Chapter 37 - When Memory Learns to Choose

No one moved because the second thread was moving. It floated in the air like a strand of silver silk, thin but impossibly clear visible even to those without cultivation. It did not flicker like the others. It did not tangle or pull.

It drifted...slowly.Qing Li suddenly took a step back, his eyes narrowing as he stared at a silver thread drifting higher in the air. Unlike the others, it wasn't connected to Lian, Chen, or anyone in the crowd. It simply floated there, moving slowly through the village square. "...That one isn't connected." he said quietly. Yan Luo followed its movement carefully, his expression gradually becoming serious. "I know." Qing Li frowned and folded his arms. "It's not reacting to anyone." "I know." Qing Li looked at him again. "Then what is it doing?" Yan Luo's gaze remained fixed on the drifting strand. His voice lowered. "Looking."

The villagers instinctively stepped backward. Nobody spoke too loudly anymore. Nobody laughed anymore either because unlike before, when the changes felt confusing and random, this felt intentional.Zhao Wei stared at the floating thread and unconsciously swallowed."It feels… different." he whispered. Shen Lian nodded slightly without taking her eyes off it. "It is." Zhao Wei looked at her. "How?" Shen Lian answered quietly. "The previous threads responded to memory." She paused for a moment before her voice became even softer. "This one is choosing."

Behind them, Lian suddenly laughed happily. "Chen, come here!" Everyone instinctively turned around again. Their eyes widened immediately. The boy called Chen was clearer now.He was no longer just a flickering outline. His legs had fully formed from the knees down. His feet pressed gently against the dusty ground, leaving behind actual footprints.

Qing Li stared at them for several seconds before speaking. "That's new." Yan Luo nodded once. "Yes." Chen looked down at himself curiously. He lifted one foot and placed it back down again. Dust shifted beneath him. His eyes widened slightly in fascination. "I can feel the ground." he said quietly. Lian smiled proudly. "Of course you can!" Chen looked at her, but confusion slowly replaced his smile. "But… I don't remember how it's supposed to feel." Lian blinked. "What do you mean?" Chen lowered his gaze toward his feet. "I know I've walked before." He paused. "But I don't remember learning how."

Yan Luo slowly stepped closer, careful not to alarm him. His voice remained calm and gentle. "Chen!" he said softly. The boy looked up immediately. "Yes?" Yan Luo studied him for a moment."What else do you remember?" Chen thought quietly before answering. "Playing with Lian." Yan Luo nodded. "And?" "Running." "And before that?" Chen's expression slowly faltered. He frowned slightly, as though searching through an empty room. "I don't know."

Qing Li sighed quietly under his breath. "Of course you don't." Lian turned toward him with an angry expression. "Stop talking like that!" Qing Li raised both hands defensively. "I'm just stating facts!" Lian's eyes became red again. "He's real!" Qing Li exhaled. "Based on what?!" Lian immediately answered without hesitation. "Because I remember him!"

The moment Lian said it...The thread around Chen brightened.Just slightly But enough.

Xu Yang's eyes narrowed.Every affirmation strengthened the structure.Every denial made it unstable...but not weaker.Xu Yang sat quietly near the edge of the square. He did not interfere but he felt everything. The threads...The pull. And something else that faint presence again.Suddenly... The second thread shifted direction. It dipped lower and it got closer to the crowd..People flinched as it passed near them. One man shivered." Cold." he muttered. A woman shook her head. "I don't feel anything."

Another villager whispered," It feels like someone calling me." Qing Li stepped forward sharply. "Everyone stay still!" "No sudden movements!" He added "Don't touch it!"Zhao Wei asked quietly,."Will it hurt us?"

Yan Luo did not answer immediately then he said,"I don't know." It Chooses thread slowed then it moved sraight toward an elderly woman standing at the edge of the square. She had been silent until now and watching everything with distant eyes. Her hands trembled slightly as the thread approached.

Qing Li reacted instantly."Move her away!"

But it was too late thread touched her.And sank into her chest.

