Chapter 1 - THE SUM-ZERO HERO

Imagine this? You were walking down a street and randomly found a rare diamond ring by pure luck, you would say 'oh I guess it's my lucky day' and then walked away, right? But that scenario happens to me, I will try my best to not to pick it up.

Because if I picked up the ring, something equally as unlucky like a horse trampling me would happen or giant fish raining down on me would've happened.

Because of my ability, Luck, I'm only lucky at the start of a scenario, but at the end of it, I have debt to pay back and the universe is a stingy accountant who will always remember to make something equally as unlucky happens to me.

But if I don't pick it up, my ability will force me into picking it up the ring or make someone else pick it up and give to me and then something equally as unlucky like a pebble falling out of the sky, barely hitting a carriage and it runs me over would still happened.

In my world, this is what we call a passive ability. My name is Felix Arundel, and this is story about the Sum-Zero Hero.

I was lucky to be born at all. Because of my mother's rare mana illness, I had a 0.001 percent chance of being born but because I had my ability before I was even born; I beaten the odds and I was born.

My parents were ecstatic that they finally gotten a child after 5 miscarriages. Because of that, they given me the first name, Felix, that literally means lucky in my world.

The moment I was born; I saw it, a bright light hovering over my head. The lights hurts so badly, it brings me to tears.

"Congratulations mother, it's a beautiful babybo....." Before he could finished, the universe came to collect the debt i owns it. While the doctor was hand me to my mother, I accidentally fell out of the doctor's hand and hit my head.

Immediately, the doctor took me into another room where the head doctor, Carmen, one of my mother's friends was in to see if I was ok.

"Linda, Brandon, your baby have a small concussion on his right side of his cranium, but he will be fine." Carmen muttered.

My father sighed, relief. "Thank God he's ok. Those damn doctors, I wouldn't even know what would we do if we lost my boy the moment he was born."

"Me too. Because of my illness, he was lucky to even born." My mother chimed in, staring at the ceiling of the room.

"Did you just say lucky?" Carmen chuckled, "While I was checking up on your son, I accidentally saw the name of his ability..... oh nevermind." She stop talking instantly.

In our world, not everyone was born with an ability, and if they do, they will need a large amount mana to use the ability to the highest degree possible.

She got up and grabbed Carmen, "Did you just say you saw our son's ability? Tell me now Carmen!" My mother shouted.

"Yes I did, but it was an acciden....." My mother covered up the doctor's mouth, stopping her from rambling away.

"I don't care if you saw it by accident, we are good friends Carmen it's ok if you saw it first. Now tell me the name of my baby boy ability!"

After she released Carmen, she took a seat in her chair. "Ok then if you want to know, I will tell you. His ability name is, Luck."

"But, he.... doesn't possess any mana." The doctor mumbled under her breath.

Their smiles faded in an instant.

My father walked up to her, trying to hear what she just said.

"Could you repeat that, Carmen? I couldn't hear you clearly. " My father uttered cuffing his right ear.

She coughed,"Your son doesn't possess a single of mana in him!" She spoke loudly so that my parents could hear.

They were baffled because in our world, it all depends on how many percentage of mana you possess, and their only child was born with an ability but not one drop of mana.

"H-how is that be possible? How can someone born with an ability but not also with mana?" My mother asked confusedly.

Her face hinted a confused expression, "I don't know either, I'm actually confused myself as the both of you. I've never saw some born with an ability and without a mana reserve. It's always the other way around."

After that conversation, my parents exited the hospital still confused about my situation.

"Nevermind that honey, even if he doesn't have any mana he's still our child. Nothing can never change that." My father uttered, patting on my head.

"I know, and we will always love him. Anyway, let's go and show our family Felix."

They took me to my grandparents, my aunts, and my uncle.

In my earliest stages of youth, I used to get myself into a lot of trouble because of my ability. Like the time my parents found out that I'm not just lucky but also unlucky the hard way after I found a rare diamond at the entrance of our house.

"Honey, come quickly, Felix found a rare diamond!" My mother shouted, "And not just any rare diamond, he found a mana diamond!"

Mana diamonds are precious stones that the top of the top adventurers and rich people buy and use to restore their mana quickly after they drained it.

"Did you say mana diamond?! Are you sure?" My father uttered, running towards us from the backyard.

But because of my ability, the rightful owner of the mana diamond, Lord Phillip, the governor of our town, was randomly passing by and saw it in my hand.

