Chapter 31 - Armor Returned, New Life Born, and Victory Under Heaven

Yue Heng Returns in Armor

The sound reached the Yue residence before anyone announced it.

Heavy, rhythmic hooves.

Not hurried. Not scattered.

Disciplined.

Yue Ning was practicing calligraphy when she paused, brush hovering mid-air.

"That's an army," she said softly.

Yue Chen set down his teacup.

"Only one person would bring such a formation home."

Before the servants could react, the main gates opened.

A squad of soldiers entered first, forming two neat lines. Then a man rode in slowly, sunlight glinting off dark armor marked by countless scratches.

Yue Heng.

His armor was worn, his cloak faded, but his posture was unbent.

Li Shi rushed forward first.

"Heng!"

Yue Heng dismounted immediately and knelt.

"Son greets Father and Mother. I return alive."

Yue Wen's usually calm hands trembled as he helped him up.

"You came back," Yue Wen said hoarsely. "That is enough."

Li Shi touched his face, then his arms, then the edge of his armor.

"Are you hurt? Did they treat you well? Did you eat properly?"

Yue Heng smiled faintly.

"I am whole. I ate when I could. I slept when allowed."

"That is not an answer," Li Shi scolded, tears forming.

Yue Heng lowered his head.

"I worried you."

Yue Ning ran forward and circled him like a curious bird.

"Third Brother smells like iron and smoke," she declared.

Yue Heng laughed and lifted her easily.

"That smell means I kept my promise and came home."

The Title Announcement

That evening, the family gathered in the main hall.

Yue Chen stood and raised his cup.

"By imperial decree, Yue Heng is confirmed as Fifth Rank Officer, Vanguard Battalion Commander, honored with the title Iron Banner."

A murmur of approval spread.

Yue Wen closed his eyes briefly.

"Our family has not wasted heaven's favor," he said.

Li Shi held her sleeve tightly, whispering,

"Promise me you will be careful next time."

Yue Heng nodded.

"I promise to return."

Yue Ning tugged his armor strap.

"You promised to watch me grow taller."

Yue Heng smiled.

"Then I must come back every year."

News of Birth

Before the wine cooled, hurried footsteps echoed through the hall.

A servant rushed in, breathless.

"Good news! Eldest Cousin's residence—Madam Shen Yao has gone into labor!"

Yue Ming stood so quickly his chair scraped the floor.

"Which midwife?"

"The imperial physician is already there."

Yue Ming bowed once.

"Forgive me."

Yue Ning waved wildly.

"Big Brother, don't forget to come back!"

Yue Ming paused and smiled at her.

"I will bring news."

Hours passed.

The lamps burned low.

Wang shi clasped prayer beads.

Then, at last, another servant ran in, nearly tripping.

"A son! A healthy boy! Mother and child are safe!"

Zhao Lan covered her mouth in relief.

Yue Wen exhaled slowly.

"The line continues."

When Yue Ming returned at dawn, his voice was hoarse, his smile uncontainable.

"He cried the moment he was born," Yue Ming said. "Loud enough to wake the street."

Yue Ning clapped.

"That means he will be brave."

Yue Ming looked at her seriously.

"I believe you."

Triumphal Return of the Crown Prince

Three days later, the capital shook.

Drums thundered from the eastern gate.

The streets overflowed with people.

"The crown prince has returned!"

"The war is over!"

Yue Heng stood beside Yue Wen, watching the road.

"He won," Yue Heng said quietly.

At the head of the army rode Crown Prince Xu Chen, only fifteen, yet steady as a seasoned general.

His armor bore the marks of battle.

Behind him stretched banners declaring conquest.

The neighboring lands were absorbed.

The Xu Kingdom had become the second largest kingdom under heaven.

The cheers were deafening.

Xu Chen raised one hand.

Silence fell.

His gaze swept the city.

Something tugged at his chest.

A faint pull.

Familiar.

He frowned slightly.

"…Strange."

A Missed Sensing

At the same moment, Yue Ning stood inside her courtyard, holding a silk ribbon.

Her fingers paused.

"He's back," she whispered.

Zhao Lan glanced at her.

"Who?"

Yue Ning smiled faintly.

"The wind feels heavier today."

Far away, Xu Chen looked toward the residential quarter, his eyes lingering for a heartbeat too long.

Then he turned away.

Not yet.

Palace Reception

The emperor descended the palace steps himself.

"My son," he said proudly, "you have secured the borders and expanded the realm."

Xu Chen knelt.

"I fulfilled my duty."

The emperor laughed.

"At fifteen, you speak like a veteran."

He raised his voice.

"From this day onward, the Xu Kingdom stands second only to the greatest empire. This glory belongs to the crown prince!"

The court erupted in cheers.

Xu Chen rose calmly, but his heart remained unsettled.

Quiet After Glory

That night, the Yue residence slept lightly.

Yue Heng removed his armor piece by piece.

Li Shi folded it carefully.

"Rest," she said softly. "You are home."

Yue Wen placed a hand on his son's shoulder.

"You have done enough for now."

Elsewhere, Yue Ming sat beside his sleeping newborn.

"He has your nose," Shen Yao whispered.

Yue Ming smiled.

"Then he must learn patience."

In her room, Yue Ning stared at the stars.

"Still early," she murmured. "We have time."

In the palace, Xu Chen stood alone by an open window.

"Too soon," he said quietly.

Above them all, the heavens watched.

And remained silent.