The woman froze. Her eyes widened." No!" she whispered. Zhao Wei stepped forward. "Are you alright? "She didn't respond. Her lips trembled."That's not right!" she murmured. Shen Lian's expression darkened. "It's starting." The woman slowly lifted her head. " I remember something." she said.Qing Li groaned. "Here we go again."Yan Luo spoke gently. "What do you remember?"The woman's voice shook. " I had a son."Zhao Wei blinked. " Had?"She shook her head slowly. " No."Her voice grew firmer. "I have a son."Yan Luo's gaze sharpened. "What is his name?" The woman hesitated. " I don't know."Qing Li sighed. "Of course. You don't know.""But I remember him." she insisted. "How?" Qing li asked."You don't even know his name!" She looked at him, eyes filled with something deeper than confusion. "Because I miss him."That silenced him.

Yan Luo stepped back slightly."Do you see the difference?" he murmured. Shen Lian nodded.."Yes."Zhao Wei frowned. "What difference?" Yan Luo gestured toward Lian and Chen. "That one..." Then toward the elderly woman."And this one are not the same."Chen laughed softly as Lian pulled him toward the stool. "Sit here!" "Okay…"

He sat. The stool creaked and across the square elderly woman stood alone. Her thread was darker but uidid not branch. It sank inward.Behind her something moved.

Another shadow began forming nearby. Taller than Chen and far less stable. It stood near the edge of the square, its body incomplete and constantly shifting as if pieces of it were being added one by one. Qing Li was the first to notice. His expression immediately changed. "Yan Luo." Yan Luo followed his gaze, and for the first time in several minutes, his calm expression visibly shifted. "...That's not forming the same way." Nearby, Xu Yang slowly stood up. The difference was obvious even to him. Chen's thread felt alive. It felt warm. Growing naturally with every interaction but this new one felt hollow.

An elderly woman stood a few steps away, her eyes fixed on the shadow. She whispered softly, almost to herself, "He should be here." Zhao Wei carefully approached her. "Who should be here?" he asked. She didn't look at him. "He always comes home at this hour." Zhao Wei frowned slightly. "From where?" The woman stared ahead blankly. "I don't know."Shen Lian slowly exhaled and folded her arms. "This is no longer memory reconstruction." Qing Li looked at her. "Then what is it?" Yan Luo answered before she could. "...Creation." Xu Yang felt that pressure again and closer than before.

It brushed against the second thread gently, almost invisibly. It was guiding it.Xu Yang's tail immediately stilled behind him. His eyes narrowed. This was not the anchor. Whatever was doing this had a purpose.Suddenly, the elderly woman smiled."He's here."Everyone immediately turned toward her. Behind her, the shadow solidified slightly. A tall figure now stood there. It still had no face or distinct features, only the outline of a person. But then something changed. Slowly, its head turned directly toward Xu Yang. The entire square seemed to freeze. Xu Yang stared back without moving. And for the first time, it reacted to him. As if it could see him. As if it knew he was the only person present who truly understood what it was.

The figure moved again.Qing li's grip instantly tightened around his sword. "Did you see that?" he asked quietly. Yan Luo didn't answer immediately because he wasn't watching the figure at all. He was watching the elderly woman instead. After a moment, he spoke in a low voice. "Don't move."Qing Li frowned in confusion. "To whom?" Yan Luo finally shifted his gaze toward the crowd. "To everyone." he replied.

The elderly woman slowly took a trembling step forward. Her eyes shone with something fragile, "You came back!" she whispered softly. Her voice carried years of longing and years of waiting. Zhao Wei carefully stepped beside her. "Madam… are you certain?" he asked gently."Yes." she answered. "He's my son."Zhao Wei hesitated for a moment. "But you said you didn't remember his name."

Her expression didn't change at all. "I don't need a name to recognize him."Behind her, the figure shifted again. Its outline became clearer and it leaned slightly forward, almost as if it was responding directly to her emotions.Qing Li frowned deeply. "I don't like this."Yan Luo nodded once. "This one is progressing too fast."

Across the square, Lian tugged on Chen's sleeve. "Come on, ignore them," she said. "They're just being weird."Chen looked uncertain. His gaze slowly drifted toward the taller figure standing behind the elderly woman. "Why are they afraid?" he asked quietly.Lian shrugged. "They're always afraid of things they don't understand."Chen stayed silent for a few moments before speaking again. He continued staring at the growing shadow beside the woman, his expression becoming slightly uneasy."That feels wrong."