"You little thief!" He shouted, "You stole my mana diamond!" His voice echoed across the town.

My mother handed back the diamond and explained to lord Phillip that I didn't stole it and that I found it.

Everyone in our town, except my parents and Charlotte, stood clear of me. Every time they saw me, it's like they are looking at a hazard sign.

If you're wondering who is "Charlotte"? She is my best friend, we played a lot together when we little kids.

Each game we played I luckily won everyone of them, but I had the most damage at the end of the day.

Charlotte never got upset or called me a cheater when I always win because she was always laughing at me when something randomly bad happens to me.

"How can you be so lucky and unlucky at the same time, Koun?" Charlotte asked me after we were finished playing each day.

Koun is the nickname she gave me, it literally also means luck in our world.

We thought that we were going to be best friends until we grow old and die, but nothing ever goes as planned because of my ability.

When we were both seven, we secretly went into the forest close to our houses; looking for any thing that looks pretty or shiny.

"Charlotte, let's go now.. I'm getting the same feelings what I always get when I'm about to get lucky." I muttered, pulling onto Charlotte's arm.

"Koun, we can't leave yet, we haven't find anything..." Before she could utter another word, we saw it, ten golden coins on the ground infront of us.

Suddenly, after seeing them, I turned around and started walking away from the coins.

"Oh no no, no, I'm not going anywhere near that. If I pick it up something might happen to me like a tree branch hitting me across the head or a something else." I muttered.

"Koun, come on, even if anything is going to happens to you, I will protect you." She chuckled, showing off her muscles.

Because I didn't want anything bad happens to me, I continued to walk away.

"Ok, if you don't want to pick it up, I will do it then." Charlotte bended over, picking up the coins off the ground.

"See, nothing bad is going to happen to you, because I picked it up." She walked towards me holding the coin. Unknowing to me, that my ability was the one controlling her actions.

The moment the coins touched my palm, the feeling I get when something bad is about to happen skyrocketed. I heard a cracking sound coming from above us and when I looked up; I saw a tree branch falling towards the ground.

"Charlotte get out of the way!" I shouted, shoving her away. But the tree branch wasn't aiming at me, it fell on to a stone made from dust; breaking it up into pieces then a gush of wind blew it onto my face.

I spat, "Eww, I got dirt in my mouth! Charlotte let's go, we going home now." I muttered.

When I turned around I saw it; Charlotte right arm was broken, but she just sat there, she didn't cry or whine about it. She had a big grin on her face.

"Charlotte! Are you okay?! Your hand looks broken!" I cried, fell down to my knees.

She laughed out loud, "Koun, I'm ok. Don't worry about me, I will be fine, I have an healing ability so I can heal back this minor injury in no time."

"No, it's not ok. If it wasn't for this stupid ability of mines, you wouldn't have been hurt. I hate this ability!" I screamed on the top of my lungs.

While we were heading back, Charlotte told me that I should keep the broken arm a secret from her parents but each day that I saw Charlotte, the more the guilt ate up inside of me.

"What did you just say you did?" Charlotte father asked, staring at me, after I told him about Charlotte's broken arm.

"I'm sorry, but I never mean to break your daughter's arm!" I uttered, bowing my head.

Charlotte father was a tall, muscular, strict man, and a castle guard for the kingdom of Eldoria. Because of his job, he's only at his house for once or twice a week, and when he's home, he gets a lot of complaints about me and his daughter.

He hated me because he in his mind, I'm always getting his daughter in trouble. But because of his wife, Charlotte's mother he never showed me the hatred he harbor for me until now.

"I knew my daughter shouldn't have being friends with you. Get out of my presence. You will never see my daughter again." He muttered, pointing at the exit.

After that, to make sure that his daughter never saw me again, the very next day, they moved out of our town to somewhere i didn't know.

When I found out that Charlotte moved out of the town by my parents, I fell to my knees and started crying.

"Sweetie, I know you're hurt after losing your only friend, but don't you worry, one day the both of you will see each other again." My mother muttered hugging me on the ground.

"But in the meantime, daddy and mommy will be playing with you everyday." My father chimed in.

"You will?" I asked, my eyes filled with tears, nose was runny.

"Yes, we will, Felix."

My dad took me up from the ground, placed me on his back and ran around with me outside until nightfall.

Everyday after Charlotte moved away, I sat infront of her former house; reminiscing about the time we used play right here and time when my ability used to get us in trouble.

Seasons came and went; days, months, and, years flew by in an instant. Now, I've grown up by eight years.
