Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: A Predator’s Instinct

Raina didn't believe in coincidence.

She believed in disturbances.

The cemetery gates closed behind her with a low metallic groan.

She walked toward her car, movements smooth, unhurried, composed.

But beneath that calm…

Something shifted.

Not sound.

Not motion.

Instinct.

That quiet, familiar sensation crept along her spine.

Cold.

Precise.

Ancient.

Eyes.

Raina didn't turn.

Didn't search.

Didn't betray awareness.

Her heels clicked softly against stone as she reached the tinted car door.

Then—

She paused.

Barely noticeable.

Her gaze lifted to the glass.

Her reflection stared back at her.

And beyond it—

A flicker.

A subtle disturbance between headstones.

Gone instantly.

Raina's lips curved.

Slow.

Knowing.

Dangerously calm.

"…There you are."

Far behind her, concealed by shadows and skeletal trees, the watcher froze.

Because she hadn't looked back.

Hadn't scanned.

Hadn't reacted like prey.

Yet somehow…

She knew.

Albert opened the door.

Raina slid inside like liquid shadow.

"You sensed it," Albert said quietly.

"Yes."

"Should I deploy security?"

Raina leaned back, eyes cold, voice colder.

"No."

Albert glanced at her.

"Let them watch."

Her gaze darkened.

Calculating.

Patient.

Predatory.

"Hunters always reveal themselves eventually."

The engine purred.

The car vanished into the night.

Leaving the watcher standing alone…

With a very unfamiliar feeling.

Unease.Across the City

Chloe's anxiety sharpened with every passing streetlight.

Calls unanswered.

Messages ignored.

Silence expanding like a crack through her chest.

"This isn't like you…"

Her fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

"You don't vanish."

The neighborhood emerged slowly.

Ordinary.

Painfully ordinary.

Faded walls.

Low fences.

Quiet homes wrapped in evening stillness.

The kind of place no one ever looked twice at.

Perfect for someone like Loren Vex.

Chloe parked abruptly.

Her pulse already racing.

The house stood exactly as it always had.

Small.

Unremarkable.

Lights off.

But something about it felt…

Wrong.

She stepped out quickly.

Heels striking pavement.

Sharp.

Impatient.

Uneasy.

She knocked.

Once.

Twice.

Harder.

"Vex!"

Nothing.

Her jaw tightened.

She moved to the window.

Peered inside.

Darkness.

Stillness.

No movement.

She circled the house.

Knocked again.

Checked another window.

Nothing.

Fear began crawling into her stomach now.

Slow.

Heavy.

Unwelcome.

"This isn't funny…"

She knocked harder.

Pounded this time.

Desperation bleeding through irritation.

"Vex, open the door!"

Silence.

Then—

A voice behind her.

Calm.

Curious.

Unsettlingly casual.

"You won't get an answer."

Chloe spun around violently.

Heart slamming against her ribs.

An elderly woman stood near the neighboring fence, arms folded, eyes observant.

Chloe forced composure.

"…Excuse me?"

The woman tilted her head slightly.

"That man?"

She nodded toward the house.

"Haven't seen him."

Chloe's stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?"

The woman shrugged.

"Means exactly that."

A pause.

Then—

Lower.

More deliberate.

"He's been missing."

Chloe's breath hitched.

"…Missing?"

"Few days now."

The woman studied Chloe carefully.

"No lights. No car. No movement."

A beat of silence.

Then the final blow—

Delivered with chilling indifference.

"Strange thing is…"

Chloe's pulse thundered.

"…men like him don't just disappear."

The air shifted.

The world seemed to tilt slightly beneath Chloe's feet.

Because Loren Vex didn't go missing.

Men like Loren Vex were the reason others went missing.

And suddenly—

For the first time—

Fear wasn't aimed outward.

It turned inward.

Toward something far worse.

Someone else was moving pieces now.