Lian blinked. "What does?"Chen hesitated before answering."The other one."

Xu Yang noticed it immediately. Chen could feel it too. The difference between them was becoming clearer with every passing moment. One existence had been born from warmth, memories, and genuine connection. The other had been born from absence itself. Qing Li slowly turned toward Yan Luo, his expression growing serious. "You see it too, right?" he asked quietly. Yan Luo nodded once without looking away. "Yes." Qing Li frowned. "That thing isn't just forming." Yan Luo's voice remained calm but heavy. "It's being filled."

Shen Lian stepped forward and stopped in front of the elderly woman. "Madam!" she said calmly. The woman turned toward her immediately. "You said this is your son." "Yes!" she replied without hesitation. Shen Lian's eyes sharpened slightly. "Then answer me this… when was he born?" The woman froze instantly. For the first time since all of this had begun, her certainty wavered. "He…" she started softly before stopping altogether. "I…" Her breathing gradually became uneven. She opened her mouth several times, trying to answer, but no words came out. Finally, she whispered, "I don't remember."

The shadow behind her flickered violently. Its outline distorted unnaturally, stretching taller for a brief moment before snapping back into place. Qing Li stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. "There it is." Yan Luo nodded once. "That's the flaw." His gaze remained fixed on the figure. "Unlike Chen… this one has no foundation."

The elderly woman suddenly clutched her chest tightly. "No," she whispered. "He exists." Tears slowly welled up in her eyes. "You don't need a full memory." Her voice trembled as she continued. "I feel him." More tears escaped down her face. "I've always felt like something was missing." Zhao Wei's expression softened immediately. He understood that feeling all too well. "Loneliness." he said gently. The woman slowly nodded. "Yes."

Shen Lian folded her arms and quietly said, "The thread didn't come from memory." Qing Li immediately looked at her. "Then where?" Shen Lian met his gaze directly before answering. "From longing." Silence fell over the square again. Then Yan Luo quietly added, "And regret."Xu Yang moved slightly where he stood. The threads reacted instantly. Chen's thread calmed almost immediately, becoming smoother and more stable. But the second thread shuddered violently. As if it was resisting him. As if his presence itself was a threat. Behind the elderly woman, the shadow suddenly jerked unnaturally.Qing Li noticed it at once. "It doesn't like him."Yan Luo nodded slowly.

"No." "It doesn't."

The woman reached out. "Come here!" she said gently. The shadow responded. It stepped forward. One step then another. Each step made it clearer.More solid and More wrong because its movement was too smooth not like a child learning to exist.Like something already aware. The villagers instinctively began backing away, fear spreading faster than before. Their earlier confusion was gone now, replaced entirely by unease. "This isn't right…" one man whispered nervously. Another woman clutched her child's shoulder. "That thing feels…" She shivered before finishing. "cold." Zhao Wei stepped in front of them, raising his hands slightly. "Everyone, stay calm!" he said firmly. "No sudden movements!" Beside him, Qing Li muttered under his breath, "You really think calm is still an option?"

A short distance away, Chen stared quietly at the taller shadow. His expression slowly became uncertain. "...It's not like me." he said softly. Lian looked at him. "What do you mean?" Chen shook his head slightly. "I don't know." His eyes remained fixed on the figure. "But it feels empty."The figure behind the elderly woman suddenly stopped moving. Then, slowly, it raised its hand.it raised toward the entire square. Toward everyone standing there. Xu Yang's eyes narrowed. That wasn't instinct anymore.

Xu Yang felt it clearly now. That presence wasn't surrounding the second thread anymore. It was inside it. Guiding it. Not controlling it completely, but shaping every movement carefully. Xu Yang's fur slowly bristled. This was something else entirely.

"This isn't just the system." Yan Luo suddenly said.Qing Li immediately looked at him. "Then what is it?"Yan Luo's voice lowered. "Something is using it."Nearby, the elderly woman smiled softly at the figure. "You've grown." she said quietly. She slowly stepped closer to it. "You're taller now." Her voice trembled with emotion. "I missed you."

