Stark Mansion. The Lab.
Tony Stark was connecting the dots faster than a Cray supercomputer.
"Lucas is a civilian," Tony mused, pacing around the holographic display. "Orphan. Average income. Decent looks—though nowhere near my level, obviously."
"If a secret organization like this 'Snake Shield Bureau' is targeting him, it's not for his money. It's for his power."
"Flight. Super strength. Bio-field. He's a living weapon."
"And if they want him," Tony realized, looking at his own armor, "they definitely want me."
"Jarvis, run a hypothetical scenario. If an organization has infiltrated the highest levels of intelligence—higher than the FBI and CIA—what is their endgame?"
"Control, Sir," Jarvis replied. "Or destabilization. If they can compromise 'Super' assets, they can tip the balance of global power."
"And this 'Snake Shield,'" Tony muttered. "It sounds like a mockery. A twisted reflection."
"We need to find them," Tony decided. "Before they find us."
SHIELD Headquarters.
The mood was lighter, but the undercurrent of tension remained.
"Snake Shield Bureau," Barton chuckled. "Sounds like a bad translation of a Kung Fu movie villain."
"I've heard of the 'Spear Bureau' (Shen Miao Ju) in the East," Barton noted. "They're legit. Scary efficient. But 'Snake Shield'?"
"It's a nickname," Natasha insisted. "Just like 'Bald Egg Head.' Lucas uses code words. We need to crack the code."
"Think about the imagery," Natasha said. "Snake. Shield. What organization uses a snake as a symbol?"
"The Serpent Society?" Coulson suggested. "They're small-time. Costumed criminals."
"The Hand?" Fury shook his head. "Ninjas. Not spies."
"What about the most famous snake of all?" Barton joked. "Hydra."
The room erupted in laughter.
"Hydra?" Coulson wiped a tear from his eye. "Clint, please. Hydra died in 1945. Cap buried them in the ice."
"Red Skull is gone," Fury agreed, chuckling. "Zola is dead. The whole organization was dismantled by the SSR. Suggesting Hydra is active today is like suggesting the British Empire is about to reconquer America."
They laughed. It was absurd. It was history.
But as the laughter died down, a silence settled over the room.
"But..." Coulson hesitated. "If it's not Hydra... then who fits the description? 'Dangerous.' 'Fight to the death.' 'Targeting Supers.'"
"Lucas is an observer from 'outside the Fourth Wall,'" Natasha reminded them. "He knows the plot. If he says this group is dangerous, they are the main villains of a future arc."
"Maybe a Neo-Hydra?" Hill suggested. "A copycat group?"
"Or maybe," Fury said, his smile fading completely, "we shouldn't be laughing."
"If Lucas calls it 'Snake Shield'... and we are 'Shield'..."
Fury stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the Triskelion courtyard. Hundreds of agents were moving below.
"What if the snake isn't outside?" Fury whispered. "What if the snake is wrapped around the shield?"
The room went cold.
"Hydra inside SHIELD," Natasha said the words they had all been avoiding.
"It's impossible," Coulson argued, though his voice lacked conviction. "We vet everyone. The psychological screenings. The background checks."
"Who writes the screenings, Phil?" Fury asked quietly. "Who approves the checks?"
"Alexander Pierce," Fury answered his own question.
"If Hydra didn't die," Fury said, turning back to his team. "If they just... changed uniforms. Then we are standing in the belly of the beast."
"Snake Shield Bureau," Fury repeated. "It's not a nickname. It's a diagnosis."
"We need to be sure," Fury ordered. "We need to test the waters. But we can't do it here. The walls have ears."
"We need an external asset," Fury looked at the diary again. "Someone who can see through walls. Someone who can fly."
"Lucas," Natasha said. "And Stark."
"It's time for that meeting," Fury said. "Tonight. Stark's mansion. And tell Stark to have the good scotch ready. We're going to need it."
Meanwhile, in Queens.
Lucas Chen sneezed again.
"Okay," he rubbed his nose. "Either I'm developing a pollen allergy, or the plot is moving way too fast."
He looked at his diary.
[Note to self: Be careful of SHIELD. If they are infiltrated by Hydra, they might try to recruit me for 'Project Insight' target practice.]
[Also, did I mention that Alexander Pierce is the head of Hydra? Yeah, the guy who runs the World Security Council. The guy who gives Fury his orders. Irony at its finest.]
He closed the book.
"I should probably go buy some milk," Lucas thought. "Before the secret police kick down my door."
System Alert (Stark's End):
New Entry Detected.
"Alexander Pierce is the head of Hydra."
Tony Stark stared at the name.
"Pierce," Tony whispered. "Fury's boss. The man who shook my hand at the peace summit last year."
"He's the head of the Snake."
"Jarvis," Tony said, his voice trembling with rage. "Prepare the Mark 3. And load the heavy ordnance."
"We're going hunting."
