Stark and ruin him."

"Flattery gets him nowhere," Fury grunted. "But he's right about one thing. We are coming for him."

"But not to arrest him," Fury decided. "To recruit him."

"He has flight," Fury listed. "Tactile Telekinesis. Super Strength. And knowledge of the future. He's an asset we can't afford to lose."

"Coulson," Fury ordered. "You're the 'Novice Village Chief.' Go say hello."

"Cover?" Coulson asked.

"Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division," Fury said. "Use the full name. It usually confuses people long enough to get a foot in the door."

"And Natasha," Fury looked at the Black Widow. "You're the backup. If he runs... or if Stark tries to poach him... you go in."

"As Natalie Rushman?" she asked.

"No," Fury smiled. "As the Dream Goddess. Let's see if his fanboyism is stronger than his paranoia."

Stark Mansion.

Tony Stark was also reading the diary update.

"The Bald Egg Head... Novice Village Chief... Beautiful Deadly Viper."

"He thinks Natasha Romanoff is going to ruin me?" Tony scoffed. "Please. I'm immune to redheads. Mostly."

"Sir," Jarvis interrupted. "The analysis of the 'Military-Industrial Complex' reference is complete."

"And?"

"The correlation between Obadiah Stane's travel logs and the Ten Rings' activity is... statistically significant. 94% probability of collusion."

Tony closed his eyes.

"Obie," he whispered. "You really did it. You sold me out."

"And the 'Mr. Happy' reference," Jarvis added. "It refers to President John F. Kennedy. Assassinated in 1963. The implication is that challenging the war machine leads to death."

"Well," Tony opened his eyes, the Arc Reactor glowing brightly in the dim lab. "I'm not a politician. I'm Iron Man."

"If Stane wants a war," Tony said, looking at the Mark 3, "I'll give him one."

"But first," Tony tapped the diary. "I need to deal with Superman."

"He knows too much. And he's too powerful."

"Jarvis," Tony ordered. "Accelerate the Anti-Freak Armor project. And add a new module."

"Designation?"

"Project: Kryptonite."

"Sir, Kryptonite is a fictional mineral."

"I know," Tony grinned. "But every superman has a weakness. We just need to find Lucas's."

"Maybe it's not a rock," Tony mused. "Maybe it's a girl. Gwen Stacy?"

"Keep an eye on her, Jarvis. She might be the key."