Then suddenly, every thread in the air tightened at once. All of them. Even Chen's. Xu Yang froze immediately. This was new. Until now, every thread had acted independently according to its source, but this time the entire system was reacting together. For a brief moment, the entire village square flickered strangely, as if two separate realities were trying to occupy the same space. In one version, the elderly woman stood completely alone. In the other, she stood beside her grown son. The images overlapped repeatedly before snapping back into place.Qing Li cursed under his breath. "That's not normal!"Yan Luo answered, his voice sharp and serious. "Nothing about this is normal anymore."Xu Yang slowly stepped forward again. But this time he wasn't simply observing. He pushed back.

Chen's form stabilized further, becoming clearer and more solid than before. But the second figure reacted differently. Its body suddenly distorted, twisting unnaturally for several seconds as if something inside it was resisting then it stopped. Its head snapped directly toward Xu Yang.the figure moved with clear intention. It took one step toward Xu Yang, then another. Every movement was slow, deliberate, and unsettlingly calm.

Qing Li reacted instantly. He stepped in front of Xu Yang and positioned himself between them. "Hey… stay back!" he warned sharply.

But the figure didn't even acknowledge him.

It didn't stop and didn't hesitate. It simply kept staring at Xu Yang, as if Qing Li wasn't there at all. As if nobody else in the square existed except him.Yan Luo's eyes widened slightly as realization settled over him. He watched the scene for several seconds before speaking quietly."It's not reacting to us."

Shen Lian stood beside him and slowly nodded. Her expression grew more serious as she watched the figure continue focusing on Xu Yang."It's reacting to him."

The figure stopped just a few steps away. Then a voice came from it. Low ,Distorted and Unfamiliar." You…" A pause. As if forming language for the first time. " are wrong."The threads trembled. Xu Yang's pupils narrowed because he understood. That wasn't confusion. That wasn't instinct. That was judgment. And for the first time Something born from the threads…Had rejected him.

The word still lingered ".wrong."But now It was no longer just a sound. It was a fracture.

The shadow behind the elderly woman surged again. Stronger and Wider. The ground beneath it split into thin, dark lines that crawled outward like cracks in glass. A wooden cart overturned. A child screamed. "Something's wrong!"Qing Li stepped forward instantly. "Everyone, back!"Yan Luo's voice followed, sharp and controlled. "Do not get close to it!"But the pressure It didn't let them move easily. It pressed down on everyone equally.

The elderly woman didn't step back. Her hands trembled as she reached forward again. "My son…" she whispered.

"Come here… don't disappear again…"The shadow responded. It leaned toward her

But something in its movement twisted Not warmth and Not recognition but Something hollow. The air flickered. Two realities overlapped violently in one, she stood alone. In the other, she stood beside something tall and unfinished. The clash created a sharp ringing sound. Zhao Wei staggered. "I can't tell which is real !" Qing Li grabbed him. "Stay focused!" But even he was struggling now. " Yan Luo," he muttered, "This isn't stabilizing."

"I know."

Across the square Chen's form flickered.

For the first time since appearing. " Lian…" he said weakly. Lian's grip tightened. "No! Don't do that!" "You're fine..you're staying!"

But her voice trembled. Because she could see it He was fading.Yan Luo's expression darkened. "It's taking from him." Qing Li turned sharply. "What?" "The second thread it's consuming stability from other threads." " including Chen."Qing Li swore under his breath. "So if that thing fully forms " "he disappears." Yan Luo finished.

Shen Lian stepped forward, talisman raised, her expression steady but sharp with urgency. "We have to cut it off now." The elderly woman immediately stepped in front of the shadow, panic breaking through her voice as she pleaded, "No! You'll kill him!" Shen Lian didn't hesitate at all. "If we don't act.." she began, but the woman suddenly screamed over her, "He's already dead!"

The words rang out across the square like a crack in the air itself. The moment they landed, the shadow reacted. A surge of pressure erupted outward, heavy and suffocating. The ground fractured in sharp lines beneath everyone's feet, and a nearby wall split with a loud, collapsing snap. Dust and debris scattered while villagers were forced down, some dropping to their knees, others stumbling backward in panic as the weight pressed into them from all directions.

Qing Li gritted his teeth, struggling to stay upright. "We're out of time!" he shouted. Yan Luo, however, didn't respond. His attention had already shifted completely away from the chaos and toward Xu Yang. Not toward the shadow anymore but toward the cat standing quietly at the center of it all.In the middle of chaos A small black cat stepped forward. Calm and Unhurried.Almost invisible among the panic but Yan Luo saw him. Qing Li saw him too. And their expressions changed instantly." No." Qing Li muttered. Yan Luo's voice dropped." Don't."Because they understood If Xu Yang acted now Everything would change.

Xu Yang stopped at the center of the square.

The threads were no longer subtle. They filled the space. Twisting, Clashing or Breaking.

And that presence Still there. Still pushing the second creation forward.Xu Yang's gaze lifted slightly. Cold and Certain. He had waited long enough. The moment it happened It silenced everything. Not the world But the chaos within it. The threads froze. Mid-motion.Like something had taken control of their flow. From the small black form Unraveling it and Rewriting it. Villagers gasped."The cat !" "What's happening ?!

The light faded. And in its place A man stood.

Tall and Still. Wrapped in dark robes that seemed to absorb the surrounding light.

Xu Yang in human form . Golden eyes steady and unreadable. The square fell silent. Utterly.

Zhao Wei stared in disbelief. "That… that was the cat…"Someone whispered, "It turned into a person…" Another stepped back in fear. "Is it a demon ?"

Qing Li exhaled sharply. " Damn it."Yan Luo's expression remained calm But his voice wasn't. " Why now?" Qing Li glanced at him. "You think this won't spread?"Yan Luo didn't answer.Because they both knew It would.

Xu Yang raised his hand slightly. The threads responded instantly. All of them. They turned toward him Like they had been waiting.

The shadow reacted violently. Its form twisted, expanding outward. Refusing. Rejecting. " wrong…" it echoed again. But weaker and Unstable.Xu Yang's voice was quiet."You were never meant to exist like this."The threads tightened.

The air cracked. The shadow surged one last time and trying to stabilize ,trying to overwrite or trying to become real.Xu Yang closed his fingers slightly. And the threads obeyed. They wrapped around the shadow. Not destroying but containing. They were forcing it back.

The shadow shattered. Not into nothing But into fragments of dim, fading light. Then It collapsed into a single thread. Dormant. Floating. Silent. The pressure vanished. The cracks in the ground sealed. The air returned.

Chen stabilized completely. He didn't flicker again. Lian hugged him tightly. " You're still here." she whispered.Chen nodded slowly. " He helped."

No one spoke. They were all staring At Xu Yang. Not the cat. Not anymore. But the man standing where the cat had been.Zhao Wei stepped back. " What are you?"A villager whispered, "He controlled everything…" Another: "The threads listened to him…"Qing Li stepped closer to Yan Luo. "This is bad." Yan Luo nodded. "Yes." Qing li said. "They've seen him." "And they won't forget."She moved through the crowd. Calm ,Steady.

And Unafraid. Her gaze never left Xu Yang.

She stopped in front of him Closer than anyone else dared. "You're not a spirit beast," she said. "Not just that."No response. "You're not human either."Her gaze didn't soften. It sharpened. "Then what are you?"

The question didn't shake the air But it shifted something deeper. The threads stirred faintly. As if listening and waiting.

Xu Yang's expression didn't change.

But he didn't look away. She Steps Closer. "Answer me."Her voice was calm. But carried weight. Not authority Not force But certainty.

"You controlled the threads." A pause.

"You stopped the collapse." Another step closer. "You interfered with something even we don't fully understand."

Her eyes locked onto his. Clear and Piercing.

Demanding truth. "How?" Silence.

The villagers held their breath. Even Qing Li stopped speaking. Yan Luo didn't interrupt.

Because this mattered. Shen Lian didn't stop. "If this is tied to the memory threads "

"Then you are tied to them too." Her voice lowered slightly. "But not like the others."

Another step. Now There was no distance left. "Who are you… exactly?"A pause."And why "Her gaze flickered briefly toward the place where the shadow had collapsed. " can you control it?"

Everything stilled again. Not forced this time.

But waiting. For his answer , For his truth and

For whatever came next. Xu Yang stood there Unmoving. Golden eyes unreadable. The threads trembled faintly around him .As if even they were listening. And for the first time

There was no easy way to remain silent.
